YANA, Karnataka India
Published on Nov 21, 2014
Yana is a village located in forests of the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India which is known for the unusual rock formations (Karst) or (Asteroid). It is located in the Sahyadri mountain range of the Western Ghats, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Karwar port, 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Sirsi, and 31 kilometres (19 mi) from Kumta. The two unique rock outcrops near the village are a tourist attraction and easily approachable by a small trek through 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi) of thick forests from the nearest road head.
Yana is famous for these two massive rock outcrops known as the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara (Shikhara means hill). The huge rocks are composed of solid black, crystalline Karst limestone. Bhairaveshwara Shikhara is 120 metres (390 ft) in height, while the Mohini Shikhara, which is smaller, is 90 metres (300 ft) in height. Yana is also well known as a pilgrimage centre because of the cave temple below the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara where a Swayambhu (self manifested, or that which is created by its own accord) linga has been formed. Water drips from the roof over the linga, adding to the sanctity of the place.

Yana Rocks - Karnataka - Unknown places in India
Yana Rocks is one of the lesser known natural wonders in India. Gigantic karst rock formations, beautiful scenery, hiking trail and mysterious caves compose Yana Rocks.
.
Yana Rocks is in Yana village in Uttar Kannada and is approximately 30 KMs from Kumta-Sirsi highway. Search “Yana Parking lot” on google maps which will lead you to exact location. The road to this place goes through dense forest, it is one-lane-road and almost no vehicle in vicinity, all these factors make this drive scenic and adventurous. while marching the hill, the road condition is very bad (for approx. 5 KMs) and has many steep turns till you reach the parking area. So, be careful while driving, especially in rainy season. Ample parking space is available, they charge Rs.20 for four wheelers, no entry fee.
.
After walking for around 500 meters from parking area, you witness two rock monoliths rising sharply above the surrounding forest, Bhairaveshwara Shikhara (390 ft high) and Mohini Shikhara (300 ft high). Shiva Temple under the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara adds to the serenity of this place. There is an entry point to the cave formation from this temple. These caves make you realize what nature can produce is beyond imagination of human mind. From Bhairaveshwara Shikhara there are around 300 steps which connect to Mohini shikhara.
.
I visited this place while I was on the way to Gokarna(three hours from Yana), there are many tourist spots around, so one can plan a short trip to visit this offbeat location which is surely going to leave you mesmerized.

The Yana Experience
A trip to the amazing Yana rocks in Karnataka ... shooting out mysteriously from a rainforest. A temple of Shiva...
The locals say those who have money go to Gokarna, those who have guts go to Yana
Yana Cave, Karnataka, India
Lord Shiva granted Bhasmasura the power of reducing anybody to ashes -- on whose head he could lay his hand. Armed with this blessing, Bhasmasura became uncontrollable. He dreamt of eloping with Shiva's beautiful wife, Uma, and tried to burn down Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva then came down to earth and hid himself in a cave at Yana. In order to save Shiva-Parvati from the evil design of the demon, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a young, beautiful female dancer, Mohini, and challenged Bhasmasura to compete with her in a dance performance. During this performance, Mohini made the demon put his hand on his own head and reduce himself to ashes. Even today a white ash-like powder is scattered all around Yana, and the faithful believe that it is the remains of Bhasmasura.

Yana is a small hill station near Kumta in Uttar Kannada District. It is popular because of the two black crystalline limestone formations named as Bhairaveshwara peak and Mohini peak. Located in the picturesque green background of the Sahyadri Mountains, these peaks are a feast to the eyes of any nature lover.
Yana Hill Station at Hubli
An Overview of the Region
Yana is also a well known pilgrimage spot during Shivaratri for car festival celebration of lord Bhairaveshwara. The rock hillocks are surrounded by thick forests and water streams; trekking in this part of the Western Ghats is a dream of every adventure lover. The adventure hill station is located at a distance of 25 km from Kumta and 62 km from Karwar.
How reach :The nearest town to find accommodation is Kumta, which is 25 km away; staying at Sirsi that is 37 km away is a wise choice as the shortest way to reach Yana is the newly laid road from Sirsi to Yana. You may also choose to take the Janmane ghat or the Devimane Ghat connecting the Sirsi – Kumta road. On the foot of the Devimane Ghat, a mud path ‑ which is about 15 km ‑ takes you to the Yana Village.
Rock formations and wild beehives of Yana in Karnataka
Yana is a pilgrim centre located amongst the evergreen forest of the Sahyadri mountains. It is 25 km for Kumta, a small coastal town and 40 km for Sirsi, a commercial centre. One has to walk several miles on the partially paved road from the highway. The area is known for its majestic mountains, a variety of rock formations, trickling waterfalls and the holy temple.
The tallest peak, Bhariraveswara Shikhara stands 120 meters high, whereas the Mohini Shikhara is ninety meters from its base. The mighty rocks have been roughened by the vagaries of burning Sun, uncontrolled winds and torrential rains. They are solid composition of black, crystalline limestone.
Wild bees have taken the liberty to construct their hives on these rock-shelters.
A large cave, a, measuring about three meters at the entrance, has a Shivalinga. Water drips from the projecting rocks over the linga, and devotees call it Gangodbhava. The cave also has a bronze icon of Chandika, an incarnation of Mother Goddess Durga. Trickled from the rocks form a small river, 'Chandihole' which joins the Aghanashini river at Uppinapattana.
