Places to see in ( Hessle - UK )
Places to see in ( Hessle - UK )
Hessle is a town, civil parish and electoral ward in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, five miles west of Kingston upon Hull city centre. Geographically it is part of a larger urban area consisting of the city of Kingston upon Hull, the town of Hessle and a number of other villages but is not part of the city. It is on the north bank of the Humber Estuary where the Humber Bridge crosses.
The centre of Hessle is the Square. There are many shops and a small bus station, which was refitted in 2007. Hessle All Saints' Church is located just off the Square and was designated a Grade I listed building in 1967 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Hessle Town Hall was built in 1897 and is situated at the top of South Lane. Hessle Police Station is next door to the town hall at the top of South Lane and the corner of Ferriby Road.
Hessle is home to the world-famous Humber Bridge, which was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1981. At the time of its opening, the Humber Bridge was the world's longest single span suspension bridge. It links Hessle to the town of Barton-upon-Humber on the opposite side of the river Humber. In July 2017 the bridge was granted Grade I listed status.
In more modern times, it has been a centre for shipbuilding. Before 1897, there was a shipyard building wooden boats, but it was then bought by Henry Scarr who moved there from Beverley, where he had previously been in partnership with his brother Joseph. Scarr produced iron and steel ships until 1932, when the yard was taken over by Richard Dunston. It was the largest shipyard in Hessle, building vessels such as Loch Riddon, a roll-on/roll-off ferry launched in 1986, and one of four built for Caledonian MacBrayne for use in the Hebrides.
The company went into liquidation in 1987 and was bought by Damen Shipyards Group in the same year. Dunston's was closed down in 1994. The location is now used as offices, car sales buildings and a dock for scrap metal and other materials for dispatch to other areas, or to be recycled. Richard Dunston's ship repairs still exists further east along the Humber Estuary, with activity remaining high. Hessle is surrounded by the neighbouring villages of Willerby, Anlaby, Kirk Ella, West Ella, North Ferriby and Swanland. Hessle is surrounded by the neighbouring villages of Willerby, Anlaby, Kirk Ella, West Ella, North Ferriby and Swanland.
Chalk-quarrying was a major industry at Hessle into the 20th century and quarries can still be seen in the west of the town, the largest being the Humber Bridge Country Park, which is a popular tourist attraction. Part of it is known as Little Switzerland (Little Switz or Switzy for short).
The Humber Bridge Country Park Local Nature Reserve was formerly a chalk quarry and was developed as a country park following the construction of the Humber Bridge. It consists of mixed species of woodland, wild flowers, a spring-fed pond and herb-rich grassland. The park can be explored on several well-signed walking routes.
Hessle is twinned with the French town of Bourg-de-Thizy. Transport to and from Hessle is convenient, with good access to main roads such as the A15, A63 and M62 (via the A63). It also has a railway station with hourly services to and from Hull and to destinations such as Doncaster and York. Hessle is at the start of the Yorkshire Wolds Way, a long-distance footpath and designated National Trail, which crosses the Yorkshire Wolds and ends at Filey on the Holderness Coast.
( Hessle - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Hessle . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Hessle - UK

UK - Mardy Monster at Elsecar Heritage Centre, August 2013
OQ Class Peckett 0-6-0 saddle tank 2150 of 1954 spent its working life at the Maerdy Colliery in South Wales, hence its much more recent name, Mardy Monster.
The OQ Class, consisting of only 3 locomotives, formed the most powerful industrial locomotive class built in the UK; its 29527 lb of tractive effort making it equivalent to a BR locomotive of 7F classification.
The locomotive can be seen in steam on most weekends at Elsecar and is here fulfilling footplate experiences on Friday 30th August, 2013.
Please excuse the rather shaky hand held footage, filmed on a family visit to the centre.
Yorkshire Wolds Archaeology Project 2014
Archaeology students from the University of Hull have carried out an archaeological dig on the Yorkshire Wolds in East Yorkshire, over the summer of 2014.
Students discovered a great amount of exciting finds at this Iron Age site including a miniature axe, a bone needle, pottery and – perhaps most exciting – an Arras burial.
Hull and its surroundings is a region of superb archaeological wealth. There are few better regions in Britain to study archaeology. The countryside of Eastern Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire contains a wealth of archaeological remains, and its historic centres, such as Hull and Beverley, provide well preserved evidence for the development of medieval townscapes.
For many students, fieldwork is one of the highlights of their degree, and at Hull we regard field teaching as a vital part of our courses.

