Yeoval - Discover the Riches
Yeoval
Experience the artistic country culture and rural landscape of Yeoval on the doorstep of adventure in the Goobang National Park.
Famous Australian storyteller and poet, A.B “Banjo” Paterson, spent the first seven years of his life growing up on the family property ‘Buckinbah’ on the edge of Yeoval. His piece “First Impressions” tells of his memories growing up in the area.
Yeoval has embraced the poet’s connection to the area developing the Banjo Paterson Bush Park lined with works of art. The Poet’s Walk features carved slate seats and clay tile walls and a bike track.
The Bush Park also features one of the largest public artworks in Australia – a bronze abstract sculpture of English Sculptor, Henry Moore, weighing in at six tonnes and six metres high.
The town hosts the Mulga Bill Festival – a three-day event celebrating the life of Banjo and his well-known tale of ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle’. This includes an iconic bike ride from Cumnock to Yeoval.
Yeoval is situated on the doorstep of the Goobang National Park which is popular for camping and walking. The town has a Historical Museum and some nice examples of old buildings with character including a country style pub and the old Trading Post building.

Eugowra - Discover the Riches
Eugowra
Discover the vibrant energy of Eugowra’s dramatic natural landscape, rich resources, bushranger history and eclectic events.
Located in the Lachlan River Basin, Eugowra is a picturesque town nestled along the Mandagery Creek.
Eugowra is located in the heart of bushranger country and is most famous for Australia’s biggest gold robbery. Frank Gardiner’s gang held up the Ford & Co coach from Forbes to Orange at Escort Rock (approximately 4.5kms north of the township).
The bushrangers stole 14,000 pounds Sterling worth of gold and cash. Only a portion was ever recovered which resulted in the development of a strong folk law surrounding the missing loot.
The unique history and flavour of the town have been immortalised in murals throughout the town and the Historical Museum and Bushranger Centre.
The town is rich in community involvement and energy. Eugowra boasts a number of highly successful events including the Spring Racing Carnival and Canola Cup.
Eugowra is a great base for exploring the natural wonders of the area including Nangar National Park, Back Yamma State Forest, the Mandagery Creek and the Lachlan River.
The town’s uniquely imposing large granite boulders were used for the construction of the new Parliament House and were supplied by the local Granite Mill. The town is well known for cattle, timber, feed and hay production.
The town is home to a number of talented professionals. It is serviced by a new well-appointed hospital with aged care accommodation, town pool run by the community, Primary and Catholic schools, day-care/preschool, function venue, traditional country style pub, bowling club, café, supermarket, highly popular butcher, hairdressers and a few well regarded specialty stores. People travel from around the region to access the talents of a number of Eugowra’s retailers.

The Nationals are Ignoring the Drought
How can farmers be expected to survive this drought without the assistance they need?
Right now the National Party is offering Government loans of $20,000 to farmers. For the Haycock family in Yeoval, that would only last them two weeks.
Worse still - if they lose their stock or don't have them years later, they still have to repay the loan, plus the interest.
The Nationals are failing farmers right across New South Wales.
Instead, they're supporting the city Liberal Party's billion dollar plans to build new Sydney stadiums, and shift a museum from one side of Sydney to the other.
It's just not good enough!
RAILWAY MUSEUM HERITAGE TRAIN
The NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere is always worth a visit. I called in recently after a long absence and was delighted to see the care the Museum is taking of the NSW Railway's Heritage Train -- the Royal carriage, the Governor's carriage and the Commissioner's carriage among others -- as a central feature. Years ago, the future of the carriages wasn't quite so assured and more than 30 years ago I did a story about them for Seven News where I was state political reporter. Fortunately, Sir David Martin, one of the State's most popular Governors, was still using the Governor's carriage as you will see here. Thank you to the NSW Rail Museum for taking such good care of these works of railway art and assuring their future. Seeing the Heritage Train is worth a visit to the Museum on its own but there is so much more to see there.

