STORYLINE
Rescuers were starting to arrive in some of the more remote villages in China's Sichuan province on Sunday, more than 24 hours after a devastating earthquake destroyed thousands of hillside homes in the region, killing at least 180 people and leaving 11,000 injured and many more homeless.
Relief workers, however, were struggling to rush supplies into the rural hills, with roads cut off and rain hampering their efforts.
The earthquake Saturday morning triggered landslides that cut off roads and disrupted phone and power connections in mountainous Lushan county.
Hardest hit were villages further up the valleys, where farmers grow rice, vegetables and corn on terraced plots.
In Longquan village, piles of rubble and debris from damaged and destroyed buildings filled the streets.
Village resident Yang Shanqing broke his right arm in the quake, but members of his family were trapped and killed when his house collapsed.
I ran back to the village and was told at the entrance of the village that my brother's house had collapsed. I rushed here only to see crowd of people trying to grab the family out of the ruins but failed, said the 37-year-old.
His father, brother and brother's son were killed and his brother's wife was seriously injured.
Other Longquan residents said they still had no access to clean water and electricity and appealed to the government for immediate assistance.
Frightened survivors had spent the night in cars, tents and makeshift shelters.
Rescuers hiked into neighbouring Baoxing county after its roads were cut off, reaching it overnight, state media reported.
In Longmen village, authorities said nearly all the buildings had been destroyed in a frightening minute-long shaking by the quake.
The quake, which measured at magnitude 7.0 by Chinese authorities and at 6.6 by the US Geological Survey, struck shortly after 8 a.m. (0000GMT) Saturday.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived Saturday afternoon by helicopter in Ya'an to direct rescue efforts, the government's official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Lushan, where the quake struck, lies where the fertile Sichuan plain meets foothills that eventually rise to the Tibetan plateau and sits atop the Longmenshan fault.
It was along the same fault line that a devastating magnitude-7.9 quake struck on May 12, 2008, leaving more than 90,000 people dead or missing and presumed dead in one of the worst natural disasters to strike China in recent decades.
The Xinhua News Agency said the well-known Bifengxia panda preserve, near Lushan, was not affected by the quake.

SUMMARY
=======
The Cultural Revolution, formally the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in China from 1966 until 1976. Launched by Mao Zedong, then Chairman of the Communist Party of China (CPC), its stated goal was to preserve CPC-style Communism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society, and to re-impose Mao Zedong Thought (known outside China simply as Maoism) as the dominant ideology within the Party. The Revolution marked Mao's return to a position of power after the failures of his Great Leap Forward. The movement paralyzed China politically and negatively affected both the economy and society of the country to a significant degree.
The movement was launched in May 1966, after Mao alleged that bourgeois elements had infiltrated the government and society at large, aiming to restore capitalism. To eliminate his rivals within the Communist Party of China, Mao insisted that revisionists be removed through violent class struggle. China's youth responded to Mao's appeal by forming Red Guard groups around the country. The movement spread into the military, urban workers, and the Communist Party leadership itself. It resulted in widespread factional struggles in all walks of life. In the top leadership, it led to a mass purge of senior officials, most notably Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping. During the same period, Mao's personality cult grew to immense proportions.
In the violent struggles that ensued across the country, millions of people were persecuted and suffered a wide range of abuses including public humiliation, arbitrary imprisonment, torture, hard labor, sustained harassment, seizure of property and sometimes execution. A large segment of the population was forcibly displaced, most notably the transfer of urban youth to rural regions during the Down to the Countryside Movement. Historical relics and artifacts were destroyed and cultural and religious sites were ransacked.
Mao officially declared the Cultural Revolution to have ended in 1969, but its active phase lasted until the death of military leader and proposed Mao successor Lin Biao in 1971. After Mao's death and the arrest of the Gang of Four in 1976, reformers led by Deng Xiaoping gradually began to dismantle the Maoist policies associated with the Cultural Revolution. In 1981, the Party declared that the Cultural Revolution was responsible for the most severe setback and the heaviest losses suffered by the Party, the country, and the people since the founding of the People's Republic.
