Yeoor Hills-The Home of Leopards
Yeoor hills is a buffer zone and the other end of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Yeoor hills lies just a few kms from Thane and has a few restaurants. The area is popular for nature lovers for school education trips, nature walks and bird watching.
Yeoor Hills is situated at Thane, It streches from Mulund all the way entire the Ghodbunder Road. It blocks and receive the first rainfall from the monsoon winds.
It is also called Yogi Hills in Mulund and ” Mama Bhanja ” mountain is prominent peak of Yeoor.
Yogi Hills Trek or Yeoor Hills Trek (They are different)
1. If you trek from Mulund then it is Mulund Hills Trek or Yogi Hill Trek or Tulsi Lake Trek.
2. If you want to trek to Yeoor Hills then its through Patvanpada (last stop). There is a private farm there. Instead of going to farm there is a small road which goes straight and there is a gate. Its a Trans Thane Borivali trek. But I guess its stopped due to security reasons. There are guards on the way and they don’t allow. Earlier it was open. If you know some forest officer then you can proceed. Though people enter it. Rules are not strict yet. On the way is Yeoor Waterfalls.
3. Third trek is from the Tikujini Wadi side. You climb that hill and reach a village up the top known as Vanitapada. Many daily morning walkers go till there. Till Vanitapada its very easy route. From there you need to hire the local people if you want to further continue the trek to Mundi Peak which is the three headed peak seen from the top on other side. Not many people go there as the forest is too dense.
4. Mama Bhanja Trek is a trek which have steps all the way till top. Height of Mama mountain is 400 meters and Bhanja mountain is 360 meters. It is accessible from Lokmanya Nagar.
5. One can also visit Pachwad Waterfall in Yeoor Hills
Leopards stroll in these hills during night. Earlier around 50 leopards used to live but now around 6 occupy. It is a small mountain not of much height but is very wide which stretch long and goes inside deep till it reaches the other side i:e Borivli. One can trek in this route. Also there are small waterfalls inside these hills and a nulla called Bhendi Nulla which flows in brim during monsoon. Yeoor comprise of small villages namely, Patvanapada, Vanitapada, Narlepada, Bendipada, Ronchapada.
Entry Fee: 53 rs per Adult
There are yearly pass for morning walkers and those who want to visit will have to pay entry fee. You can also enter from the Mulund side as there are multiple ways to enter the hills. Being a forest best time to visit is during the monsoon as it is wet and humid while during summer every thing is dry and tan in color. Pagodas built after certain interval for resting. Recently encroachments by builders has increased which are building houses too close to these hills. Houses in Yeoor Hills are built be small thin woods cemented together with layers of wet mud which then dries off. There are small villages up the hills where the adivasis (varli) or the local people live in. They have small patches of land where they cultivate their crops. Most of the village people who come for work in city have to walk up and down the hill, though the height of the hill is not big but still it will be tiring.
VVI : Encountered a leopard – What to do ???
1. If you are in a group, flap your arms like birds, jump high and make loud noises to scare leopard away. If you are in a group leopard will avoid attacking.
RECOMMENDED – ALWAYS TRAVEL IN A GROUP
2. Never stare at him directly, its like a challenge for them. Act as if you are ignoring. Also don’t turn back at him. As soon as you see any signs of leopard or himself just back down and leave the area as soon as possible. Don’t try to venture.
3. If alone, try to do same as above. But You are in a dangerous situation if you are alone. Never travel alone in such areas.
4. Fighting back is the last option, if he pounces. Try to keep his mouth away from your self. Try to scare him away as far as possible.
LEOPARDS ARE GOOD RUNNERS, SWIMMERS, CLIMBERS – You only have an option to scare him.
Remember – You have NO RIGHTS TO KILL A LEOPARD as an act of defense because you are in his territory.
...........Good Luck

Research shows, that many educators, have expressed a knowledge gap, in not only what to teach young children about sustainability, but also in how to teaching about it.
Most children are unaware, of the role they play in the society.
From a young age, children must be taught and guided, about the opportunities they have, to help out the Earth, in their own small ways. With the right guidance, they can learn by doing the right things for a sustainable planet.
Teaching them, about how their actions impact the environment, and the society, will help create awareness of their actions, and the consequences of their choices.
If we have to save our natural resources, for the future generation, sustainability has to be embedded, in all daily routines and practices.
It is said, seeing is believing. Educators, need to discuss with children, that all living things are interconnected, this should be followed by action. Learning by doing, is what makes the sustainability, sustainable.
On 13 September 2015, at Yeoor Hills in Thane, Mumbai team of Earth5R including Sagar Kulkarni, Manish Jha, Anmol Hembrom, Kaksha Mahudkar, Akshitaa Shah, Tanya Martins, Ajeet Singh, Meena, and Nikita Shrawagi set out for a cleanup drive. The impact was enlarged, with an integrated Earth Talk, for a huge group of 622 young listeners. The cleanup began, from the foot of the hills, and went up all the way till the Air Force station, the stretch of road, which is used by many, and littered the most.
The cleanup drive was met with, enthusiastic participation from people. Some helped in the cleanup, some took photos, and some of the inquisitive ones even inquired about the clean up drive. Few passing by children shouted on Earth5R Team, We salute you, which was a motivational boost for the team.
After the cleanup, an Earth Talk session was done for a mass of 622 people, who had come for an adventure trail. The group comprised of 552 students and 70 instructors from 14 schools in Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
During the Earth Talk, it was noticed that, the children paid careful attention, to everything that the team said, and showed enthusiastic participation. This was primarily because, the children were witness to the cleanup activity, while they were trekking up the hills. In compliment with the mission statement of Earth5R , which is Know, Act, Inspire, people indeed went back with an inspiration, and determination to clean up in order to green up!
A very inspirational work delivered, Mumbai team of Earth5R.
