Documentary about Yichang sizhu 宜昌丝竹 music from Hubei province, central China
Documentary from Chinese television about Yichang sizhu (宜昌丝竹), a genre of instrumental ensemble music from Yiling District (夷陵区), Yichang (宜昌市), western Hubei province, central China.
Probably filmed in 2007.
The term sizhu (丝竹, literally silk and bamboo) refers to the use, since ancient times, of instruments with silk strings in combination with wind instruments made of bamboo.
Yichang sizhu, a representative form of instrumental folk music in Yichang, Hubei, has a 200-year history, seven generations of musicians, and more than sixty pieces in its repertory.
Yichang sizhu is mainly played at weddings, funerals, and other folk activities. Following the sizhu tradition, the instruments used for Yichang sizhu are mainly strings and woodwinds. It is simple and flexible in form, graceful and fluent in melody, elegant and fresh in style, and has the strong cultural flavor of southern China.
Because Yichang sizhu players are gradually getting old and there are not many young people who want to learn it, the genre is facing extinction. Researching the rules of the genre and the skills necessary to play it are essential in continuing this piece of traditional culture.
In 2006 Yichang sizhu was included in the first installment of 518 traditions inscribed in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录) by China's State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH, 国家文物局), an agency under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture (中华人民共和国文化部) that was formerly known as the State Cultural Relics Bureau (国家文物局文化部).

Petsitting in Yichang, China
There’s one new thing we wanted to try during our travels this year: pet sitting! We had heard about it from other VIPKID teachers and were excited to have a new way to save money while traveling.
With us coming to China, we found our first housesit opportunity in the city of Yichang, Hubei. We also stopped here as a place to rebuild some of our funds back up before continuing our travels for the next weeks without work.
Most of our days were filled with walking Todo (the dog at the housesit) around and working. We did take one day off and went to a nearby place called the Tribe of the Three Gorges where we saw beautiful mountain scenery, a wedding demonstration and monkeys.
We are excited for what adventures await us in the upcoming destinations around China but are also very grateful we had this opportunity with the housesit.

爱上宜昌 ~ ai shang yi chang (in love with yichang)
I spent 2 years and 4 month in China studying the Chinese Language. (The first year and a half of that experience was at Beijing Language and Culture University).
This is a short video based on the Love for Yichang I shared coincidentally with the name of this short film In Love with Yichang
Yichang City, the heart of China, located in Hubei Province, is not only the place of shooting this production, but this was also the place for the Three Gorges University, at which I continued my studies in Chinese, as well as spent 8 months time in.
