LANTERN FESTIVAL IN CHIANG MAI THAILAND - Yi Peng Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai Thailand was the most incredible thing we have ever experienced! Also called the Yi Peng Lantern Festival, watch as we show you 5,000 sky lanterns float above the Chiang Mai night sky. You have to add this to your Thailand bucket list!
We’re sure you’ve seen it. Whether on Instagram, YouTube, or in the Tangled lantern scene, the Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai Thailand has stolen the hearts of travelers worldwide. That was certainly the case for us! Formally known as the Yi Peng Lantern Festival, it takes place in November on the full moon in Northern Thailand, specifically in Chiang Mai. We essentially planned our entire trip to Southeast Asia surrounding the lantern festival, making sure we would be in Chiang Mai to witness this famous lanternfest.
**Buy your tickets to the Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai Thailand here:
Yi Peng, sometimes spelled Yee Peng, is held during the same time as the Loy Krathong festival, however they are two separate Thailand holiday’s. Loy Krathong is the river floating lantern festival and Yi Peng is the sky lantern festival. This mass lantern release in particular was held at the Cowboy Army Riding Club. We were able to enjoy traditional Thai food, a Thai dance, Buddhist Monk ceremony, and release our sky lanterns along with 5,000 others into the night sky. To be honest, we got a little emotional… and if you’ve ever attended, you can understand why. The Yi Peng Lantern Festival is considered one of the best of Thailand celebrations, and for good reason. The floating lantern festival premise is gaining popularity and new events are popping up worldwide. But, if you want to experience the original mass lantern release, then you absolutely must purchase your tickets to the lantern festival in Chiang Mai Thailand!
**Read our entire Yi Peng Lantern Festival guide & blog article here:
Although this was a paid event, there is a wonderful free Yi Peng sky lantern festival celebration held throughout the city of Chiang Mai Thailand. Although the free event is wonderful, don’t expect to see this many lanterns concentrated in one place. To get this experience, you must purchase tickets to any of the Yi Peng events for the lantern festival in Chiang Mai.

The REAL Thai Lantern Festival | Authentic Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai, Thailand (Part 1)
Everyone has seen the beautiful Lantern Festival (Yee Peng) celebrated in Chiang Mai, but little know the fact that it is actually a Chinese festival. On the same night, the Thai festival of Loy Krathong is celebrated, so we decided to celebrate the local way. We made Krathongs with kids at a school where our friend Paddy works to release in the river, but first we stumbled upon the most beautiful monk ceremony we've ever seen!

Floating Lanterns Festival - Yi Peng / Loy Krathong - Chiang Mai, Thailand
This Sky Lantern festival occurred on November 20th, 2010 just north of Chiang Mai, Thailand at Mae Jo University. Flying lanterns sure are beautiful and amazing!
WHAT IS LOY KRATHONG FESTIVAL - Chiang Mai Floating Lantern Festival Thailand
The Loy Krathong Festival in Chiang Mai Thailand is a floating lantern festival that happens on the full moon in November of each year. Although the floating lantern festival is celebrated throughout Thailand, the biggest lantern celebration happens in Chiang Mai Thailand. Happy ลอยกระทง!
If your’e wondering what is Loy Krathong, your’e not alone! It is a popular Thailand celebration that happens across the country on the full moon in November. The Loy Krathong Festival (also spelled Lai Krathong) happens during the same time as the Yi Peng Festival (also spelled Yee Peng) however they are not the same. Many people call this three day holiday in Thailand the Thailand Lantern Festival, but these celebrations are two completely separate festivals.
Loy Krathong is a floating lantern festival that happens for three full days on the full moon of the 12th month in the Thai Lunar Calendar. Loy means “to float” and Krathong means “basket”. So, during Loy Krathong locals and tourists purchase a floating lantern made out of bamboo, banana leaves, and flowers to illuminate and send floating down the river. Once you release your Krathong down the river, it is said that all of your sins from the previous year will be washed away.
The Loy Krathong festival is NOT a sky lantern festival. The sky lantern festival is called Yi Peng, Yee Peng, or ยี่เป็ง and is only celebrated in Chiang Mai, Thailand. If your’e interested in seeing the Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai, we will show that to you guys in the next video. We’ll warn you now, it’s epic! Make sure you’re subscribed to see the the most incredible Thailand lantern festival.
We had an amazing time during the Chiang Mai floating lantern festival and were honored to take part in one of the most popular events in Thailand. Although we missed Songrakon in Bangkok which is the biggest festival in Thailand by just 3 days, we were so thankful we got to cross this off our travel bucket list.

