Yellowstone Art Museum
Yellowstone Art Museum:
You may see a Claude Monet or a Frederic Remington, but the Yellowstone Art Museum's emphasis is on the art of its own time and place. With its emphasis on the art of Montana and the surrounding regions, the Yellowstone Art Museum (YAM) has become one of the country's premier regional art museums. Montana's art reflects the unique characteristics of a particular place, yet the universality of human experience gives it relevance to all. The sparsely populated, sometimes harsh environment has left its mark on the regional creative spirit. Montana's artists are independent, straightforward, and close to the land. The YAM is proud to place the spotlight on visual art in the northern Rockies region, as well as the ideas and influences that have given it distinction.

City Walks: Billings, Montana Virtual 360 Treadmill Walking Tour
We were in spending time in Billings on our way home and decided to spend a couple days exploring. There's so much more to see and do than we expected. Great breweries and restaurants, museums and indoor activities as well as trails and shopping. Tons of fun. I was able to take a morning and do a walk downtown. I think this will be the last of my 360 walking videos. They are just too much work for the results. Hope thats ok and I apologize to those who are using the goggles and vr headsets. Maybe as the technology improves I'll be able to get back to them. Thanks!

Billings is located in the south-central portion of the state and is the seat of Yellowstone County, which had a 2017 population of 158,980. The 2017 Census estimates put the Billings population at 109,642, making it the only city in Montana with over 100,000 people. The city is experiencing rapid growth and a strong economy; it has had and is continuing to have the largest growth of any city in Montana. Parts of the metro area are seeing hyper growth. From 2000 to 2010 Lockwood, an eastern suburb of the city, saw growth of 57.8%, the largest growth rate of any community in Montana. Billings has avoided the economic downturn that affected most of the nation 2008–2012 as well as avoiding the housing bust. With the Bakken oil development in eastern Montana and western North Dakota, the largest oil discovery in U.S. history, as well as the Heath shale oil discovery just north of Billings, the city's growth rate stayed high during the shale oil boom. Although the city is still growing, the rate of increase has diminished markedly with oil price declines in recent years.
Billings was nicknamed the Magic City because of its rapid growth from its founding as a railroad town in March 1882. The city is named for Frederick H. Billings, a former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad. With one of the largest trade areas in the United States, Billings is the trade and distribution center for much of Montana east of the Continental Divide, Northern Wyoming, and western portions of North Dakota and South Dakota. Billings is also the retail destination for much of the same area. With more hotel accommodations than any area within a five-state region, the city hosts a variety of conventions, concerts, sporting events, and other rallies.
Area attractions include Pompey's Pillar, Pictograph Cave, Chief Plenty Coups State Park, Zoo Montana, and Yellowstone Art Museum. Within 100 miles are Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Red Lodge Mountain Resort, and the Beartooth Highway, which links Red Lodge to Yellowstone National Park.
Billings is the largest city in the U.S. state of Montana, and the principal city of the Billings Metropolitan Area with a population of 170,498. It has a trade area of over half a million people.

Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum | Path Through History | WSKG
BEMENT-BILLINGS FARMSTEAD MUSEUM | Tioga County
In 1792, Asa Bement, Jr., a 28-year old blacksmith and Revolutionary War veteran traveled from Massachusetts to claim his new homestead along Owego Creek in Newark Valley. As one of the area's earliest settlers, Bement worked hard to clear the untamed land and build a log home for his family. Over the years the family expanded the farm by enlarging the house, and building a sawmill, gristmill, and blacksmith shop on the property. The farm would become one of the most prosperous in the area, and Asa Bement, his family and their farmstead would play a significant role in the history of Tioga County.
One hundred years later William Billings gained possession of the property and in 1977 his granddaughter deeded the house and property to the Newark Valley Historical Society. The house was opened to the public as the Southern Tier's only living history museum in 1980.
Today the house is furnished much as it was in the early 1800's, and the barn, blacksmith shop, and carriage shed have been lovingly reconstructed. From July through the first week of October, Blacksmiths, homemakers, weavers and woodworkers dressed in period costume demonstrate their skills, providing a glimpse of life as it once was on this historic 19th century farmstead.
Currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and home to Newark Valley's Fall Applefest, the Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum is a must stop on New York's Path Through History.

Backroads of Montana: Episode 29 - Rockets, Peaks & Poets (2008)
Episode #29 of Backroads of Montana hosted by Montana TV & Radio personality, William Marcus.
We will visit the Big Sky Rocketry Association and watch their launch event near Twin Bridges and then explore a geologic curiosity near Sunburst called Jerusalem Peaks. We will also profile Dixon poet Victor Charlo. William Marcus hosts the program from the Range Rider's Museum in Miles City.
This episode lifts off at the spring launch event of the Big Sky Rocketry Association. Backroads follows one of the group’s youngest members, Keenan Cox from Helena, as he tests model rockets he built himself – or in teamwork with his father Allan.
The Backroads crew, always on the lookout for interesting geologic formations, stops at a spot only locals know about between Sweetgrass and Sunburst near the Canadian border. They call the sandstone & limestone outcroppings, shaped by centuries of Montana weather and wind, “Little Jerusalem.”
One of the more strenuous, skilled jobs of the Montana lifestyle is featured during a visit with Glen Johnshoy, a farrier from Missoula.
The program comes to a poetic end in Dixon with the story of Victor and April Charlo, a father and daughter who were brought closer together by two languages – English and Salish. William Marcus hosts the program on-location at the Range Riders Museum in Miles City.
Program Update
Bob Barthelmess, curator of the Range Rider Museum in Miles City died June 21, 2011. He and his wife retired as curators of the Range Riders Museum in April, 2011 and his daughter, Bunny Miller, took over.

Miles City Montana 1883 Panoramic Bird's Eye View Map 6518
Panoramic Maps, also known as Bird's Eye View, aerial view, or perspective maps. These were a popular form of art at the turn of the 20th century depicting a city's key points of interest.
Unlike traditional maps, Panoramic maps often highlighted the commercial aspects of a town, while also clearly showing many local residences.
I've had a lot fun looking up places I've been to on these maps -- and I've gotta say - It's amazing just how much things change -- and also how much things stay the same.

The 1959 Yellowstone Earthquake
At 11:37 p.m. on August 17, 1959, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake rocked Montana’s Yellowstone country. In an instant, an entire mountainside fractured and thundered down onto the sites of unsuspecting campers. The mammoth avalanche generated hurricane-force winds ahead of it that ripped clothing from backs and heaved tidal waves in both directions of the Madison River Canyon. More than two hundred vacationers trapped in the canyon feared the dam upstream would burst. As debris and flooding overwhelmed the river, injured victims frantically searched the darkness for friends and family. Acclaimed historian Larry Morris tells the gripping minute-by-minute saga of the survivors who endured the interminable night, the first responders who risked their lives and the families who waited days and weeks for word of their missing loved ones. (Thursday Night at the Museum—September 29, 2016)
