Yeovil Railway Centre, August 2019
With a spare couple of days, the week before the Great Dorset Steam Fair, I planned a camping trip into Dorset to visit a number of attractions. My first visit was to the Yeovil Railway Centre, located alongside Yeovil Junction mainline station, the railway centre has a small museum cafe, as well as offering brake van trips along a section of track. On the day of my visit the service was handled by a diesel locomotive, although steam days do take place throughout the year.

Yeovil Railway Centre 20th Anniversary, 01/06/2014
Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June saw the Yeovil Railway Centre Celebrate there 20th Anniversary. The Celebrations featured train rides behind Barclay 0-4-0st 'Lord Fisher' and Fowler 0-4-0 Diesel Shunter 'Cockney Rebel', top and tailing, plus at midday surprise guest DCR Class 56 56303!
As well as train rides there was a WW2 display, vintage tractors, bikes and steam lorries. Cab tours of 56303 (when not running) and 50050 'Fearless' where also on offer, plus a Model Railway Exhibition, with a good selection of layouts and trade stands and the Centre's Miniature Railway was also in action (Layouts and Miniature Railway will feature in a separate video). And to top if all off in the afternoon Black 5 44932 arrived hauling 'The Cathedrals Express' (see previous video)!
This was my first visit the the centre and I must say I was not disappointed! Big thanks to all the friend staff and volunteers there! Well worth a visit! Hope you enjoy!
35018 CLAN LINE AT YEOVIL RAILWAY CENTRE 20th DECEMBER 2018
35028 CLAN LINE worked the Railway Touring Company's Sherborne Christmas Carols excursion from London /Victoria to Sherborne on the 20th December 2018. The video is an insight to the fascinating procedures involved during the turning and servicing of the locomotive (and support coach!) at the Yeovil Railway Centre based at Yeovil Junction. The Ruston shunter DS1174 River Yeo (very similar to the long lost Permanent Way Ruston shunter DS1169 once based there) also played an important role during the afternoons operations.

HST & IET diversionary workings along the Exeter-Honiton-Yeovil route
During late February and early March engineering work took place at Whiteball tunnel thus blockading the Western mainline. So GWR ran their express services both HSTs & IETs on the Southern route via Honiton and Yeovil Junction to Castle Cary. As this is pretty much the last time the remaining 2+8 HSTs are running on the route, I took the unusual choice of filming them along with the newly introduced Class 802 IETs at locations I rarely film on and have a historical significance.
Shots filmed in date order are:

I was travelling through Yeovil Junction - a 'haunt' for steam train people. I could see the smoke coming from a steam engine and hoped that it would emerge as I went past it.
See the result for yourself.

Yeovil is a town and civil parish in south Somerset, England. The town of Yeovil lies within the local district of South Somerset and the Yeovil parliamentary constituency, situated at the southern boundary of Somerset, 130 miles (210 km) from London, 40 miles (64 km) south of Bristol and 30 miles (48 km) from Taunton.
In the 20th century it developed into a centre of the aircraft and defence industries, which made it a target for bombing in the Second World War, with one of the largest employers being Westland Aircraft. Additionally, the Fleet Air Arm has a station RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron), the primary base of the Royal Navy's Westland Wildcat and Westland EH101 helicopters, several miles north of the town and is a major local employer (Ministry of Defence). Several other manufacturing and retail companies also have bases in the town. Plans have been proposed for various regeneration projects in the town.
Yeovil Country Park, which includes Ninesprings, is one of several open spaces in the town. There are a range of educational, cultural and sporting facilities. Religious sites include the 14th-century Church of St John the Baptist. It is on the A30 and A37 roads and has two railway stations on two separate railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line served by Great Western Railway services, whilst Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line served by South Western Railway. There is also a small railway museum.
Yeovil is situated at the southern boundary of Somerset, close to the border with Dorset, 130 miles (209 km) from London, 40 miles (64 km) south of Bristol and 30 miles (48 km) from Taunton. It lies in the centre of the Yeovil Scarplands, a major natural region of England. The suburbs include: Summerlands, Hollands, Houndstone, Preston Plucknett, Penn Mill, New Town, Hendford, Old Town, Forest Hill, Abbey Manor, Great Lyde. Outlying villages include East Coker, West Coker, Hardington, Evershot, Halstock, Stoford, Barwick, Sutton Bingham, Mudford and Yetminster. Other nearby villages include Bradford Abbas, Thornford Corscombe, Montacute (where one will find Montacute House), and Pendomer. The village of Brympton, now almost a suburb of Yeovil, contains the medieval manor of Brympton d'Evercy. Tintinhull is also a village close to Yeovil featuring the National Trust owned Tintinhull House and Gardens.
One of the symbols of Yeovil is Jack the Treacle Eater, a folly consisting of a small archway topped by a turret with a statue on top. This is actually located in the village of Barwick, just to the south of the town. The hamstone Abbey Farm House was built around 1420 by John Stourton II, known as Jenkyn, and the associated Abbey Barn dates from the same period.
Hendford Manor in the centre of the town was built around 1720 and has since been converted into offices. It is a Grade II* listed building. Newton Surmaville is a small park and house which is also known as Newton House. It was built between 1608 and 1612, for Robert Harbin, a Yeovil merchant. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
Yeovil has two theatres; The Octagon, and The Swan, a ten-screen cinema and 18-lane ten-pin bowling alley. Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides local health services. The Yeovil Railway Centre is a small railway museum at Yeovil Junction. It was created in 1993 in response to British Rail's decision to remove the turntable from Yeovil Junction. Approximately 0.25 miles (400 m) of track along the Clifton Maybank spur is used for demonstration trains.
The town has two railway stations on two separate railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line served by Great Western Railway services, whilst Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line served by South Western Railway. Yeovil has bus services provided by First West of England, First Hampshire & Dorset, Nippy Bus, Nordcat , South West Coaches, Stagecoach South West and Damory Coaches along with coach services from National Express, Berry's Coaches and South West Tours.

