Sakura-shi Matsuri: Sunday Night
Sakura City Matsuri 2015
Tulip Festival, Sakura City, Japan 2011
(Also share in CNN iReport) One month after the disaster, life seemed to have returned to normal in many parts of Japan. In the streets of Tokyo, people are going to work and transportation back to normal, though a nuclear emergency is still unfolding at a crippled nuclear plant in Fukushima.
The cherry blossoms has already fallen in the mid of April, now it's time for tulip to take over the job to cheer up the spring season in Japan. In Sakura city, Chiba Prefecture, local residents and visitors were holding the Annual Tulip Festival. This festival is held every year to commemorate the friendship between the Netherlands and Japan. There are more than 140 types of tulips bloom in Sakura Furusato.
As radiation level showing normal in Chiba Prefecture, many people here came and celebrating a picnic in outdoor places. The government of Japan has asked the people of Japan not to do an over jishuku which means do not over self restrain in remembering the victims of tsunami. They asked people of Japan to do things normally and start to boost the economy of Japan.
People who gathered here today believed that many people in the city had recovered from the quake and wanted to move on with life. They said they were convinced that as long as one was still living, there would be hope.
Tulip Festival in Sakura City could be a sign of recovery in Japan. However, despite the celebration, mixed feelings could still be detected in the singing and eating scenes.

Diamond Princess Spring Flowers Cruise - Tsuruga - April 2018
Tsuruga, on the west coast of Japan, was the 2nd Japanese port, and the 3rd port overall, on my Diamond Princess Spring Flowers Cruise in April 2018.
The shore excursion was called “Highlights of Tsuruga”. It consisted of a visit to the Pine Forest, the Shinto Shrine, the Port of Humanity museum, the Red Brick Warehouse, and the Fish Market.
The Port of Humanity museum tells of the consul general from Japan in Lithuania who helped European Jewish refugees in the 1930s escape to Japan on their way to their permanent new homes. The Red Brick Warehouse has a historical diarama with model train showing how life was in the early part of the 1900s, as one of the most “western” cities from Japan. People would come from Europe via the train thru Russia and then a ship to Tsuruga. The last stop of the tour was the Fish Market, where a green tea ice cream cone was enticing to me.
Ishinomaki Kawanokami Project 2019 石巻・川の上プロジェクト
On March 11th 2011, Japan was struck by the most powerful earthquake in its recorded history. Following the earthquake, a tsunami hit the Eastern coast of Tohoku with a resulting 15,897 deaths, 6,157 injured, and 2,533 missing. One of the areas most heavily damaged was Ishinomaki. Kawanomaki, an area within the city, was used as a relocation site for the victims of the disaster. These survivors have struggled immensely in the time since the tsunami occurred, and so a community development project was initiated by Dr. Hideyuki Miura to unite and bring relief to the community. It is called the Ishinomaki Kawanokami Project. In 2019, during the anniversary of the disaster, the first volunteer work camp took place at the site of the Hyappyoukan Community Center. The goal was to clear a space in the surrounding bamboo forest to begin the next phase of the project.

Pershing Hospital CEO Patricia Bianchi read a prepared statement from the family that spent two days
Patricia Bianchi, CEO of Pershing General Hospital, read a prepared statement for the familiy that spent two days stranded in below-zero cold in Nevada.
About 200 people had searched by land and air after the group of six failed to return Sunday from a trip to play in the snow near their hometown of Lovelock, in Nevada's high desert.
Their Jeep had overturned just off a road. A member of the rescue team said the engine would no longer start, but the group stayed in the upside-down vehicle for shelter, burning the spare tire to keep warm.
Rescuers began scouring the Seven Troughs Area wilderness on Sunday night for James Glanton, 34; his girlfriend, Christina McIntee, 25; their two children, Evan and Chloe Glanton; and Shelby Fitzpatrick and Tate McIntee, a niece and nephew of McIntee's. The children range in age from 3 to 10.
The situation grew more dire as overnight temperatures in Lovelock dipped to 16 below zero.
Search volunteer Chris Montes said he and two rescuers with him first spotted children's footprints in the snow Tuesday morning, then followed a set of Jeep tracks until they found the flipped vehicle and the family beside it.

