Trees of Brisbane - Charles Jenkins
Brisbane is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland and the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane is named after the river on which it sits which, was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825.
One way to experience Brisbane in one day is by visiting its historic building and sites, and its retail precints at Queen Street mall.
Brisbane City Hall, then the city's tallest building and the Shrine of Remembrance, in ANZAC Square, which has become Brisbane's main war memorial was built in 1930s.
These historic buildings along with the Story Bridge, which opened in 1940 are key landmarks that help define the character of the city.
The Old Windmill, in Wickham Park, built by convict labour in 1824, is the oldest surviving building in Brisbane. The Old Windmill was originally used for the grinding of grain and a punishment for the convicts who manually operated the grinding mill.
Newstead House is the oldest house in Brisbane. This house was built by Brisbane's first architect and builder Andrew Petrie for fellow Scottish settler Patrick Leslie in 1846 on the Breakfast Creek bank of the Brisbane River, in the suburb of Newstead. Patrick Leslie was the first squatter on the Darling Downs, and the first person to buy land in Warwick, Queensland.
The building was occupied by American troops during World War II. An Australian-American War Memorial was built in the grounds of Newstead House in memory of this.
If you book a half day tour of the city, the tour guide will most likely bring you to Hamilton, an inner northern suburb of Brisbane.
In Brisbane's early history, Hamilton was the home to many aristocrats and clergy. This suburb is known for being an old wealth . Many of Brisbane's iconic mansions of Queenslander architecture can be found in Hamilton.
Queenslander buildings are primarily of timber construction and can be low or high-set, one to two storeys. They are typically tripartite in sectional composition; underfloor (stumps), primary rooms (can be two levels), and roof. All have one or more veranda spaces. This consideration for climate is the defining characteristic of the Queenslander type.
At the last part of your tour, make sure to leave plenty of time to explore Queen Street Mall, which has a vast array of cafes, restaurants, cinemas, gift shops and shopping centres and is home to many luxury international retailers, such as MaxMara, Bally, Mont Blanc, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany and Co., Oroton, Polo Ralph Lauren, Bvlgari, Hugo Boss, Hermes, and more.

Sovereignty!
Eviction of the aboriginal sovereign tent embassy from Musgrave Park West End Brisbane by the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council on 16 May 2012.
In 1998 the Qld government handed over a section of land at Musgrave Park to the Yaggera people.
FOLLOWING a struggle that lasted more than 20 years, the Musgrave Park Aboriginal Corporation (MPAC) secured a portion of Musgrave Park in South Brisbane to build a cultural centre.
The Queensland Government handed over a Deed of Grant in Trust to the Brisbane City Council, which was supposed to negotiate a lease with the MPAC.
In 2012 the freshly sworn-in LNP government of Gammin' Newman* took away the rights of aboriginal people to have sacred fire in Musgrave Park. Two months previously Aboriginal nations sung their ancestors spirits into the sacred fire that was lit 40 years ago at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra. The state government took away the rights of aboriginal people under the Federal Heritage Protection Act to observe ceremony and culture in this sacred place. Then MPAC President Selwyn Johnson said
Every Murri knows that Musgrave Park, in Brisbane, is where you go to meet the Murris . . . It is also spiritually significant . . . as is well known, as is well documented Selwyn Johnson said he was very proud to accept the long-term lease from the Council but the struggle had been going on for much more than 20 years and that the decision was well and truly overdue. After all the kicks in the guts, and after all the opposition, the MPAC had finally been given the go-ahead to develop and establish a cultural centre on our own piece of land, Mr Johnson said. The significance of Musgrave Park to Murri people is well known . . . right throughout this country.
The Qld Police Force unlawfully arrested 35 people observing culture and ceremony around that sacred fire in Musgrave Park -- cultural practices that have gone on for over 60,000 years. They charge those people with 'obstruction'. This is a technical offence that requires the police to assert to the court that they were acting lawfully. The police were acting unlawfully because aboriginal people were observing cultural business around that sacred fire. The Qld government should immediately withdraw those charges against the 35 people arrested and charged.
The Qld government should assist the return of the sacred fire and sovereign rights of aboriginal people in Musgrave Park. But they will not, despite the unlawfulness of the behaviour of police and Brisbane City Council that replaced the bora and sacred fire with an amusement park. The Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Alderman Quirk, instructed the Panyiri festival chairperson Chris Kazonis to write a letter to Brisbane City Council asking for the Sovereign Tent Embassy to be removed. Chris Kazonis complied with this request citing safety reasons. Last Saturday (12 May 2012) the Lord Mayor of Brisbane refused to guarantee the safety of the occupants of the Aboriginal Tent embassy. He initiated the unlawful use of force against the tent embassy people. This is documented in the video below.

A Comeng & Steam Train at Footscray
On July 8th 2017, I decided to go down to Footscray and get a shot of R711 returning back to Newport after spending the day at Echuca, here we see a Comeng train arriving into Footscray to pick up and drop off passengers, when I heard the whistle from as distance away and a loud horn from Comeng 504M, after departing Footscray R711 appeared out of the night and raced through Footscray in hope to get home safely.
*Please notice the whistle on R711 sounds a bit different, sort of like the whistle from R766 or the West Coast Railway times.
