ENO CAFE and YILAN LITERARY MUSEUM (一弄咖啡/宜蘭文學館)
Short video about two places we visited in Yilan City after we came back down from the mountains in the Qilan and Taipingshan areas. Eno Cafe has excellent coffees and the Yilan Literary Museum is a place to drink tea in a Japanese-style setting.

If, on the other hand, sipping artisanal coffee is more your thing, Eno Café, tucked into an alley in the city's south-side university district, is a thoroughly pleasant place to spend an afternoon. Spanning two floors in a renovated old house, the café specializes in serving single-origin coffees from growing regions around the world. Though the menu is extensive, the best thing to do on arrival is to chat with the barista, as new bean varieties (which often don't make it onto the menu) are regularly imported to satisfy its customers' demands for unusual and exciting brews. The coffee is served in an aesthetically varied selection of cups, picked up on the owner's global travels, and servings come with a full glass tumbler on the side, from which you can refill your own glass or pour some out for your friends to sample.

Heading into Yilan City after two days of strenuous walking, the overwhelming temptation is to take it easy and enjoy a leisurely tea or coffee in one of its charming cafés. A refined, cultured ambiance can be found at the Yilan Literary Museum, which despite its name is not in fact a museum but a Japanese-style teahouse, replete with low tables, sliding panel doors, and a tatami-covered floor for sitting.
The building itself, built in 1926, originally served as a residence for the former headmaster of the local agricultural school. But after being designated a historical building and restored to its former glory, in 2011 it was opened as a space where the aspiring literati of Yilan City – which has a tradition of producing some of Taiwan's finest authors – can read, sip fragrant tea, muse, and produce creative work in a peaceful, elegant walled-courtyard setting away from the busy streets and sounds of roaring scooters.
Relaxing on the soft straw tatami and soaking in the literary atmosphere, you can sample a delicious tea of fragrant osmanthus honey dissolved in hot water and a plate of finger snacks consisting of crisp dried broad beans and tangy, dehydrated starfruit.

Things To Do In Yilan County Taiwan
I’ve been planning (or let’s say tempted) to visit Taiwan several times last year, ever since they have lifted visas for Filipinos entering the country. I came close to booking a flight during one of the local airline’s seats sale but unfortunately, things didn’t really work out as planned (dreamed). Good thing, before 2018 came to a close, I got a chance to visit Taiwan, though not the capital, I still got to explore the country’s northeastern town, Yilan County.
Yilan is situated in Taiwan’s Northeastern coastline. Our local guide mentioned that Yilan is regarded as Taiwan’s backyard or backyard garden because it is surrounded by ocean and mountains, making it a nature-destination trip especially if you are coming from a busy city like Taipei.
Join me in this vlog as I tag you along in some of the best spots to see when visiting Yilan.
Here are the places we visited:
3:17 Agrioz Candied Fruit Factory & Museum
5:20 Hill-Top Yilan