What a planetarium is really for? | Hideo Asada | TEDxAnjo
What do you feel under the shiny starry sky in a planetarium? Hideo Asada, who has been in love with stars since he was a boy, received his astronomy master’s will, “Do you know what a planetarium is really for?” The question inspired his explorer’s spirit and expanded his astronomical education career. So what is his final answer? Now he shares his idea with stars and a total solar eclipse recorded on Dec. 4, 2002, at Ceduna, South Australia.

Fukushima Devil Fish: Katsumata Susumu's Antinuclear Manga
Fukushima Devil Fish: Katsumata Susumu's Antinuclear Manga
Lecture by Ryan Holmberg
Nov. 29, 2017, 4:30 pm
University of Hawaii Manoa Hamilton Library
Lecture hosted by the University of Hawaii Manoa Center for Japanese Studies
In collaboration with the exhibition The Disasters of Peace: Social Discontent in the Manga of Tsuge Tadao and Katsumata Susumu (Honolulu Museum of Art, November 30, 2017 - April 15, 2018)
Critiques of nuclear energy in Japanese manga did not begin with the Fukushima Daiichi meltdowns in 2011. One of the regulars of the legendary alternative manga monthly Garo in the magazine’s heyday of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Susumu Katsumata (1943-2007) has the curious distinction of having risen within the world of political cartooning and literary comics while studying toward a graduate degree in nuclear physics in Tokyo. In the late 70s, he began drawing frequent humor strips about the dangers of nuclear power and stories about the “nuclear gypsies” who maintained Japan’s nuclear plants under oppressive work conditions. This talk will survey Katsumata’s work on the subject of nuclear power, which is the largest, most diverse, and most trenchant such oeuvre in Japanese visual art. It serves as a preview of two upcoming publications: a collection of Katsumata’s manga titled Fukushima Devil Fish (SISJAC and Breakdown Press) and No Nukes for Dinner: How One Japanese Cartoonist and His Country Learned to Distrust the Atom (publisher TBD).
About the exhibition The Disasters of Peace:
Beyond manga’s occasional veneer of endearing innocence, the genre of gekiga (literally, “dramatic pictures”), which began in the mid 1950s and went mainstream in the late 1960s, addressed an adult audience and grappled with ethically complex social issues. Through monthly manga anthologies such as Garo, a faction of avant-garde manga artists with gritty, emotionally expressive styles and resolutely anti-authoritarian tones contributed to a new era of humanitarian concern and social activism.
The Disasters of Peace ironically alludes to The Disasters of War (1810–1820), a suite of prints produced by Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco Goya (1746–1828) in response to the horrific violence that he witnessed during the Peninsular War of 1808–1814. In a similar way, the works of Tsuge Tadao (b. 1941) and Katsumata Susumu (1943–2007) displayed here reveal Japan’s plight during the demilitarized era that followed the Pacific War (1941–1945) and the Allied Occupation (1945–1952). Financial hardship, moral confusion, and the lingering shame of military defeat compelled individuals to behave in questionable ways, while large industries, myopically focused upon economic recovery, indulged in unfair labor practices and overlooked environmental hazards. In Garo and other manga publications, Tsuge and Katsumata drew attention to such crises and encouraged public debate about them. At a time when many Americans are similarly concerned about social equality, the future of our planet, and other serious subjects, may these artists inspire thoughtful conversations among ourselves.
About the manga exhibition series at the Honolulu Museum of Art:
Manga— Japanese graphic novels or comics—play a vital
role in contemporary Japanese culture. Not only do they
enjoy immense popularity (annual sales within Japan have
risen to more than two billion US dollars); internationally,
they have become the centerpiece of the “Cool Japan
Initiative,” the Japanese government’s current campaign to
promote its status as a cultural superpower. Manga’s
popularity partly arises from the medium’s historical
connection with Japanese woodblock prints and paintings
(ukiyo-e), which were produced in Japan throughout the Edo
period (1615–1868). The term manga, in fact, was coined by
the renowned ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–
1849).
Since 2014, in its mission to expand and significantly
enhance its renowned collection of Japanese works on
paper, the museum has acquired several examples of
Japanese manga by artists such as Maruo Suehiro (b. 1956)
and Anno Moyoco (b. 1971). In 2016, the Honolulu Museum
of Art furthermore presented Visions of Gothic Angels:
Japanese Manga by Takaya Miou (August 25, 2016–January
15, 2017), the first in a series of exhibitions that explore the art-historical importance of manga. That series now
continues with The Disasters of Peace: Social Discontent
in the Manga of Tsuge Tadao and Katsumata Susumu.
