The Japan?Korea Treaty of 1905, also known as the Eulsa Treaty, deprived the Korean Empire of its diplomatic sovereignty.
Japan then signed the Jiandao Agreement with Qing Dynasty (China).
The Koreans in Jiandao who lost their country went up the Biyan Mountain to the pine tree pavilion (Ilsongjeong) to soothe their grief.
To regain their country, Korean independence activists went through all those harsh and dark times, wandering the plains of Manchuria. Their descendants in Yanbian have gone through the happiness of Korea’s liberation as well as the tragic division of the country.
A century has passed now. How are the descendants, the so-called joseonjok, living in Yanbian? What kind of changes are they going through?
We take a look at the lives and stories of Koreans living in Yanbian, China.

The ISAC University TEFL Program (ISAC-UTP) offers a rewarding experience for foreign teachers to teach at a Chinese public university while experiencing Chinese culture. Teachers are appointed as foreign language experts in their host universities. You will be teaching your language to university students aged between 18-23. Life on the North Korean Border in China: A Tour of Yanji in the Korean Autonomous Prefecture
Hey there guys! I can't believe it, but in just a week, I am going to be leaving China and moving to South Korea to start my graduate school education. On the way, I will be stopping by Japan to see a childhood friend of mine get married and hang out with some friends from college, and will be going back to Taiwan for a short bit! But before I go, I want to show you the place where I have been living for the past 7 months. It's been a bumpy ride (as you will know if you have watched my other videos!) but I really do love this city despite the difficulties I have had living here. I hope you all enjoy this video tribute to my second home, Yanji!

The Asan Foundation invited the Yanbian University students for cultural explorations
The Asan Foundation invited the Yanbian University students who are on the Asan scholarship for cultural explorations including traditional culture experiences and a visit to an advanced production facility.
These Yanbian University students, currently funded by the Asan Foundation, were given the chance to visit and explore Korea during their summer vacation.

The program lasted for 3 nights and 4 days, during which participants were able to look around AMCs major facilities, experience Koreas traditional culture and visit a local production facility.
The Asan Foundation has been funding 180 million won to more than 30 ethnic Korean students attending Yanbian University as scholarship since 2002.
The Asan Foundation has been providing the Asan Scholarship to underprivileged students every year and instilling hopes and dreams in them.

Korean diaspora's food captivates China
Korean language is more commonly used than Chinese in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture located in northeast part of China. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japanese colonial era hit its peak in Korea and countless Koreans left home to settle down in Yanbian. Now, they are called Korean Chinese.
Almost a century has passed, yet Korean Chinese people have preserved the food culture that was passed down from their parents. Their love for Korean food also captivated native Chinese people, and Yanbian even became one of the top 10 gourmet cities in China. Kimchi is known as the representative health food, and Korean side dish shops bustle with people.

Korean food expert Kim Sun-ok is also Korean Chinese. She learned how to make gochujang (chili paste) from her mother and grandmother, and she always reminded herself of her identity by eating doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). She actively publicizes Korean food, and her Korean food class at Yanbian University is a big hit.

Jeongam Village preserves hometown food
Jeongam Village was established in 1938. During the Japanese colonial era, this area was a barren land. Japan decided to move Koreans to this area in hopes of cultivating the land and plundering its resources. That's when 80 families from Chungcheongbuk-do Province immigrated to Jeongam Village.They were faced with arduous labor, cold weather, and hunger, but they remembered their hometown food. They made a simplified version of kimchi to satisfy their cravings and they filled their hungry stomachs with corn noodles. They desperately clung on to their taste of home. Their dining table tells the story of their history.

2019 Vatternrundan China in Yanbian, Jilin Province.
The 8th Vatternrundan China International Cycling Tourism Festival took place on Sunday, 22 September. Yanji, as capital city of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, once again played the role of host city of the event, even though the main race of 135km finished in Tumen, on the border with North Korea.
Denis Okunev from Russia and his compatriot Aleksandra Biankina won the main race in their respective categories this year.

In the city of Yanjui in north eastern China's Yanbian Autonmous Region near the border with North Korea a university has emerged from behind the bamboo curtain. It is the Yanbian University of Science and Technology and it is not what you would normally expect to find in this underdeveloped area close to North Korea. Over 800 students from Chinese and Korean backgrounds are studying here, at what is the first privately funded university in modern China. The school first accepted students in 1992 when it began functioning as a Industrial Technology training Centre which offered one year courses. It has since grown to offer full four year courses specialising in Computers, Science, Economics, Trade and Languages. Schools, churches and individual sponsors help support the university as well as companies and industries which could benefit from the type of education the university offers. For students the North Korean influence is strong, Korean food is served in the cafeteria and after classes students take part in extracurricular activities like traditional Korean music, martial arts and sports.

I'm also very excited about the way that this area maybe, is a kind of pioneering experiment in beginning to also have contact with North Korea, with the university so close to the border. And also with some of the plans we have for future programs across the border.
