Apple CEO Hails Didi Taxi to Meet Chinese Developers in Beijing
The Apple CEO is in town in Beijing along with his company's 1 billion U.S. dollars of investment in a Chinese taxi service company. Tim Cook has taken a taxi ride on Monday with Didi Chuxing's president Jean Liu Qing before meeting software developers in an App Store.
It's Apple's first investment venture in China, long after its namesake desktops, laptops, pads, pods and phones have made inroads into the world's most populous country.
The Apple CEO is sensitive about fat figures.
As you know, Apple invested in her (Jean's) company in the last week, and we are very very proud to have done that. Didi has about 14 million drivers now across China, and 300 million users in China. And as of this morning, that's 300 million and one because Jane and I took a Didi taxi over this morning, Cook says at a meeting with developers, government officials and reporters during his eighth China trip since becoming Apple CEO in 2011.
On the receiving end of this 1 billion-dollar investment, fat figures should last long and deep.
Didi Chuxing marketing director Ye Yun says that the Chinese company would use the Apple investment in refining its products and services, with research and development projects like facial recognition systems which are expected to help both customers and drivers to enjoy their rides.
On her part, Jean Liu Qing says that the cooperation between Didi and Apple has now entered a new phase and its developers have been benefiting from Apple know-how and how-to through its Apple Stores in China.
(Apple Store) is a pragmatic platform and provides a real opportunity for all entrepreneurs. If we can seize this opportunity, we can create even more fascinating stories, says Jean Liu Qing.
Apple had no investment strategy for China before. Its strategy used to be sell products solely and invest nothing. Its investment now may not necessarily reverse its downward trend for good, but may contribute to formulating a layout of the next growth engine, especially an ecological layout, says Hu Yanping, an expert from the Data Center of China Internet.
In Hu's view, the Apple investment in Didi is, to a larger extent, a prelude to Apple Car entering China's smart-car market. He adds that to make inroads into the Chinese smart-car market, local partners and localized operations are the key. Didi can readily serve as Apple's local operation network for Apple cars in future.
Trade pundits have also pointed out to the fact that Apple is expected to promote the use of Apple Pay in China through Didi Chuxing, which now uses Alipay and Tencent's WePay online payment systems.

CHINA: PERES MEETS CHINESE OFFICIALS
English/Nat
Israeli Cabinet Minister Shimon Peres met with Chinese officials in Beijing on Thursday to brief them on the Middle East peace process.
After the meeting Peres said a unilateral declaration by Palestinians to set up a state would harm the Palestinians more than Israel and stir hatred in the Mideast.
Peres said a peace agreement would be possible with flexibility - hopefully while U-S President Bill Clinton was still in office.
U-S-brokered talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders broke down last month amid disagreement about sovereignty over Jerusalem.
Peres told Vice Premier Qian Qichen, the Chinese government's top foreign policy expert, that opponents of the peace negotiations with the Palestinians had lined up against him.
Peres also expressed deepest regrets to Beijing for Israel's decision last month to cancel the sale of a spy plane to China.
In an apparent reference to U-S pressure on Israel to halt the deal, Peres said, We were forced into doing it.
The former prime minister and Nobel peace laureate said Israel wanted to look for ways to repair the damage that was done to ties by the cancellation.
Peres said he also discussed Israeli participation in developing western regions of China.
China is making a priority of developing its poorer western regions.
Peres said that he had proposed that a delegation of Israeli industrialists and investors visit western China and offered to have Israel build a model farm in the region.
China is interested in Israeli irrigation techniques for turning desert into farmland.

It was a wise step by President Arafat because if he would declare unilaterally a state he would have a declaration and not a state and it would lead the Middle East again to an era of polemics and hatred.

And if it will take another month or another year, it is better to take a year and negotiate than to start shooting because you lose your calender.

So my impression is that the Palestinians ask the Arab countries and many other quarters would like to conclude it before the elections take place in the United States of America.

