Yehliu (Chinese: 野柳; pinyin: Yěliǔ) is a cape on the north coast of Taiwan in the town of Wanli between Taipei and Keelung.
Geological forces at work on Datun Mountain gave rise to the area as the mountain was pushed up from the depths below. With the help of sea erosion and weathering, this area has some very distinctive geological features believed to be 10-25 million years old. As the limestone and calcium carbonate surface is more resistant to erosion, the resulting landscape is fractured and filled with giant rocks, pot holes, and fossils. These rocks make for some breathtaking scenery and certainly worthy of at least a day trip to the cape. Strolling around, one might find themselves wondering whether they just stepped on the set of a sci-fi movie versus a geological park in Taiwan!
A number of rock formations have been given imaginative names based on their shapes. The most well-known is the The Queen's Head (女王頭), an iconic image in Taiwan and an unofficial emblem for the town of Wanli. Other formations include The Fairy Shoe, The Bee Hive, The Ginger Rocks and The Sea Candles.

A great spot for paragliding is Wanli on the North Coast of Taiwan. The Mustang Paragliding Club offers 5-min. flights from the coastal mountain to the beach of Green Bay. Great fun!

I am standing on a cliff overlooking Green Bay, a scenic stretch of the north coast between the harbor city of Keelung and the highly popular Yehliu Geopark. Strapped to my back is a straggling pack, and a giant billowing canopy spanning four to five meters extends behind me. With nothing else but kneepads, a helmet, and my all-encompassing faith in the instructor I just met who is going to take me on a tandem flight, I'm going to run off that cliff and pray that the winds do not falter.
Paragliding has been a popular outdoor sport in Taiwan for some time now. The coastal mountains behind Green Bay, in New Taipei City’s rural Wanli District, receive plenty of sea wind, making them a perfect point of departure for flying enthusiasts. There are other locations in Taiwan suitable for paragliding as well, also offering great vistas – Puli in central Nantou County, Saijia in southern Pingtung County, the Luye Highland in southeastern Taitung County, and Wai’ao in eastern Yilan County. Wanli, however, perhaps offers the best conditions, with steady winds and marvelous coastal scenery.
With his trademark bandana, Mustang, the owner of Wanli's one and only Mustang Paragliding Club, greets all his visitors with a broad grin and a dry sense of humor. He has been flying here, and offering flights to others, for around thirty years now. After learning to paraglide in Taiwan, he took to the skies in many places around the world, even doing a flight over China's Great Wall on one occasion. He then saw an opportunity, he sheepishly admits, to make money in Taiwan while doing what he loves best, and set up a paragliding club in Wanli, first sharing the launch pad with other outfits, then buying the land it sits on to gain exclusive access.
He couldn’t have chosen a better spot. Wanli is situated less than an hour away from central Taipei by car – a bit longer by public transport (train to Keelung, then bus to Wanli) – and the unobstructed views you get from where the paragliders depart makes the site a tantalizing jumping-off point. Looking out, the azure water of the sea seemingly melds with the sky, beckoning even the most apprehensive to come closer.

A single tandem flight is currently priced at NT$1,600 per person (including an 8GB SD memory card with footage of your flight, during which you hold the camera yourself; the price does not including insurance, but you have the option to buy it before the flight separately if you wish to do so). The club offers flights throughout the year, depending on the weather. Call around 9am on the morning of the day you want to fly to check conditions.

Self-drive from Taipei: Take Freeway 3 to Jijin (基金) Exit; turn left onto Prov. Hwy. 2, heading to Jinshan/Wanli (金山/萬里); turn left onto Jijin 3rd Rd. (基金三路); turn left onto Zhongfu Rd. (中福路) and then immediately onto Zhongliu St. (忠六街); drive uphill through a residential community, following the yellow signs in Chinese for the Mustang Paragliding Club (野馬飛行傘).
By public transport from Taipei: Take a commuter train to Keelung; transfer to buses 789, 790, or 862 at the bus stop near the blue pedestrian overpass to the right of the station, and get off at Wanli Beach bus stop (萬里海水浴場); then call the club to get picked up.