Royal Australian Navy Westland Wessex Helicopter
The Wessex was developed from the Sikorsky S-58 and built under licence by Westland Aircraft Ltd at Yeovil in the United Kingdom for the Royal Navy. The helicopter entered Royal Navy service in 1961 as both an ASW aircraft and as a troop carrier for the Royal Marines. The Royal Air Force also used it as their main transport helicopter for many decades. Besides its ‘dunking sonar’ the Wessex could carry long-range fuels tanks or light-weight torpedoes on external carriers, with flares and marker floats launched via a chute in the rear cabin. A heavy-duty cargo hook could be rigged under the fuselage to lift loads using slings. A power winch for rescue work was mounted above the cabin door. Deployable floats attached to the front wheels would inflate in the event of ditching at sea. It is without doubt one of the big ticket items on display at the Vietnam Veterans Museum , Newhaven, Phillip Island. Our thanks to Keith for showing us over the museums own Wessex, retired after it landed in the soup. More information on this aircraft is available at the Navy web site, link below:

History Here
About
The History Here project is an initiative of The Project Zone and represents a potent collaboration between the Department of Education’s videoconference hub DART Connections, Orange Regional Museum, Mitchell State Library NSW, Orange Historical Society, Eugowra Museum, StarTime Sydney, and various regional government and community service providers.
History Here is coordinated by The Project Zone, whose creative directors Vince Lovecchio and Paul Stafford are inspired by the level of commitment, talent & enthusiasm possessed by the students and their staff.
Why History Here?
When we first went into primary schools in Central West NSW and asked the students what had happened in their area, we got variations of the same answer; “Nothing. Nothing ever happened here.”
It was disturbing but not that surprising. The world is a vast, fast, hyper-connected sphere of information, with almost none of it generated locally. And - let’s be frank here - kids think history is boring. We set out to change that.
What do students learn from the History Here project?
For History Here projects we invite a series of local historians, amateur historians, motivated citizens and enthusiastic busybodies into the classroom to share their stories, memories and historical threads, often handed down from distant ancestors. The students narrow these stories down through a democratic vote until we have five ‘possibles’, and then a final winner.
Project participants then research, using local historical sources (many self-published), Trove, Mitchell State Library Learning Centre and their local Historical Society, before storyboarding & drafting a final filmable script.
The students are guided through the filmmaking process, learn new technical skills while developing research, interview, scripting and performance skills. History Here projects also incorporate a strong STEM element with students learning green screen/virtual reality, alongside a strong cine-literacy and narrative writing component.
But all that pales when you see the real, profound development; these kids learn the significance of where they live, build a sense of community pride and ownership, while developing a genuine sense of self and place.
Now when they’re asked what happened around their area, these same students can rattle off at least five significant historical events or characters, and will answer you quite categorically; “Something really important happened here.”
History Here - Bigger Than Ben Hall
The Bigger Than Ben Hall project involves primary schools across NSW, Queensland and the USA re-telling the exploits of Ben Hall’s gang, one of Australia’s most infamous bushranging outfits, which terrorised the Central West region of NSW in the early wild west days of the colony’s first gold rush.
These incredibly talented young students research, write scripts and make films about the infamous local bushranger gang led by Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall. The students live and go to school in the towns where the gang operated stealing gold and horses.
The latest exciting instalment of History Here - The Bigger Than Ben Hall 2018 project involved primary schools from across Central Western NSW, including Canowindra, Eglinton, Perthville Public Schools, and St Joseph’s School, Eugowra.
A series of historically-themed short films were researched, scripted and acted by students then filmed and edited for a scheduled international broadcast to schools across NSW, San Francisco and Hawaii, USA. The project involved filming at various locations around the Central West, including a number of sites at the rocky range of Eugowra where the actual gold heist took place.
The live broadcast from Canowindra on 19 December will feature a live re-enactment of the gang’s raid on that town, a one man bush band, green-screening pop-ups and a retelling of the gang’s story by eminent bushranger expert and author Craig Lawler.
We are are deeply grateful to the schools and community organisations who gave freely of their time and resources to help make this world-first web-based event possible. A big shout out to all the students – they were awesome.”

Who should own South Africa's land? - BBC News
Twenty five years ago this month South Africa’s leaders agreed an historic constitution that paved the way for the end of white rule.
But despite the end of apartheid, the majority of land remains under white ownership.
South Africa’s ANC government says the solution lies in enforced land redistribution.
The BBC’s Africa Editor Fergal Keane explains.
