Yapahuwa, Sri Lanka - The Ancient Rock Fortress
Yapahuwa is reminiscent of Sigiriya, with a moat and multiple castle-walls surrounding a rocky outcrop. It was renowned as a defensive fortification even before it became a kingdom, with a general named Subha having held out there against Kalinga Magha's invading army of 24,000.
The most striking feature that greets you at Yapahuwa is the 70 degree staircase.
At top of the climb is the Dalada Maligawa, where the tooth relic was kept for 12 years.
The view from this point is breathtaking. The plains of the dry zone scattered with rocky outcrops is visible in all its glory. There is more to climb after this point, if you dare. There's a rock pool, the ruins of a stupa, and a panoramic view at the top.
Yapahuwa - THE ANCIENT KINGDOM
The rock fortress complex of Yapahuwa is situated in the North Western Province, Sri Lanka. It is approximately between southeast of Mahawa midway Kurunegala and Anuradhapura. The original name of this Buddhist Heritage is Yapawwa, but now this is called as Yapahuwa.

Exploring the ancient kingdom of Yapahuwa
One day exploration journey to yapahuwa rock fortress. 7th April 2019.
YAPAHUWA
Yapahuwa (Sinhalese language : යාපහුව) was one of the ephemeral capitals of medieval Sri Lanka. The citadel of Yapahuwa lying midway between Kurunagala and Anuradhapura was built around a huge granite rock rising abruptly almost a hundred meters above the surrounding lowlands.
In 1272, King Bhuvenakabahu transferred the capital from Polonnaruwa to Yapahuwa in the face of Dravidian invasions from South India, bringing the Sacred Tooth Relic with him. Following the death of King Bhuvenakabahu in 1284, the Pandyans of South India invaded Sri Lanka once again, and succeeded in capturing Sacred Tooth Relic. Following its capture, Yapahuwa was largely abandoned and inhabited by Buddhist monks and religious ascetics.

The story of Yapahuwa rewinds back to 1272 where the King Bhuvenakabahu has bought the capital, which was in Polonnaruwa in that time, to Yapahuwa. He has bought the Sacred Tooth Relic with him and established the new Kingdom here. However, after the king's death in 1284, the Kingdom got abandoned and inhabited by monks.
Yapahuwa was built on a huge rock boulder resembling the shape of world famous rock, Sigiriya. It was a palace and a military stronghold against invaders who came to capture the Sacred Tooth Relic.
You can witness a small beautiful temple on the way to rock fortress, which is addressed as Yapahuwa Rajamaha Viharaya.
There are many caves discovered that were used to have a shrine with Buddha images and Brahmi script inscription.
The temple is easily reachable from the main road and one should not miss visiting this breathtaking Kingdom to acknowledge the proud yet isolated history of this unique palace that used to be a major place in this country once.

Temple of Yapahuwa - Sri lanka ............
Yapahuwa is located a little way off the Kurunegala-Anuradhapura road, in the Wayamba province of Sri Lanka. Of all the ancient ruins in the country the Rock Fortress Complex of Yapahuwa is considered to be quite remarkable despite the fact that it isn't famous among most visitors. However, it is renowned as one of the best archeological site in the country. It is even rumored to be more significant than The Rock Fortress in Sigiriya.
History Of Yapahuwa ..........
In the early 13th century Yapahuwa was the capital of the country and it housed the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha for 11 Years. King Bhuvanekabhu I, the son of the King Parakramabahu who at that time ruled Dambadeniya, was stationed at Yapahuwa in order to protect the Country from Invaders; built the palace and the temple. After the Fortress was abandoned monks converted it into a monastery and monks still reside among the ancient ruins. Even today signs of early defense mechanisms can still be seen among the ruins.

Structural Significance ..........
On top of the rock the remains of a stupa, a Bodhi tree, and a rock shelter/cave used by Buddhist monks is visible. A couple of caves are seen at the base of the rock, one of which is a Buddhist Shrine whereas another cave has some inscriptions on it. The rock fortress has a strong resemblance to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

Yapahuwa
The rock fortress complex of Yapahuwa is situated in the Wayamba province of Sri Lanka. Yapahuwa served as the capital of Sri Lanka in the latter part of the 13th century (1273-1284). Built on a huge rock boulder in the style of the Sigiriya rock fortress, Yapahuwa was a military stronghold against foreign invaders.
Yapahuwa An ancient fortress and capital built in the year 1273. Yapahuwa is a rock rising to a height of 90m. Many traces of ancient battle defences can still be seen, while an ornamental stairway, remains its biggest showpiece.
Yapahuva the the 13th Century capital in Sri Lanka, was made King Buvanekabahu I (1273-1284). Here the chief object is the rock which rises about 300 ft above the surrounding land. The land at the base to the south is fortified with two moats and ramparts . In this enclosure there are the remains of a number of buildings.
The Tooth Relic too was brought from Dambadeniya and kept in the Tooth Temple built for the purpose at the top of the third staircase.
A 48 minute DVD film, made in 2001 all about Yapahuwa is available from george.hodges@talk21.com
This fortress capital capital of the Sinhalese kings when abandoned was inhabited by Buddhist monk and religious ascetics. The relics were carried away from the temple here to South India by the Pandyas, and then recovered in 1288 by Parakkramabahu III (r1287-1293), who temporarily placed them in safety at Polonnaruwa. ROUTES Return from the main road and turn north to Mahagalkadawala (24km); turn left in town to see Rajangane (1km) and Anuradhapura (37km).
The original name of this Buddhist Heritage site is Yapawwa though now often called as Yapahuwa which is a kind of distortion of its genuine etymological sense.
