UK: REPLICA OF JOHN CABOT'S SHIP IS TO MAKE SAME JOURNEY TO CANADA
Natural Sound
It was one of the great voyages of discovery - when John Cabot arrived on the shores of Bonavista and discovered Canada, five hundred years ago.
The ship Cabot journeyed in, The Matthew, has been replicated and will retrace that historic voyage from the port of Bristol to mark the 500th anniversary.
It started the seven week voyage on Friday with the Duke of Edinburgh - husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II - at the helm.
In 1497 John Cabot arrived on the shores of an undiscovered country.
Sailing in his tiny wooden ship, The Matthew, he journeyed into the unknown, eventually arriving at what is now Canada.
Five hundred years later, a modern replica of his ship set off on Friday from the western English port of Bristol to retrace Cabot's original voyage to Newfoundland.
Prince Philip took the helm of The Matthew to start her off on her trans-Atlantic journey.
A band marked the Matthew's departure from the quay side.
After a service at Bristol Cathedral to bless the Matthew and a civic lunch, Prince Philip boarded the ship to the cheers of hundreds of spectators.
The first leg of the voyage was a short and mainly symbolic journey to the Cumberland basin, during which Prince Philip - a former naval officer - steered most of the way.
The crew of 19, dressed in medieval costume, intend to follow Cabot's original route to Canada. They expect to be at sea for seven weeks.
Crowds of sightseers turned up to welcome the Matthew and its royal passenger.
Prince Philip was greeted by another brass band and Military welcome.
Costing 1 (m) million five hundred thousand pounds to build (U-S 2 million 250-thousand dollars) The Matthew is privately funded by a British businessman, Mike Slade.
To mark the event Bristol city has organised three days of celebrations including a two mile fun fair, concerts and parades. The port was once the thriving centre of British naval exploration and trade.
On Saturday the ship will leave the Cumberland Basin and pass under the Clifton Suspension Bridge amid a huge fireworks display.
It will then enter Royal Portbury Dock for further celebrations before finally heading off on its historic journey.
Prince Philip won't be risking the dangers of the Atlantic - he'll accompany the Queen to Canada to welcome The Matthew when it arrives in Newfoundland on June 24.

Ship that discovered America - a replica of John Cabot's ship that discovered America.
This tiny ship was built as an experiment. When it was floated it turned upside down. It needed to be sorted out and since it has been it has been sailed around the seas. It is a model of The Matthew that John Cabot used to discover The New World. Colombus only got as far as the Carribean. This replica of The Matthew does trips around the Harbour and you can hire it out for private functions.
