Ya Thea Pyan Cave was known in the colonial literature as P'agat Cave. The current name Ya Thea Pyan translates as Hermit Cave (as Ya Thea mean hermit). The cave is in a hill next to Kawgon Cave.
A concrete staircase leads up to the cave. The entrance chamber contains many Buddhas and a statue of the hermit. Behind the reclining Buddha is a natural pool of ‘holy’ water. The main chamber is large. A route leads down to lower muddy areas. Going up towards the back of the main chamber leads to a very impressive upper entrance, with a couple of wooden ladders to aid progress. There are some huge dry stals at the top, well lit by sunlight.
Cave was surveyed in 2009, 433m.

Hpa-an was one of our most favorite places on our trip through Myanmar. The town itself is the capital of the Kayin State, but the beautiful surrounding is what it makes it so special.
We rented an (awesome) motorbike (yes, with a basket in front) and we'll show you around the sights and caves of Hpa-an.
In this episode you will see impressions of the Saddar Cave and the Hpa-Pu Mountain.

The 7th-century artwork of the Kawgun Cave consists of thousands of tiny clay buddhas and carvings plastered all over the walls and roof of this open cavern. Just over a mile away is the Yathaypyan Cave, which contains several pagodas as well as a few more clay wall carvings.

Ya The Byan Cave - Hpa An , Karen State
The Ya-The-Byan Cave is one of the natural limestone cave which is situated on the western side of Than Lwin River at 116 Feet above sea-level , neat the Ya-The-Byan village , Hpa An Township , Kayin State
On the eastern wall and the interior of the Ya-The-Byan Cave , votive tablets and many Buddha images of different sizes from 3 inches to 5 feet in height can be seen , As there is no direct sunlight , the original workmanship of Buddha images is well preserved and can be viewed today , Studies show that statues , images and votive tablets were donated in the 17th Century by many pilgrims and devotees who wanted to make merit from near by region , I here are three Buddha images in sitting and standing positions which are nearly 5 feet in the height and carved on the walls
A significant motif of these Buddha images is the rising of flames from the hair-knot , Some of Buddha images can be dated to the top A.D 13th Century , Some of the votive tablets have been lost due to natural disaster and long duration
The department of Archaeology , Nation Library and Museum of Ministry of Culture has preserved and maintained the Ya-The-Byan Cave since 1975.

Sights To See In Hpa An, Myanmar
While in Hpa-An, Myanmar we hired a driver to take us around the sights. It was a good thing we did, the caves, temples and other points of interest were spread out and would have been difficult to locate on our own. Some of the sights we saw included the Yathei Pyan (aka Yathebyan) cave, Kawgoon cave, Kyaukka Latt Paya, Lumbini garden, Ye Dagon Paya, Saddan cave and Kawkataung (aka Kawka Taung) cave. To read more about how we hired our guide, where we found him, and the costs, check out this article (

Bayin Nyi Cave , Hot Spring , Hpa An , Karen State
The Bayin Nyi cave is located north of Hpa-An; the closet notable town is Thaton. As you walk up the hill to the cave, there is a large entrance chamber that is filled with many statues and Buddhas.
Leading into the caves is a raised path. It is raised because seasonal rains sometimes cause some areas to pool. Just inside the main cave is a pagoda that is a relatively modern structure.
The cave itself is not illuminated by natural light. However, there are said to be intermittent areas that are lit by sunlight through small openings in the rock ceiling. During the latter part of the wet season, there is sometimes a chance to enjoy hot springs that form due to the amount of water in the area.

The historical Kaw Goon Cave - HD
The historic Kaw Goon Cave is a natural limestone cave famous for its Mon cultural-style clay Buddha images and votive tablets.
Reclining Buddha figure outside entrance to Kaw Goon Cave
“According to my studies, there are 23 lines of Mon language inscribed on the stone saffron robe of a standing-style Buddha image. After thorough reading, I speculate that the stone inscription could be from the sixth or seventh century AD. Now, the inscription can’t be read. It is too blurred. The Department of Archeology had made an earlier copy of the inscription, [and] I did my reading from that copy,” said Nai Maung Toe, a Mon historian and retired staff of the Union of Myanmar Ministry of Culture.
The Mon inscription reads, “This Buddha image was built while I, the queen of Mote-ta-ma, was staying in the town of Duwop. All Buddha images in the town of Duwop and its rural regions were built by me and my fellows.”
Clay Buddha images line the natural limestone inner wall of Kaw Goon Cave, which is decorated with three-inch, three-and-half-inch, four-inch, six-inch, and eight-inch votive tablets of the Buddha image.
“The inscribed stone walls of Kaw Goon Cave in [what used to be] the old city of Wel-kha-ru, Be-Linn Township, were previously maintained by the Department of Archeology. Now, the Kaw Goon Cave has been nominated as a cultural zone, so I think the [caves] can be maintained in more modern ways,” continued Nai Maung Toe.