We have lived in Thailand for 4 months and are sharing helpful information on how to travel Thailand comfortably. We’re happy you found this video and we can’t wait to share more footage of the Chiang Mai floating lantern festival in the next video! Until next time, sea!

Beautiful Lantern Festival - Yi Peng - Thailand Holiday - Chiang Mai
Lantern Festival before Loy Krathong. Yee Peng Festival in Chiang Mai (sometimes written as 'Yi Peng') is celebrated on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month ever year, which normally means mid-way through November, but this can vary.
In Chiang Mai, the ancient capital of the former Lanna Kingdom, Loi Krathong coincides with the Lanna (northern Thai) festival known as 'Yi Peng' where a multitude of Lanna-style sky lanterns adorned with good luck wishes and prayer are released into the sky.

Thailand Lantern Festival 2020 | Loy Krathong & Yi Peng Lantern Festival 2020
Thailand Lantern Festival 2019 Loy Krathong Yi Peng.
In 2019, Loy Krathong falls on Wednesday, November 13 (festival begins on November 11, ends on November 13). It is a light festival (or known as Thailand Lantern Festival) in Thailand on the full moon day in November. The festival is celebrated nationwide by releasing lotus shaped baskets, decorated with candles and flowers onto the rivers. Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and Bangkok are the best places to celebrate the festival while visiting the country. Planning your trip to Thailand well will have more fun!
Yi Peng, another light festival, is celebrated on the same day alongside Loy Krathong in Northern Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai. It is different in that lights are placed into sky lanterns. Swarms of sky lanterns, decorated with good luck wishes and prayers are released to the sky. Yi Peng usually starts 2 days earlier than Loy Krathong. In 2019, Yi Peng Festival will possibly be observed on November 11 in Maejo location (estimation, not confirmed yet until late August, 2019).

Thailand Loy Krathong Lantern Festival Story And How People Celebrate It
Loy Krathong, Thailand's floating lantern festival, is an amazing festival of which the celebration includes a ritual where floating lanterns with lit candles are released on rivers and lakes across Thailand. In Chiang Mai, Loy Krathong takes place on the same day as Yi Peng Festival where flying lanterns are released into the sky. These two events attract millions of travelers every year.
Loy Krathong festival takes place on the night of the 12th full moon of the Thai lunar calendar, which usually falls in mid-November. In 2019, Loy Krathong Festival will take place on November 11th.

All You Need to Know About Thailand’s Loy Krathong Festival:
2019 Chiang Mai Yi Peng Festival Ticket:
The word “Loy” in Thai means “to float” and a “Krathong” is a lotus-shaped boat made from banana tree leaves and bark. So in Thai, Loy Krathong Festival literally means “to float a lotus-shaped boat”.
So how did Loy krathong begin? A popular story about the holiday goes like this:
In the ancient Sukhothai kingdom around the year 800, King Ram Kamphaeng took an extravagant cruise on the river to celebrate the full moon of the 12th lunar month.
During the cruise, the King’s favorite mistress, Nophamas, created the first krathong which was an eye-catching lotus-shaped boat made from banana leaves with a small lit candle placed in the center. Nophamas then took the krathong and set it on the water to float away and honor Buddha and the Thai water goddess.
Onlookers were inspired by Nophamas’s actions and decided to follow her lead and create their own krathongs. Soon, the river was full of bouncing lotus lanterns that flickered under the full moon.
The King was very pleased and decreed that the holiday should be celebrated every year in the same way. Thus the tradition of the floating lantern festival——Loy Krathong began.
Today, Loy Krathong is celebrated all across Thailand. The celebration typically includes firework shows, parades, carnival festivities, and releasing delicate hand-made Krathongs.
If you are interested in experiencing Loy krathong Festival in Thailand, then there is nowhere better than Chiang Mai! Chiang Mai is a special place to be during this holiday because the city not only celebrates Loy Krathong but also Yi Peng the sky lantern festival as well!