Guan Yin & The 108 Lokesvaras - A Special Exhibition in commemoration of Maestro Lin Jian-Cheng
The “108 Lokesvaras” depict 108 forms of Guan Yin and each Lokesvara answers to one of the 108 kinds of misery people suffer from. This is a special exhibition in commemoration of master sculptor Lin Jian-cheng at the Museum of World Religions in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Here at the exhibition, visitors can observe howmanifestationof the 108 Lokesvaras changed as the work spread from Nepal to Japan and then to Taiwan, and variations on the expression of compassion.
Museum of World Religions Foundation CEO, Shih Liao Yi said that Ling Jiou Mountain's Wu Sheng Monastery was founded by Master Hsin Tao 35 years ago. He founded this Buddhist society with compassion and chan as the central themes, reflecting his religious mission. Great vow and compassion is what Guan Yin stands for. One very important legacy of this exhibition is the 108 Lokesvaras. They represent the actualizations of Master Hsin Tao's efforts to promote world peace.
Another actualization is Dharma Master Hsin Tao's founding of the Museum of World Religions, a place whose mission is to foster respect among peoples and religions, and one way to do so is by introducing to visitors culture, literature, music, rituals and architectural designs from around the world, in hopes that with greater learning and cultural experiences, steps can be made toward world people.
Museum of World Religions Director Chen Kuo-ning expressed that many people feel that religion is about criticizing other religions. But for the Museum of World Religions, we're not about competing, we work with each other. Children that we've invited to visit have said, “this is a museum of the heart.”
Ling Jiu Mountain Buddhist Society and the Museum of World Religions invited artist Kun San Che Pei Lama and sculptor Lin Jian-cheng to recreate 108 Lokesvaras in thangka and painted red copper sculptures respectively in a globally unique effort to showcase classical Buddhist art in a new light.
Museum of World Religions Director Chen Kuo-ning; when he finished the very last sculpture, Maestro Lin suffered a heart attack and passed away. It was like he had finished his life's mission.
Museum of World Religions Foundation CEO Shih Liao Yi; Maestro Lin's work truly touched our heart, so we hoped that with his two hands and the power of faith, he can create something shows the compassion of Guan Yin for ages to come.
In addition to wax and Buddhist sculptures, Maestro Lin's works also include a bronze sculpture of Taiwanese modern dancer Lo Man-fei, and sculptures of the cute variety adapted from the work of illustrator Jimmy Liao.
Jimmy Liao said people might have seen some of my work adapted into public installations, especially the ones in Yilan, and some later work as well. Actually, those were led by Maestro Lin and his team. I'm really happy and proud to have had the opportunity to learn from him during those last two years. After studying sculpture from him, I noticed that my style and the subjects I chose took on a deeper meaning.
Breaking from traditional methods of display, this exhibition includes interactive digital multimedia that provides visitors a spiritual experience that seems to cross through time and space. Visitors can stand in front of a screen to see which of the 108 Lokesvaras is chosen to appear to them. There is another installation that takes a 3D picture of the visitor, then recreates the person’s form as the sand that then disperses, becoming a part of the Ganges River.
Over a hundred people attended the exhibition's opening ceremony, including leaders from Buddhism, art, and academia. Memorable musical performances were given by a group that transversed classical and popular realms.
The 108 Lokesvaras and Lin Jian-chengartexhibition runs from July 28 to September 30th, 2018. Ling Jiu Mountain Buddhist Society will host a Guan Yin Colloquium September 28th to 29th and will hold the official opening ceremony of the 108 Lovesvaras on September 30th.
Guan Yin to Buddhists is a symbol of compassion and peace. Ling Jiou Mountain Buddhist Society welcomes everyone, no matter their faith, to visit, to get to know Guan Yin and to achieve harmony life .

Taiwan News Briefs
Exhibiting Banned BooksTaichung’s Civil Affairs Bureau kicked off a special exhibition at the Taichung Literature Museum to showcase written works that were banned during Taiwan’s martial law period. The layout of the exhibition was purposefully designed to resemble a prison to give visitors a taste of the oppressive conditions that free-thinkers of the time had to live through. The exhibit will run through April 16. Yilan Green ExpoThe 18th annual Yilan Green Expo is set to kick off on April 1 at the Dongshan River Ecoark, where visitors will be able to explore 30 hectares of open grasslands and learn how to make healthy foods. Expo organizers will also provide attendees the chance to row boats through the park and take in the region’s beautiful landscapes.Rare Birds in TaitungSwarms of birdwatchers have been flocking to Taitung to catch a glimpse of the “slender-billed gull,” a rarely seen migratory bird which has appeared at the mouth of the Taiping River. The gulls, which are slightly pink in color, are estimated to have flown 4,500 kilometers to get to Taiwan, presenting a special chance for photographers to capture the elegant bird on film.

Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth designed by Tadao Ando
The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (widely known as The Modern) was designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, and was opened to the public in December 2002. The building features five long, pavilions set into a reflecting pond. The Modern is located in the city's Cultural District.
Tadao Ando (安藤 忠雄, born in Osaka, Japan in 1941) is a Japanese architect whose approach to architecture was categorized by Francesco Dal Co as critical regionalism. Ando has led a storied life, working as a truck driver and boxer prior to settling on the profession of architecture, despite never having taken formal training in the field. He visited buildings designed by renowned architects like Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Kahn before returning to Osaka in 1968 and established his own design studio, Tadao Ando Architect and Associates. He works primarily in exposed cast-in-place concrete and is renowned for an exemplary craftsmanship which invokes a Japanese sense of materiality, junction and spatial narrative through the pared aesthetics of international modernism. - Wikipedia
