Yorkshire Trench & Dugout site, Boezinge, Ieper, Belgium
Tour of the Yorkshire trench and dugout site at Boezinge, near Ieper, Belgium. Discovered in the centre of an industrial estate, this relatively small section of original trench and underground dugout was excavated and preserved by a group of volunteers called the Diggers.
Opened in 2003, the site is difficult to find, small compared to Sanctuary Wood and like the Trenches of Death near Diksmuide, rebuilt using concrete sand bags. However, the effort to find the site is well worth it and even its location, surrounded by warehouses, industrial units and wind turbines, strangely adds to the poignancy: if the Germans had won the war, would all this be here?

The Yorkshire trench and dugout on the Ypres salient recreates and restores a British military installation from World War 1. The video walks through the trench which was faithfully restored in the 1990s. During WW1 Ypres was a major site of the conflict on the Western Front. (No voice audio, music only.)
Tours of WW1 - Yorkshire Trench, Flanders
We're going to be bringing you a number of tours of WW1 trench systems, starting with this one.
This particular trench system was buried and forgotten until the 1990's during some construction work. It was restored and turned into a monument to those brutal days.
Between the start of work in 1992 and 2008, the remains of 205 soldiers of three different nationalities were recovered.
There were many approaches to WW1 trench system architecture, and it is interesting see the different approaches towards hopefully solving the same problem.
We hope you find this series interesting and educational.