We shall do whatever we can in order to correct this very uneasy experience for us which you know wasn't necessarily our own choice, we were forced into doing so.

More stories from our global VICE family:
Like anywhere else in the world, China love alcohol, and it's probably the best way to get someone in the country to open up. But, as many Chinese people are shy and introverted by nature, the nation's drinking culture is particularly important to understand if you wanna crack a few jokes with the locals.
VICE China brings MC Dawei—a Beijing-based rapper/city boy who can barely handle a couple shots—to China's hardest drinking areas in Yunnan, where the Wa people start drinking homemade liquor starting at 9AM everyday.

The Lively Huaxi Night Market (Snake Alley) in Taipei
Huaxi Night Market aka Snake Alley is now considered politically incorrect and only if you order a snake meal or glass of snake wine will a vendor surreptitiously skin a live snake in front of your eyes.
Huaxi is the oldest tourist destination in Taiwan and enter market through its Chinese traditional gate lit with red hanging lanterns. Only two-blocks long, the night market in Wanhua District was once a legal red light district (the Marine did spot a few prostitutes) and does serve local snacks besides turtle blood and meat, most of which were not to my taste.

Hosting Country Taiwan for 2011 International Exchange Programs -
Azalea International Folk Fair, in collaboration with Lowndes County Schools of Valdosta, GA, USA and ChiaYi City Schools of Chia-Yi, Taiwan, R.O.C. is proud to sponsor a new cultural and educational exchange program.
In 2007, we were able to extend an invitation to the Taiwanese Youth Folk Sports Troupe to perform for our region's four schools (Brooks County Middle, Hahira Middle, Lowndes Middle, and Lowndes High Schools) and an open to the general public performance. From September 30 -- October 2, 2007, five shows reached up to 5,000 audiences. The troupe has traveled around the world to entertain thousands of people with their unique talents, and now, they have even come to Valdosta!! How remarkable that we are putting South Georgia on their world map!
From September 25 -- October 1, 2008, Mr. John Newton, our board member for invention and technology and an instructor of technology and engineering at Lowndes High School, was invited by the International Forum for Invention Promotion (IFIP) to be one of the judges for the 5th annual International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) in Taipei, Taiwan. The then Hahira Middle School student Wesley Newton was sponsored by the Georgia Power Foundation to represent the U.S. alongside the hundreds of students from 13 countries around the world. These inquisitive students built strong cultural and intellectual connections as they shared information about their inventions or simply engaged in friendly conversation.
What a joy to see young people from a wide diversity of backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, and religions take great pleasure in making new friends without boundaries. In this world of invention and technology, young creative minds open their hearts and minds and reach out without hesitation. What a beautiful world!!
From February 27 - March 8, 2010, eighteen exceptionally talented students from Taiwan and the Philippines flew halfway around the world to compete in the Fair's Youth Invention Exhibition. A total of 25 inventions were displayed, representing Taiwan, the Philippines and the United States. Our students were surely inspired.
These young inventors dedicated two entire days to the Folk Fair's school field trip programs, interacting with and presenting their inventions to nearly 2,500 students and teachers from all over South Georgia and North Florida. Seeing their enthusiasm and creativity, teachers responded positively, expressing hope that these inventors can return every year to motivate our local students' interests in science, technology, and invention. The cultural and educational advantage this project has brought to South Georgia's rural schools and communities has indeed been substantial.
All of these we have achieved, yes indeed, we can be rightfully proud - we have opened eyes, expanded horizons, and enriched lives. Because of these international guests, our region's students have learned and experienced things no two-dimensional textbook could provide. In the process, they have gained new perspectives and understandings, learning to appreciate the rich diversity of the world beyond our borders. In today's interconnected, transnational world of supersonic jets, virtual spaces, and globalized economies, instilling a sense of international awareness and responsibility in the youth is more important than ever. This is the reason why the cross-cultural exchanges among countries around the world have become the key issue in the twenty-first century. Valdosta-Lowndes County's teachers and students, of course, should never be left behind.
