In 1909, Kyabje Domo Geshe Rinpoche Ngawang Kalsang, popularly called Lama Domo Geshe Rinpoche, succeeded Sherab Gyatso as head. It was he who commissioned the statue of the Maitreya Buddha, and he remained head until 1952.

Ghoom monastery in Darjeeling
Ghum Monastery or Ghoom Monastery is the popular name of Yiga Choeling Monastery located at Ghum at an elevation of 8,000 feet, 8 km from Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal, India.The monastery follows the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. There is a 15-feet high statue of Maitreya Buddha (Coming Buddha) in the monastery. It contains images of Buddha’s disciples, Chenrezi and Chongapa. It was built in 1875 by Lama Sherab Gyatso and is the largest of the three monasteries in Ghum.
Ghoom Monastery Near Darjeeling India
The Yiga Choeling gompa in Ghoom (near Darjeeling) was established in 1850 and has a beautiful large statue of Maitreya Buddha as well as smaller statues like Tsongkhapa and 1000-armed Chenrezig Avalokiteshvara. The excellent murals include Palden Lhamo, Yamantaka in yabyum and Yama.

Samten Choling Buddhist Monastery is located in Ghoom and is often referred as the Ghoom Monastery. But the old and the original Ghoom Monastery is the Yiga Choeling which is another 1km away tucked at the end of a narrow road.
Samten Choling is located in Ghoom conveniently on the Hill Cart Road some 7km away from the town of Darjeeling. So unless you specifically mention, the cab driver is likely to bring you here saying that this is the Ghoom Monastery. It could be both because the locals say so and also to cleverly save on fuel.
When you go from Darjeeling town towards Ghoom, before you reach the Ghoom station you will see Samten Choling monastery on your right. There is a big gate having a square arch. From the gate you can see the main Monastery building which has a white body and a golden top.
Climb down the few stairs and you will be in and open area or a patio. On one side is the main prayer building. Inside, the main attraction is the huge 26-foot model of Lord Buddha that has been built in recent time in honor of the renowned scholar Lama Anagarika Govinda. His book on Buddhism has received wide scale acclaims.
If you come early in the morning or in the evening during the prayer time, the chanting and the humming sound made by the young lamas and the monks inside creates great spiritual atmosphere. You can be with them as long as you want during the prayers. The monastery has great collections of Buddhist books and Manuscripts. It belongs to the Yellow Hat sect.
