In this video we explore the buildings and shops surrounding Sule Pagoda. The Downtown area of Yangon was designed with Sule Pagoda at its heart - Sule Pagoda is in the middle of a roundabout and on its sides it has some famous Yangon landmarks such as the City Hall, The old tourist building, a church and a mosque. Our guest guide will show show us the buildings and tell us of their history. She will also visit some of the small shops that are on the periphery of the Pagoda compound.

Yangon which is formerly known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar (Burma)) with a population of 4,082,000 (in 2005). The city located at the confluence of Yangon and Bago River, away 30 km from the Gulf of Martaban.

In November 2005, the capital city moved from Yangon to Naypyidaw in Mandalay province. Naypyidaw officially became the new capital of Myanmar since March 26th, 2006.

Compared to other major cities in Southeast Asia, Yangon is relatively underdeveloped. The construction is largely developing due to foreign investment from China and Singapore. Many commercial buildings and houses have been built in the city center. Yangon is the place which has the most colonial buildings in East Asia today. The government office in the building was built in colonial time (such as Myanmar Supreme Court, City Hall, Bogyoke Market and the General Hospital are being planned reinforcement upgrade.

VICE traveled to Yangon, Myanmar's cultural capital to learn about the young people who have struggled in the transition period of the country. In this video, we look at Myanmar through the eyes of people who are changing the country's future: two bold girls from the rap group YAK, punks Skum and Kyaw Kyaw, internationally acclaimed artist Moe Satt, and Htet Myet Oo, a restaurant owner who loves his hometown. Yangon (Burmese: ရန်ကုန်; MLCTS: rankun mrui, pronounced [jàŋɡòũ mjo̰]; also known as Rangoon) is a former capital of Burma and the capital of Yangon Division. Although the military government has officially relocated the capital to Naypyidaw since March 2006,[3] Yangon, with a population of four million, continues to be the country's largest city and the most important commercial center.

Yangon's infrastructure is undeveloped compared to those of other major cities in Southeast Asia. Yangon has the largest number of colonial buildings in Southeast Asia today.[4] While many high-rise residential and commercial buildings have been constructed or renovated throughout downtown and Greater Yangon in the past two decades, most satellite towns that ring the city continue to be deeply impoverished.

The largest and best maintained parks in Yangon are located around Shwedagon Pagada. To the southeast of the gilded stupa is the most popular recreational area in the city Kandawgyi Lake. The 150 acre (60.7-hectare) lake is surrounded by the 110 acre (44.5-hectare) Kandawgyi Nature Park,[24] and the 69.25 acre (28-hectare) Yangon Zoological Gardens, which consists of a zoo, an aquarium and an amusement park.[25] West of the pagoda towards the former Hluttaw (Parliament) complex is the 130 acre (53-hectare) Peoples Square and People's Park, (the former parading ground on important national days when Yangon was the capital.)[26] A few miles north of the pagoda lies the 37 acre (15-hectare) Inya Lake Park a favorite hangout place of Yangon University students, and a well-known place of romance in Burmese popular culture.

Hlawga National Park and Allied War Memorial at the outskirts of the city are popular day-trip destinations with the well-to-do and tourists.

Shwedagon Pagoda Probably the most important religious monument and most sacred site in Yangon and throughout Myanmar is the Shwedagon Pagoda, The golden stupa of the pagoda is covered in gold, At the top of the pagoda, in the small umbrella looking top, are thousands of gems and diamonds - though it’s pretty challenging to see all the way up there. The Shwedagon Pagoda is a place you must visit when you’re in Yangon