African Stories in Hull and East Yorkshire: Kofi Smiles
Interview conducted as part of the 'Contemporary Voices' series by African Stories in Hull and East Yorkshire (visit for more).
Kofi Smiles is the BBC Face of Hull for 2017. He was born at Beverley Westwood and is of Ghanaian heritage.
He talks about how African stories like 'Anansi the Spider' ignited his enduring passion for comic heroes such as Spiderman, which later inspired him to become a writer himself. His new role in the spotlight has parallels with his earlier experiences of being at the centre of attention in Beverley, Withernsea, then Hull.
His hope for next year and beyond is for people to pause, take note and engage with the changes within the city as it continues to transform.

WOW!!!! Jaw-droppingly awesome views, scenery & ruins, Kirkham Priory to Thixendale, Yorkshire Wolds
If jaw-dropping views, incredible scenery, medieval ruins and even a ruined medieval village are your thing, then this 33-mile circular bike ride has to be amongst THE MOST SPECTACULAR of all Yorkshire Wolds cycle rides. With an elevation gain of 2466 there are some hefty climbs but they’re well worth it for the awesome views, believe me – you feel on top of the world!! Also, would you believe this is a WARM, SUNNY SATURDAY in the school summer holidays – yet it’s so quiet! And cycling in the Yorkshire Wolds wouldn’t be complete without freewheeling down the spectacular Water Dale to Thixendale which was almost deserted today.
This cycle ride is #11 in Nick Cotton’s book ‘Cycle Tours North York Moors’ – ‘South from Malton to Kirkham Priory and Thixendale’ - the only change being that I started at Barton-le-Willows and cut out Malton and Norton-on-Derwent by taking a cheeky detour along a bridleway.
MAP: OS Landranger #100 (Malton & Pickering), OS Landranger #106 (Market Weighton).
Starting at Barton-le-Willows, just off the A64 between York and Malton, the anti-clockwise circular bike ride takes the following route: Howsham Hall, Leavening, Water Dale, Thixendale, Fairy Dale, Wharram Percy Medieval Village, Wharram-le-Street, Duggleby, Duggleby Wold, Settrington (doesn’t go into the village), bypassing Norton-on-Derwent, Menethorpe, Kirkham Priory, Crambe and back to Barton-le-Willows. Includes part of the Yorkshire Wolds cycle route.
Be sure to check out my bike ride videos and the other (mainly Yorkshire) cycle ride segments - ideal for use at the gym on an indoor trainer, exercise bike, treadmill, cross trainer, etc! Most are in Yorkshire, but some are in Lancashire, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Derbyshire.
Most of my newest cycle ride videos are (almost) uncut which makes them ideal for following on an indoor trainer or exercise bike on rainy days or in the winter, which is what I use them for - so you get the climbs and all.

Work in progress on 23rd June
After several weeks' absence due to illness and other commitments, our Chair, James, was back on site this weekend and took this video showing just how much has changed on site. The renovation and decoration of the coach continues apace, the preparation of the general grounds has extended as far as the footpath to the pedestrian gate, and then there's the small matter of our first locomotive!
The day's work consisted of continuing decoration inside the coach and cleaning metal surfaces outside; some cosmetic work on the outside of the locomotive; and shovelling road planings to extend the footpath towards the site's pedestrian gate.

RVR Rother Valley Railway Restoring the Missing link 2016 Rother Valley Autumn update Kansesrailway
The Rother Valley Railway (RVR) is a heritage railway project based at Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England. It takes its name from the original name for what later became the Kent and East Sussex Railway, running from Robertsbridge through to Headcorn in Kent, via Tenterden. The project is to replace the ‘missing link’ between Robertsbridge, a station on the Tonbridge to Hastings mainline, and Bodiam on the Kent and East Sussex Railway, a heritage railway which operates from Bodiam to Tenterden. A charity supported by a society of volunteers are attempting to re-establish the railway link. The RVR began by reinstating the first few hundred yards of line eastwards from Robertsbridge, and also a short stretch westwards from Bodiam. In 2010, the latter section was further extended to reach Junction Road. In summer 2011 work began at Robertsbridge to extend further eastwards to Northbridge Street, which entailed the rebuilding of five bridges. By June 2012, this further extension was also completed. In September 2013, a Gala weekend at Robertsbridge marked the progress to date and the start of the next phase - the re-instatement of the section between Northbridge Street and Junction Road, for which statutory permissions are being sought. While the RVR does not yet feature regular passenger trains, the base at Robertsbridge houses a small shop and visitor centre open to the public each Sunday, utilising a building formerly used as the London terminus of the Orient Express. There is also a small collection of historic railway vehicles in various stages of preservation.