Yehliu itself (Chinese: 野柳; pinyin: Yěliǔ) is a cape on the north coast of Taiwan in the town of Wanli between Taipei and Keelung. The cape is referred to as the Yehliu Promontory and forms part of the Taliao Miocene Formation. It formed when the Datun Mountain (大屯山) was pushed out of the sea; the cape stretches 1,700metres into the ocean.

Yehliu Geopark, on Taiwan’s north coast near Keelung City, has long been one of the top tourist draws on this island. Up to three million visitors a year can’t be wrong; the park’s unique rock formations and unrivaled scenery make it a place well worth visiting. Another part of the Yehliu experience is Yehliu Ocean World, an oceanarium both educational and entertaining.
Taking up a thin spit of land projecting out into the sea in New Taipei’s City’s Wanli District is Yehliu Geopark, a cape formed by geological forces pushing the Datun Mountain Range, which runs east-west along the north coast, up and out of the sea. Today, parts of the narrow 1.7 kilometer-long promontory look as though they're one rough wave away from being taken by the sea, but luckily for visitors the shoreline is holding its ground.
The park is best known for its unique rock formations, most prominent among them the various hoodoo stones that dot the almost alien-looking landscape, jutting out of the sedimentary rock in delicate spires boasting precariously balanced heads upon their thin necks.
The main attraction for most tourists, as evidenced by the invariably long, snaking lineups each day, is the hoodoo stone known as the Queen's Head, supposedly named for its likeness to the ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti or England’s Queen Elizabeth I. According to recent stats, as many as three million tourists visit Yehliu Geopark and the Queen’s Head every year, though since the number of tourists from mainland China has declined recently, there might be fewer visitors these days.
Photographic evidence has shown that over time the beloved monarch's thin, tapered neck has been eroding ever so slowly, stirring up debate as to whether technology should be used to save the “head” or if nature should be allowed to take its course. Some experts say the 4,000-year-old structure could, through exposure to the elements and the cruelties of erosion, topple any time between 2020 and 2025; some go even further, saying that the next strong typhoon or earthquake could take it down.
There are also many other Yehliu Geopark geological features worth having a closer look at, whether you're an amateur rock hound, an aspiring geologist, or just in search of the most peculiar rock formations to use as selfie backgrounds. Among these are mushroom rocks, so named for their low-slung caps potted with indentations made by the acidic secretions of sea creatures that clamped on them in eons past when the stones were under the ocean’s surface. And there are pothole micro-ecosystems, ginger rocks, sea candles, and trilobite fossils well preserved in the bedrock protruding from the sea.

One of the premier destinations in northern Taiwan, Yehliu Geopark( 野柳地質公園) is home to a number of unique geological formations including the iconic Queen's Head (女王頭), and is located along a cape stretching out from the town of Wanli.
The name “Yehliu” was derived from an abbreviation of the Spanish words “Punto Diablos (which means “devil’s cape”).
Besides the Queen's Head, other remarkable formations include Sea Candles (燭台石), Fairy Shoe (仙女鞋), Ginger Rocks, Elephant Rock, Ice Cream Rock, Kissing Rock, and Princess' Head.

The Mataian Wetland Ecological Park Area (花蓮馬太鞍休閒農場) is located at the foot of Masi Mountain in Hualien County's Guangfu Township. The springs of this natural wetland flow unceasingly. It covers a surface area of 12 hectares. The clear, shallow Fudeng River originates from Masi Mountain, where the spring waters converge from under the ground. This river zigzags from south to north through the Mataian Wetland Ecological Park, nourishing the lush life of this area. Changes in the river's water speed and depth have resulted in a greatly varied natural environment. Consequently, the Mataian Wetland Ecological Park can boast of almost 100 kinds of water plants. The variety of birds, frogs, insects and water animals is also astounding. In any of the field drainage ditches of the Mataian Wetland Ecological Park, the remains of fish, shrimps, shellfish, and spiral shells can be found. There is exuberant life everywhere.

