MIFUNE MATSURI AND THE PROBLEM WITH ARASHIYAMA'S BAMBOO FOREST 三船祭り嵐山
The Mifune Matsuri is one of the most unique festivals I've seen. It's a re-enactment of an imperial boating party from the Heian Period held in Arashiyama every year. I also later look at the problem that's been plaguing the beautiful bamboo forest of Arashiyama.

Gion Matsuri: The Hokaboko Float’s Journey
July in Kyoto is completely dominated by the Gion Festival, one of the most famous festivals in all Japan. Occurring first in 869 and an annual event since 970, the Gion Matsuri has a lot of history to draw from and includes a variety of rituals and entertainment. The popular stars of the festival though, are the 33 floats built and maintained by local neighborhoods in central Kyoto that appear in the grand Yamaboko Junkō parades. Each float has distinct décor, history, and traditions woven in to the larger Gion Festival framework. One float neighborhood was kind enough to let us inside their headquarters to observe some of their activities and track the float through its time in the parade. Join us and the Hōkaboko float on a journey through the 2014 Gion Festival!

Places to Go: Cherry Blossoms at Shirakawa-dori
A scenic street in the heart of the Gion area, Shirakawa-dōri lies alongside the Shirakawa canal and is flanked by willow on one side and sakura cherry trees on the other. The buildings that line the canal are high-class restaurants, inns, and teahouses that offer gorgeous riverside dining and Kyoto cuisine. Since it's slightly off the beaten path it isn't as crowded as other areas of Gion can get. A popular local shrine, Tatsumi Daimyōjin, is situated at the fork in the cobblestone path, and bridges over the bubbling river lead off to the local geisha districts.

Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street, Kyoto, Japan. 嵯峨鳥居本 - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
The little atago furumichi, know as Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street, is located in the sagano area, in Kyoto, Japan. It is a 500 meters long well preserved street, with old japanese houses. A very pleasant place to walk and on the way we can visit the Adashino Nenbutsuji temple. It is a little walk from Arashiyama bamboo grove and tenryuji temple.

Epic Japan: New Years Eve at Chion-in Temple, Kyoto
Buddhist monks ring a giant bell at Chion-in Temple, Kyoto 108 times as the world enters its next spin around the sun.
Adashino Nenbutsu-ji (念仏寺) Temple, Kyoto Prefecture
Adashino nenbutsu-ji (念仏寺) temple is located near Saga Arashiyama district in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
From ancient times, the dead used to be buried in Adashino area. This temple is said to have been founded by Kukai (Kobo Daishi, 774-835) who was a priest, and also a founder of Shingon Sect in Buddhism. He buried the dead and reposed souls in this area in the 9th century. After that, this temple became a sacred center of learning and practicing the teaching of Amida Buddha by Hone, who is a priest and also a founder of the Pure Land in Buddhism in the 12th century. Since then, this temple is called Nembutsu-ji.
In the precinct of this temple, there are about eight thousand stones of Buddha. It is quite a sight..
In addition, there is a Bamboo grove with a tomb stone for a wealthy merchant of the Adashino area, who helped the temple. Also, there is a scaled down version of Sanchi Stupa in the temple precincts.
Hope you get a chance to visit this temple and enjoy it.
Vlog - Japan Trip - Day 2 - Kyoto Part 3
Oh yes! New intro to the videos is up.
It was a long walk through the Fushimi Inari shrine. The peak was beautiful and it was worth going the distance.
Made it to Gion for Kyoto style sushi, but before that we stumbled into Yasaka shrine. (honestly we had no idea what that shrine was when we were there)