34046 Braunton being turned and serviced at the Yeovil Railway Centre 03/07/2019
As is regular operating procedure for the Dorset Coast Explorer Railtours, operated by Saphos Trains, the steam locomotive at the helm of the tour detaches at Yeovil on the outward leg. From here, while the tour is worked to Weymouth under diesel power, the steam loco works light to the Yeovil Railway Centre to be turned and serviced, before running light to Weymouth and hauling the return leg of the tour to Bristol Temple Meads.
Ex-SR Rebuilt 'West Country' Class - 34046 Braunton, owned by Icons of Steam, once again provided the motive power for the tour, having also worked last weeks rendition.
The Rebuilt Bulleid Pacific arrived at the Railway Centre mid-morning, staying until 2pm. Upon leaving the Yeovil Railway Centre, Braunton travelled South toward Weymouth, caught by the cameras at Bincombe, in preparation for working the Dorset Coast Explorer on the return leg. As 34046 lifted the Railtour out of Weymouth, the cameras stayed at Bincombe to bear witness to the Bulleid striding up the 1 in 50 gradient heading back toward Bristol.
All footage filmed on Wednesday the 3rd of July 2019.
Yeovil, West of England lines in 1956 (Unseen Archive Footage)
In the summer of 1956 British Railways was at what was perhaps its most colourful extent in the last days of steam inasmuch as locomotives and stock were still cleaned and the bright crimson of passenger stock still sparkled in the sun. Few cine enthusiasts had colour film to record the scene but here we have the first of a number of colourful clips taken then, these being a Hall departing from Yeovil Pen Mill, an M7 at Yeovil Town and a clean plain black Small Prairie running into the latter from the former with one Syphon and a Blood & Custard brake 3rd. Glorious days indeed!

Yeovil Railway Centre Model Railway Show 27th & 28th April 2019 (4K)
This is my my first visit to the Yeovil Junction annual Model Railway Show which was held on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April 2019.It was also my first time shooting a complete video with a new piece of kit a Sony FDR-AX53 Camcorder. The whole video was recorded in 4K before being uploaded to YouTube. The show was excellent well worth a visit, there was plenty to see and do. You could also have a ride in the GWR Toad brake van which was pushed along by a Fowler 0-4-0 diesel named Cockney Rebel, all this for £4, a real bargain.
Here is a list of the layouts that are included in the video, sorry if I have missed anyone and i also did not get the name of one or two.
Bryn Coed, Avon Halt, The Junction, Beer Quarry, The Yeovil Railway Club Layout, St Michaels and Southgate New. There was also a great collection of model traction engines displayed by Pam Tilley. Turleigh Models brought along their Trade Stand, a collection of railway items and road vehicles.

6233 DUCHESS OF SUTHERLAND - YEOVIL RAILWAY CENTRE 17/12/2019
The Steam Dreams excursion of the 17th December 2019 to Salisbury and Sherborne (for the option of the Carol Service at the abbey) was originally intended to be hauled by Thompson Class B1 4-6-0, 61306 “MAYFLOWER”. However owing to this locomotive being not fit to run on the day a very late substitution was made in the form of Stanier “Coronation” Class Pacific, LMS 6233 “DUCHESS OF SUTHERLAND”. This video was shot entirely at the Yeovil Railway Centre, based at Yeovil Junction and includes the arrival, turning, servicing and departure plus all the fun that this entails (including the Ruston 0-4-0 diesel mechanical shunter, DS1174 “RIVER YEO”). The special train arrived somewhat late at sundown and other factors such as fog provided for some strange and wonderful lighting effects both natural and artificial on what turned out to be a cold evening. Many thanks to all the staff at the centre and also to the friendly Steam Dreams train crew. I’ll be back for another all day bacon roll soon!