It`s really quite astonishing what the nature can put up together.
Yehliu is a cape of about 1,700 meters long formed by Datun Mountain reaching into the sea. When overlooked from above, the place is like a giant turtle submerging into the sea. Thus, it is also called Yehliu Turtle. Because the rock layer of seashore contains sandstone of limestone texture and it is subject to sea erosion, weathering and earth movements, there is particular scenery consisting of sea trenches/holes, candle shaped rocks, and pot shaped rocks.

A distinctive feature of the cape is the hoodoo stones that dot its surface. These shapes can be viewed at the Yehliu Geopark .A number of rock formations have been given imaginative names based on their shapes.
The place is divided into three sections and has rocks like Queen's Head, Fairy's Shoe and Candle.
Queen’s Head, named after its similarity to Queen Elizabeth I, took over 4000 years to form. The length of its neck is 125 cm and has been weathered at a rate of 0.2 to 0.5 cm per year. It is expected to break in the next few years or by the next earthquake. The popularity of the site draws increasing numbers of international tourists.
The second section has rocks like Bean Curd, Dragon Head. The third section has sea-eroded caves, seal shaped rock, etc. The place is suitable for geological study and field research.
In addition, there is a statue of Lin Tien Jane in commemoration of the person's bravery of scarifying own live for saving others. The monument describes in details the touching story.
Yehliu was a key channel of the trade route between mainland China and Keelung harbor. Yet, the waters around the area were torrential and dangerous, and often caused serious shipwrecks. A legend was told that once a turtle elf was making trouble in the sea. A fairly was dispatched by Jade Emperor to tame the turtle elf. The fairy was riding an elephant with a sword in her hand. When she arrived, she yelled at the turtle and said, “What a naughty turtle; how dare you do such evil things and kill so many innocent people. I, bestowed with the power of this holly sword, shall punish you and you shall have no way to escape.” The turtle elf was serious hurt then. After that, whenever the weather changes, people may notice a strand of smoke permeating through the air at Yehliu Cape. And that’s when you’ll hear local people say. “look, the half-dead turtle is making its last breath again”.
There are also many other Yehliu Geopark geological features worth having a closer look at, whether you’re an amateur rock hound, an aspiring geologist, or just in search of the most peculiar rock formations to use as selfie backgrounds. Hoodoo rocks are found all over the world, particularly in high, dry, rocky regions like the North American Badlands and the Colorado Plateau. These formations can stretch anywhere from four-to-five to hundreds of feet tall. They are often composed of soft sedimentary stone capped off with harder, less-eroded rock. But the rocks at Yehliu are a different from most. Not only are they some of the only hoodoos known to form in a seaside environment, but according to a 2000 study of the Yehliu formations published in the journal Western Pacific Earth Sciences, the hoodoos are composed of the same type of rock through and through.

Beitou Thermal Valley or Geothermal Valley（地熱谷) is a volcanic crater filled with steaming natural sulfuric hot spring water. During the Japanese colonial era, the valley was known as one of Taiwan's eight great natural beauties and the magical translucent green colored waters gave rise to one of its pet names, Jade Springs Valley. The mineral composition of the rare green sulfur spring waters can only be found in two locations in the world, here in Beitou and in Akita, Japan.
The temperatures of the waters can reach up to 100°C (212°F), making them unsuitable for bathing. However, the curling steamy mist that rises up from the waters can climb as high as 100 meters into the sky, and depending on the winds, can completely engulf themselves around visitors, making for a spectacular sight. The eery steam is also the reason for the area's other nickname, Hell Valley. Despite being the hottest spring in the area, it is said that the residual heat source is insufficient to sustain another volcanic eruption, so the valley's days may be numbered.

From Keelung Station, Ride a bus no.790 going to Jinshan and drop to Yehliu. 5 to 8 minutes of walking to the entrance of Yehliu Geopark.

13-Layer Remains Site - Remains of Copper Refinery at Jiufen Taiwan
Dubbed as “the 13 Levels”, the old copper refinery is also called “the Sky Palace as it looks like a beautiful abandoned palace far away. The parking lot nearby provide an incredible view. The building has the longest gas pipe in the world, which is 2 kilometers in length and 2 meter in diameter. Due to possible fatal accidents, visitors are not permitted to enter the pipe.
