Yatsushiro, Kumamoto
Yatsushiro (八代市 Yatsuhiro-shi?) is a city located in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.
As of April 30, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 133,630 and a population density of 196.34 persons per km2. The total area is 680.59 km2. It is the second largest city in the prefecture after Kumamoto City.
Yatsushiro City is situated on the aptly named Yatsushiro Sea in between Kumamoto and Ashikita City. It has several train lines that run through it as well as a Shinkansen line. In addition, the Kyushu Expressway and Minamikyushu Expressway converges here. The Yatsushiro District is known for connecting the east part of Kumamoto Prefecture with the west part which connects to Miyazaki Prefecture.
On August 1, 2005, Yatsushiro absorbed the towns of Kagami and Senchō, and the villages of Izumi, Sakamoto and Tōyō (all from Yatsushiro District) to create the new and expanded city of Yashushiro.
Yatsushiro is known locally for several products and dishes. The banpeiyu fruit bears a resemblance to hugely oversized grapefruits. Karashi Renkon is a specialty which is a lotus root stuffed in a mustard-like sauce called karashi. Basashi is raw horse meat and is considered a delicacy within Japan. It is often served with onion and ginger.
The city's landmarks include the ruins of Yatsushiro Castle (now part of a shinto shrine) and the often overlooked port area that offers magnificent views of the nearby Amakusa islands, Yatsuhiro Sea, and the local paper factory.
A flight of 777 stairs into the nearby mountains is located at one end of the town and is a popular attraction. The lookout point provides a panoramic view of the town and the coastal areas.
The main shopping area, the honmachi, is a covered arcade that runs for several city blocks. However, since the opening of two large malls nearby the area has been in decline.

熊本県八代市（旧 肥後国八代郡）にある日本の城である。江戸時代初期に球磨川河口の松江に幕府の許可を得て建築されたことから松江城（現八代城趾）とも言う。
同じく八代城とも呼ばれた南北朝時代の古麓城と安土桃山時代の麦島城の三つの城跡を併せて、平成26年（2014年）に「八代城跡群（やつしろしろあとぐん）」との名称で一括して国の史跡に指定された。

Kumamoto Prefecture designated special disaster area
日구마모토현 특별재해지역 지정
The Japanese government has designated the disaster situation in Kumamoto Prefecture as extremely severe after a series of fatal earthquakes.
Bruce Harrison joins me now in the studio.
Bruce, this means Kumamoto will now get more money to help in its recovery.
That's right. The central government quickly assessed the damage... and decided it warranted the extremely severe designation.
According to the Asahi Shimbun,... the central government will now pay for 90 percent of the recovery cost.
The government estimates damage at more than 4 billion U-S dollars.... Potential dangers still exist... including unsound structures.
Such stone walls are the most dangerous as they have already collapsed and if we don't pay attention during our work, they might easily lead to further danger.
The Kumamoto government has designated more than 4-thousand homes unsafe -- a sign that thousands of displaced people will have to wait longer to return home.

Castle Festival is Hitoyoshi-shi of Kumamoto every year on first Sunday of the May.
SL Hitoyoshi leaves Kumamoto Station at 9:41 and arrives at Hitoyoshi Station at 12:13.
You arrive and finish lunch and will enjoy a festival.
By the festival, there are the performances such as a samurai parade / iai / horseback archery /the gun firing.

Visit for streaming and downloading a full version. Official trailer of Hyoho Taisharyu documentary film. A documentary film about a group of modern day samurai, who train in a 450 year old traditional style of Japanese swordsmanship - “Hyoho Taisharyu”(兵法タイ捨流）.
The Hyoho Taisharyu documentary, filmed in the spring of 2014, captures a moment in time in the ongoing story of one of the oldest martial arts schools in Japan.
It includes exclusive and penetrating interviews with Eriko Uehara, the granddaughter of the late 13th Headmaster who is striving to master the art and with the head of the dojo, Master Yamamoto Takahiro who has dedicated his life to preserve and now promote this unique, pure and almost unknown tradition to both his fellow Japanese and to the wider world.
This film shows many of the skills and techniques of Hyoho Taisharyu. It includes Kata (pair training with wooden swords), Iai (real sword drawing techniques) and Kumidachi (pair training with real swords).
Filming locations of demonstrations and interviews include various areas in Yatsushiro-city, Hitoyoshi-city and the Kuma-gun that were associated with the founder Kurando Marume. These include: the Japanese National Treasure Aoi-Aso shrine, the remains of Hitoyoshi castle, Kanrenji temple and Sokakuji temple.
