Haunting ghostly history of England's oldest pub - Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem pub review
A look at the spooky history of the England's oldest inn. Hewn out of the rock under Nottingham Castle, it officially dates back to 1189, but is thought to have been built along with the castle and river rerouting to supply the castle in 1068. As you probably already know, water back then spelt danger, so was usually brewed into safe beer. This pub and adjacent brew house supplied the castle's soldiers and even had an adjoining shout hole that acted as a direct line to the inn's cellarman. Over 800 years of often quite gruesome history hasn't gone by without leaving a ghostly imprint into the very fabric and ambience of this fabulous pub.

YE OLDE TRIP TO JERUSALEM - The Oldest Inn in England - 3D Tour
Built from our 3D tour of the oldest pub in England, in Nottingham. The pub is famous for its caves, carved out of the soft sandstone rock against which the building is set. The larger ground level caverns are now used as the pub’s rear drinking rooms. There is also a network of caves beneath the building, originally used as a brewery. They seem to date from around the time of the construction of the castle (1068 AD).

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem - The Oldest Pub In England
Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is said to be the oldest Pub in England. It is built into the caves below Nottingham Castle and is one of the coolest pubs you will ever see the back walls and much of the ceilings are the stone ceiling and walls of the caves.
Nottingham- Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem
Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem in Nottingham is one of the 20 public houses (including Ye Olde Salutation Inn and The Bell Inn also in Nottingham, and Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans (acclaimed in the Guinness Book of Records)) which claim to be the oldest drinking establishment in England. Its painted sign states that it was established in 1189 AD. However, there is no documentation to verify this date, and the main building, built on the foundations of earlier constructions, is about three hundred years old.
The Trip (as it is known locally) is at the foot of Castle Rock in Nottingham's City Centre. According to local legend it takes its name from the 12th Century Crusades to the Holy Land: legend has it that knights who answered the calls of Richard I to join the crusades stopped off at this watering hole for a pint on their way to Jerusalem. It is even claimed that Richard himself frequented the pub although this is probably merely legend as the king spent little time in the country. However, the word trip in the pub's name does not mean an entire journey; it derives from an older meaning of the word: a stop during a journey (i.e. break in the journey to the Holy Land). Others say that the pub takes its name from a religious group called the Philadelphians who used to meet in Brewhouse Yard (but this does not fully explain the name).

Will J visits the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham and plays Ring a Bull.
Ring a bull is a traditional pub game. It involves swinging a bull's nose-ring, which is attached to a string, in an arc so as to hook it onto a bull's nose and hook. The Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is England's oldest pub and here you will find a vibrant community still playing this historic pub game.
Trip to Jerusalem Public House, Nottingham
Video of this splendid pub, though now sadly owned by Greene King. Yet more GK IPA and Abbot now doubt. I won't go in GK pubs, following their acquisition of pubs in Barnstable and the disappearance of all local beer (I can remember the landlord of one pub proudly showing me his Abbot Ale pump and expecting me to be impressed). Fortunately the local Wetherspoons in Nottingham keep a good range of local beer, so go there (cheaper too).
