Located on the delta of the Abu River facing the Sea of Japan, Hagi is a well preserved historic town, with its samurai heritage and beautiful Hagiyaki Pottery. Visitors interested in Hagi’s rich past are advised to visit Hagi Museum.
Built in 2004, the museum is centered on the concept of “Hagiology.” Hagiology has many sub-themes such as nature, culture, history and so on, as Hagi is rich with all these elements and more. Within the museum, visitors can examine historic artifacts and view the displays. As Hagi is home to many famous characters of Japanese history, such as Yoshida Shoin (a key player in shaping Japan’s future pre-Meiji Restoration), there are also displays about them here as well. And English information is available.
There is a gift shop within the museum with local souvenirs such as summer tangerine. Books about local historic figures as well as Hagi original items are available here. In addition to the gift shop, there is a restaurant within the museum as well. Dishes include local Hagi meat and seafood entrees. Visitors with a sweet tooth may opt for the summer tangerine ice cream which is supposedly served only here.

Japan Trip: Yoshida Shoin Shrine, Pioneer for Meiji Restoration, Hagi Yamaguchi 21 Samurai
Japan Trip: Shoin Shrine, a Pioneer for the Meiji Restoration, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan 21Moopon
Nestled in historic Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is the Shoin Shrine (松陰神社,) dedicated to Yoshida Shoin. A true patriot, Shoin promoted forward thinking and was thought of as a rebel by the shogunate. Being sentenced to death for his part in an assignation plot, his followers believe Shoin sacrificed his life for the good of Japan.
The present shrine building completed in 1955 to remember Shoin is located east of Hagi's former castle town, near from Tokoji Temple. The shrine ground houses the Shokason Juku School, and Shoin’s Former Residence. In Shoin’s Former Residence, visitors can view the small 3 and half tatami mats Shoin was confined to during his house arrest. Likewise, visitors can see the old wooden building of his school which houses portraits of his students, who were pioneers during the Meiji Restoration. It is, though, unfortunate, that entry is not permitted and both buildings can only be viewed from the outside.
Visitors can also visit the Yoshida Shoin History Museum which lies near the entrance of the shrine grounds. The museum display important events in Shoin’s life through displays of life sized figures. Visitors can also find exhibits of his writing and letters in the shrine’s treasure hall (Homotsuden). However neither the museum nor Homotsuden has English explanations available.
The first prime minister of Japan, Ito Hirobumi, was among Shoin’s ex-students. Two of the Former Hirobumi Residences lies about 5 minutes by foot away from the Shoin Shrine. Visitors will have a chance to compare and contrast the difference in Hirobumi’s life before and after he became prime minister.
Access Information:
**By Bus:
From Higashi-Hagi or Hagi Station, take the Maru Bus East Loop line and stop at Shoin Jinja-mae bus stop. The shrine is just a short walk from the bus stop.

Japan Travel: First and Forever Shrine for Yamaguchi Residents, Yamaguchi Daijingu, Yamaguchi, Japan 19 Moopon
Yamaguchi Daijingu (山口大神宮, Yamaguchi Daijingū) is a much smaller and simpler version of the Ise Shrines. It was built in 1518 after the local lord had traveled to Ise and returned home wishing to have a shrine that houses the same deities as those at Ise. Henceforth, the locals who were unable to travel to Ise in person had the opportunity to visit Yamaguchi Daijingu instead, and the shrine became known as the Ise Shrines of the West.
Like the Ise Shrines, Yamaguchi Daijingu consists of an outer and an inner shrine, which are rebuilt every 20 years. Unlike the Ise Shrines, however, the shrines of Yamaguchi Daijingu are located just next to each other. The shrine structures come with a simple, wooden appearance, portraying a purely Japanese architectural style with little influence from mainland Asia. Yamaguchi Daijingu is located within a forest at the outskirts of the city, providing the serene setting for a tranquil visit.
Access:
Yamaguchi Daijingu stands about two kilometers northwest of Yamaguchi Station. It can be reached on foot (30 minutes) or by rental bicycles, which are available outside the station (300 yen for two hours or 700 yen for the whole day).
Alternatively, take a bus from the station bound for Yamaguchi Daigaku (山口大学) or Nakaoguchi (中尾口) and stop at Kenchomae (県庁前) bus stop (6 minutes, 170 yen, 2-3 departures per hour). From the bus stop it takes five minutes to walk to the shrine.
Hours: Always open
Closed: No closing days
Admission: Free

Mito Kodokan
Tokugawa Nariaki and his school – Kodokan.
Rooted in early Edo by Mito Komon and his Dai-Nihonshi, the Mitogaku had its real development and blooming in late Edo. Kodokan, also known as Mito school, was founded by Tokugawa Nariaki in 1841 for the feudal warriors and their children. All numerous sons of Nariaki, including future shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu, attended Kodokan. This school was established for both academic and military trainings, so the students could enjoy various facilities like medical observatory, and astronomical observatory, recourses for horseback riding, and an area for military training. Among the traditional subjects there were Confucianism, history, astronomy, mathematics, and music. Values and traditions, proclaimed by Mito Komon, like respect to peasants, personal integrity, loyalty to the Imperial power, devotion to Shinto and Confucian traditions, commitment to Dai-Nihonshi were taken as samples of perfect virtues worth to admit and develop. The fame of Mito school spread widely all around Japan, and has made great influence on some prominent figures and leaders of that time, like Yoshida Shoin, Saigo Takamori etc.
Yoshida Shoin came to Mito to study in Kodokan, the accumulated knowledge and ideas he later implemented in his own school under Pine trees in Hagi.
The ancient structures of Kodokan can still be enjoyed today, so it is definitely one of the interesting places in Mito recommended to visit.
