Yanagawa is a perfect day trip from Fukuoka in Kyushu. We went there in the afternoon, after visiting Dazaifu in the morning. We got the Dazaifu and Yanagawa Sightseeing Ticket from Nishitestu railways, which includes the return trip by train and a punting trip in Yanagawa. There are various other packages too, including some that include a meal at an eel restaurant, which is a local specialty. It's a relaxing and beautiful place to visit!

Yanagawa Punting Tours - The Venice of Japan
A travel guide for riding the canal boats of Yanagawa in Kyushu Japan. Yanagawa, near the city Fukuoka, is a historic town with a massive canal network. On these canals you can take a historic punting tour called Kawakudari in Japanese (literally translates to Downstream).
Getting on a boat at one of the six boat stations in the city, visitors can enjoy an approximately one-hour boat trip. The introduction Kotaoftsubune, a boat equipped withkotatsu (a Japanese style fireplace with a coverlet) in 1965 enabled tourists to enjoy the boat trip all year round. Now there are six boat operators with about 100
boatmen, who also offer emotional and humorous anecdotes as
they guide tourists through the beauty of the seasons, although in Japanese.
for more information on these punting tours (maps/times/prices/etc) you can visit the website of one of the punting tour operators:

Boatride on Yanagawa River - Kyushu ᴴᴰ ● 柳川 九州
► Join me on a little boatride, through some of Yanagawas 470km of canals. Yanagawa City is located 70 km south of Fukuoka - the capital city of Kyushu, the most southern of Japans 4 main islands.
The boatride on the donkobune boat was originally 70 minutes, I took a handful of shots along the way, and I ended up with 3 1/2 minutes worth of footage - I hope you'll like it. - Enjoy!

Yanagawa City - Japan`s Venice
This time we visited Yanagawa City, a place famous for its riverboats and delicious eel.
Yanagawa is known primarily for its hundreds of kilometers of canals.
Riverboats, called donkobune, powered by a man with a pole take tourists on
short cruises, known as kawakudari (going down the river) around the town.
Interesting spots are for example the Yanagawa Ohana, the villa of the Tachibana
family who ruled Yanagawa City 400 years ago or dozens of delicious restaurants which serve
eel dishes. Our presenter Kin from China will show you what this beautiful city has to offer.

Duck Under Bridges On A Boat Tour In Japan's 'City of Water'
In Yanagawa, Japan’s City of Water, tourists can take boat rides where they have to duck under bridges. Riding in these donkobunes, or river boats, is a historical experience because the canals were originally built by farmers for irrigation, and the boat guides sing traditional songs during the ride.

Taking one of the river boats in Yanagawa, Japan. We took a bus from Yanagawa train station in Kyushu prefecture. It was a really beautiful day and this is just a great thing to do as an afternoon outing. Lots of fun! It's really neat because they actually have little vendors along the way that you can purchase snacks and refreshments from.
The river boat ride is ¥1500 per person. Good deal for a few hours of enjoyment.

YANAGAWA(柳川) VLOG KYUSHU, JAPAN.
Yanagawa is popular with Japanese tourists because of its 470 km of wide canals. Yanagawa riverboats, called donkobune, are used to take tourists around the city. In 1987 a video documentary was created by Studio Ghibli about these canals and their restoration. The Story of Yanagawa's Canals (柳川掘割物語 Yanagawa horiwari monogatari) is widely available and includes English subtitles.

2013-03-19 - Boat Ride in Yanagawa
Yanagawa Boat Ride
Yanagawa, Japan is a Venice-like city crisscrossed with canals used in early transportation. During December 2009 I took a boat tour with a few friends and our driver/tour guide was a real charmer.

福岡のベニス、柳川にいってきた!Fukuoka's Venice in Yanagawa City
Tatsu and I decided to visit Yanagawa City, famous for it's river boats and delicious eel. We kind of messed up in terms of season, it's going to be gorgeous when the sakura bloom, but I guess we were lucky that it wasn't too crowded, and the Hina Matsuri decorations were definitely a nice touch! Have you ever been to Yanagawa?
