Historic Grange-over-Sands (1of2) - Tiny Stone Building
Here we have a little stone building at the side of the road in Grange Over Sands.
It looks like it probably an early 19th century lime Kiln.

Grange-over-Sands is a town and civil parish on Morecambe Bay – with a wide tidal range, hence the sands name – roughly midway between Barrow-in-Furness and Kendal in Cumbria, England. Grange-over-Sands was created as an urban district in 1894 and lies historically within Lancashire. In 1974 Cumbria was created under Local Government re-organisation which absorbed the area referred to as Lancashire North of the Sands or North Lonsdale. Grange is now in South Lakeland District. The town remains part of the County Palatine of Lancashire and is part of the Duchy of Lancaster.
Grange-over-Sands developed in the Victorian era from a small fishing village, and the arrival of the railway made it a popular seaside resort on the north side of Morecambe Bay, across the sands from Morecambe. The 'over-Sands' suffix was added in the late 19th or early 20th century by the local vicar, who was fed up with his post going to Grange in Borrowdale near Keswick.
The clean, sea air was believed to be of benefit to tuberculosis sufferers, and in 1891 one of the first sanatoriums in the country was established at Meathop. Not only was the air believed to have a therapeutic effect but also the local spring water. There is one primary school, Grange-over-Sands Church of England Primary School. There is no secondary school, so most pupils attend the school in Cartmel or Milnthorpe . There is also a small nursery school.
Adjacent to Grange are Lindale, to the north-east, Cartmel to the north-west, with its priory to which the village was once the 'grange' or farm, and Allithwaite to the west. The country house Holker Hall, which was built on land which once belonged to the priory, is nearby. Until its move to Backbarrow in 2010, the stables at Holker Hall housed the Lakeland Motor Museum.
Grange-over-Sands railway station, which serves the town, was opened by the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway on 1 September 1857 and is now served by the Furness Line, giving connections to Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness to the west, and Lancaster, Preston and Manchester (and its airport) to the east.
The main road access is the A590, which runs between the M6 and Barrow-in-Furness. Before the building of the railway, the main way of reaching Grange was the road across the Sands of Morecambe Bay from Hest Bank.

The 'Lido' Grange over Sands. Then and Now
The below information was obtained from weebly.com
In the 1930's there was a nationwide health movement, which led to the construction of over 180 new open air swimming pools, with Lidos being built all around the coast. The word ‘lido’ derives from the Latin litus and originates from a resort in Italy. It initially became associated in English with beach resorts in Europe but was gradually used to describe out-door pools.
A Lido for Grange was first discussed in the 1920's when the Urban District Council had proposals to build one below Bay Villa (where Main Street car park now is) - but the then owner did not sell the land, so the proposal was shelved. In 1929 another proposed pool was costed up (around £12,000), which would have been built near the bottom of Bailey Lane on the foreshore.
The current site was finally decided on - mainly because there was also the ability to build a car park and bridge over the railway, which meant that access to the pool would not be a problem. The Berners level crossing also meant that construction and maintenance traffic had good access.
Construction took a year or so (after the tide and rain delayed matters), costing around £18,000, and the pool was formally opened on 18 August 1932 by Lord Derby (although it had actually been open and in use for around 6 weeks by then!). LMS even ran special trains from Morecambe (and possibly elsewhere) to the event.
The Lido was filled with sea water through a filtration system, and was unheated. It was immediately popular with locals, tourists and schools. On August Bank Holiday in 1932 over 6,000 people visited in one day, with around 60,000 a year. It continued to be popular, and in 1968, over 47,000 swimmers went to the Lido. There were numerous Beauty contests and swimming competitions.
By the 1980's problems started to appear with falling numbers, structural issues and maintenance difficulties, partly because of damage sustained in 1977 when storms flooded the machinery and buildings. This led to closure in 1993. Since then there have been numerous ideas and proposals to redevelop or re-open the Lido - but as yet they have come to nothing.
The Lido was listed Grade II in 2011.
Facts and Figures
The Lido was 165' long, and 11'2 wide (1,615 square yards) - with depths ranging from 1'6 to 10' under the diving boards. It also had water chutes and a water polo area. It's capacity was 445,000 gallons of sea water.
It cost £18,000 to build.
Opened in 1932, closed on 1993.

Tidal Bore by Grange Over Sands 21 Feb 2019
Arnside is famous for offering a good viewing location to observe the bore that travels up the River Kent estuary. The bore actually forms way out in Morecambe Bay and travels up many channels, passing close to Grange-Over-Sands as it does so. Viewing the bore from Grange can be disappointing as the elevated marsh in front of the promenade restricts the view, and by the time the bore moves away, you are looking at it from behind, which is not so good.
I filmed this video from Blackstone Point, which is roughly half way along the coast between Arnside and Silverdale. Conveniently, there is a bench to sit on above the rocky prominence. If you want to watch the bore from here you will need a good pair of binoculars.
There are two main channels that converge near Holme Island, as well as other ‘dead’ channels’ that lead off. This made the bore look complicated as it seemed to be travelling in different directions at the same time, as can be seen in the video. The river was swollen after heavy rain during the night. A reasonable bore was produced in the split channels, but it diminished and became undular as it traversed the wider part of the river in front of Blackstone Point. It probably produced a very good bore further down by Arnside. I managed to glimpse the bore traveling up the River Bala and it looked exceptionally good. The bore was also quite good at Sandside.
I was hoping a bore would be produced on the River Winster as it passed the outflow, but alas, there was no sign of one. There is a very short stretch of the river that leads from the estuary up a training channel to the Winster tidal gates. A photo exists online of a bore traveling up this stretch.
Date filmed: 15th June 2018
Expected high tide at Arnside: 10.7m @ 13:27
The bore passed:
- Grange-Over-Sands at 10:45
- Holme Island at 10:50
- River Winster at 10:59

Grange Hotel Grange-over-Sands
The Grange Hotel was built in 1866 in grand Italianate style by the Furness Railway company, who transformed the medieval village of Grange into a select resort for Victorian gentry. The combination of balmy, warm weather, fine houses and delightful gardens made Grange-over-Sands one of the most fashionable resorts of the day. The Grange Hotel has been extensively and tastefully refurbished, complete with marble floors and chandeliers in keeping with its original grand style. Fine terraced gardens overlook the town. Many of the rooms have front-facing Bay views,
