Revolution in Ukraine: Dispatch from the Presidential Palace

As protesters in central Kiev took over the parliament building on Saturday, others headed to President Yanukovych's highly controversial private estate of Mezyhrhrya, just outside the city.
The estate, half the size of Monaco, cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build, much of it coming from embezzlement and corruption, and had long been in the protesters' sights. The average monthly salary for an Ukrainian citizen is around 200 Euros, so their President's opulent lifestyle was a constant slap in the face that could no longer be ignored.
VICE News went along with thousands of curious Ukrainians to take a look and walk around Yanukovych's house, like a kleptocrat's version of Cribs.

Ukraine's dictator Yanukovich residence
Yanukovych's multimillion-dollar Mezhyhiriya mansion north of Kyiv, which is usually off-limits to the public and hidden behind nine-meter-high walls, was abandoned at 2 a.m. today, according to security guards, who opened the gates to journalists and citizens.
Thousands made their way to the former state-owned palatial estate that Yanukovych is believed to have privatized and made his personal home through a string of murky deals after becoming president in 2010. The estate has become a symbol of the level of corruption under the Yanukovych regime.
There is a suggestion to make it a Museum of Corruption

Mezhyhirya - Luxurious residence of a former Ukrainian dictator
During his tenure as President of Ukraine, the now fugitive Victor Yanukovych used his position to appropriate a huge country estate, and went on to spend an inordinate amount of the country's budget to transform it into an extravagant private residence.
.
.
Between 2002 and 2014, he improved the estate for his exclusive use : he built lakes and fountains, a helipad, a mock galleon for state meetings, an automobile museum to house his lavish collection of antique cars, a golf course, a private chapel, an ostrich farm, a shooting range, a wellness club. The main residence is a flamboyant exhibition of expensive wood and marble features, an expansive art collection, a private cinema, and kitsch, lavishly decorated private quarters - among a variety of other spaces.
.
.
After the Euromaidan Revolution of 2014, the dictator fled and protesters re-appropriated the complex, giving it back to the people of Ukraine. This is a video revealing the secrets and opulence of the historic main residence.

In Kyiv, about 200 cars packed with pro-EU protesters left European Square near Independence Square on Sunday morning.
They drove to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's residence, furious over a decision by the government in November to turn its back on closer ties with the European Union and turn instead to former Soviet master Moscow.
They were joined by over a thousand protesters who who walked 10 kilometers from the nearest metro station.
Sunday's protest follows a prominent activist and opposition journalist being dragged from her car and badly beaten on Wednesday.
Tetyana Chornovol is known for her investigative reporting into corruption among top government officials. She remains hospitalised.
The attack has breathed new life into more than a month of opposition protests in the capital.
As thousands protested outside the president's residence, tens of thousands remained in Independence Square listening to the speeches of government opposition leaders.

Ukraine: thousands stage protest outside Yanukovich's residence
Even if the number of protesters do seem to fall slightly from day to day, there is still tens of thousands of demonstrators on Independence Square, in the centre of Kiev. Protesters there show no sign of moving away - the sound system has even been upgraded! However, president Viktor Yanukovych doesn't seem to be willing to make any concessions, sitting on the huge Russian loans, which he knows will help the Ukrainian economy on the short term.

Ukrainians take a look around Yanukovich compound
Ukrainians have had a first look around the grounds of President Viktor Yanukovich's residence outside the capital Kyiv since it was taken over by protesters.
Visitors who streamed into the compound have been in disbelief at the scale of the opulence. The property on 140 hectares in Mezhyhirya, an hours drive from the capital, has a golf course, helicopter pad and a garage full of classic cars worth millions.
I can't believe it that we are all here and people actually got in here! Because it ...

Inside Ukraine's lavish 'Museum of Corruption'
(6 Jul 2018) LEADIN
The lavish lifestyle and corruption of Ukraine's former president has become an unlikely tourist attraction near Kiev.
Viktor Yanukovych's former palatial home, complete with chandeliers, a private zoo and manicured gardens, has been seized by the public and has now become something akin to a 'museum of corruption'.
STORYLINE
Surrounded by acres of woodland and built on a former nature reserve, this is the impressive estate known as Mezhyhirya.
The palatial house was once home to the former president Viktor Yanukovych and was designed to resemble an oversized hunting lodge.
A lake, private fountain and manicured gardens add to the sense of grandeur.
Inside is just as luxurious - visitors marvel at a gold-plated chandelier, expensive furniture, rare blue marble stairs and a white Steinway piano.
Thousands of tourists have visited his estate since Yanukovych fled Ukraine to Russia in February 2014. Then, protestors entered his residence, which was eventually seized by the state.
Prime Morfey is visiting from Ireland and says he's astonished by the display of wealth.
I think it's amazing but I'm saddened to see how much money was spent given the poverty that existed in Ukraine. But it's a phenomenal building. But very sad at the same time.
Yanukovych moved into the estate when he became Prime Minister in 2002. He was later elected President in 2010 and served until he was ousted in 2014.
One visitor from Israel, Alex Ayvirov adds: Yanukovych differs from the others as he stole everything. While other oligarchs produced something or had a corporation, he was a politician who simply stole money, took away businesses, but I don't know for sure. Frankly speaking the house it is pretty tawdry, very palatial. The normal person would never live here.
Now the residence is one of the most popular places to spend the weekend for Ukrainians and also a must see destination for foreign tourists
Petro Oliynyk was among the first to get inside Yanukovych's home in 2014 and saw how the former president lived.
Four years on Petro now works a guide.
He says after Yanukovych left Ukraine, thousands pages of documents were found, including accounting papers.
According to their (Mezhyhirya owners) accounting, more than 2 billion US dollars are invested in the property. The papers said it cost around 100 US dollars to keep it daily, 4 million US dollars were spent to keep Mezhyhirya. At least 500 families in Ukraine live in such properties, it helps to understand the reasons (of poverty) better, he says.
In 2017, Mezhyhirya was returned to state ownership by a court order.
Governor of Mezhyhirya Residence, Denys Tarakhkotelyk says it is now in public hands and a reminder of the excesses of corrupt officials.
Mezhyhirya is national park today. This is how people call it, it doesn't have such judicial status. But 100 percent of people who visit it, officials and lawmakers of Verkhovna Rada (parliament), foreign tourists all of them agree that it has to be a national park and Honka (main house) is the museum
of corruption.
The sprawling estate is also home to a private zoo and farm.
But when the former president and his staff left, the animals faced a difficult situation.
When he heard about the situation, biologist Serhiy Grygoriev decided to go and help the animals.
Since then he's been keeping, feeding and caring for the animals every day.
The zoo is now one of the estate's many attractions, along with the gardens and fountains.

Mezhyhirya is the former residence of Ex-president Viktor Yanukovich near Kyiv
Mezhigorie. The residence of ukrainian dictator Yanukovich. The new Versailles?
It was not possible previously. Who could imagine that simple Ukrainian people would have the opportunity to visit the residence of the newfound dictator Yanukovich. The luxury of his castle goes far above many world's known palaces. Now it is clearly understood why ukrainian people had been fighting against the corruption. This inreview was taken with Vladimir Pavlovskiy - the representative of usual people of Ukraine, who wish to show the truth with the criminal power which ruled our country for the last years. Now the question is - what to do with this residence. People want this property to be either The Museum of Corruption and dictatorship or just a hospital for children who suffer from cancer disease.
