Japanese Fire Festival for Mt. Fuji
At the foot of Mt. Fuji a fire festival is held by the town of Fujiyoshida in the hopes of placating the goddess of the mountain and keep Fuji-san from erupting for one more year.
The festival goes back 500 years but in its origins it stretches back to the fabled Age of Gods period of Japan. The grandson of the sun goddess was sent down to rule and he took to wife the daughter of a mountain goddess. She became pregnant in one night which made her husband suspicious. She took offense to this and built a hut with no door. She told her doubting her husband she would set it on fire and give birth to his children whom being divine would not be harmed. She went inside setting it on fire and proceed to give birth to 3 children who were unharmed thus proving her innocence.
The torches lit at Fujiyoshida symbolize the fire she lit to prove her innocence.

Colorado Springs celebrates 50th anniversary of Sister City relationship with Fujiyoshida, Japan
(Video recorded Jan. 24, 2012)
According to the city's Communications Office:
A Genji Monogatari tapestry given to Colorado Springs by the City of Fujiyoshida will be presented to Mayor Bach and City Council to launch a year of community-wide celebration in honor of the two sister cities. The gift is the start of an ongoing exchange between the City of Fujiyoshida Museum and the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.
On August 4, 2012, the City of Colorado Springs, City of Fujiyoshida, Colorado Springs Diversity Forum, Japan America Society of Southern Colorado, and Colorado Springs Sister City Committee will partner to celebrate 50 years of friendship and collaboration. The celebration will feature a re-creation of the Yoshida (Fire) Himatsuri Festival, considered one of Japan's most unique historical commemorations.
The Fire Celebration, which honors Mt. Fuji, has been held in Fujiyoshida for 600 years. It will take a new form as part of the Everybody Welcome Festival hosted annually by Colorado Springs Diversity Forum. Traditional performances of Taiko drumming, spectacular fire shrines, and other Japanese cultural offerings will enrich the local festival and offer numerous opportunities for community engagement and education.
More information on the August 2012 Fire Festival can be found at CSFireFestival.com.
