Yoshino Mikumari Shrine is a small Shinto shrine situated in the upper Kami Senbon area of Yoshinoyama. This serene shrine is dedicated to Ameno Mikumari, a female deity associated with water, fertility and safe birth, who is believed to bless those who pray to her with fertility. The shrine has several ancient portable shrines (mikoshi) and artifacts on display and is one of four important mikumari shrines in Japan.
The shrine's current main hall was rebuilt in 1604 by Toyotomi Hideyori, Hideyoshi's son, and represents a unique architectural style of the Momoyama Period. The hall's beautiful, layered bark roof was renovated in 2011, and the structure has been registered as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.

Yoshino Hana Eshiki on Mt. Yoshino in Nara!
On April 12th of this year a special matsuri was held on Mount Yoshino in Nara. It is called the Yoshino Hana Eshiki (吉野花会式) procession. The participants are the famous Shugendō (修験道) ascetic mountain monks. They made their way from the Sakuramotobō (櫻本坊) to the Zaōdō hall of the Kimpusen-ji temple for the final climax of this matsuri. A dance by the oni odori (鬼踊) and the burning of a large pile wood and pine branches. After this they trow mochi kubari (餅配り) into the crowd.
A lot of people had come this day to witness the matsuri and enjoy the fine spring weather and cherry blossoms. Walking the small roads and visiting the different temples and shrines was a wonderful experience. The sakura make everything look much more beautiful. I was surprised by the sheer multitude that was there. I have never seen that many people attending a special event as this. There where long waiting lines to either go up or down the mountain.
This is what Wikipedia says: Mount Yoshino (吉野山) is a mountain located in the town of Yoshino in Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, Japan. In 2004, It was designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.
Mt. Yoshino (吉野山) in Nara, is famous for its many thousands of sakura trees. These flowering specimen trees were planted in four groves at different altitudes, in part so that the famed trees would come into bloom at different times of the spring. A 1714 account explained that, on their climb to the top, travellers would be able to enjoy the lower 1,000 cherry trees at the base, the middle 1,000 on the way, the upper 1,000 toward the top, and the 1,000 in the precincts of the inner shrine at the top.

Japan Trip: Ropeway, Sakura, Yoshino Town at Yoshinoyama Shimo Senbo, Nara 49
Mount Yoshino (吉野山) located in Nara Prefecture, is a popular spot for cherry blossom (sakura) viewing. Famous throughout Japan, it is said the trees were planted here on the slopes of Mount Yoshino over 1300 years ago. The mountain is covered with around 30,000 cherry trees of different varieties; thought the Yamazakura version is common.
Yoshinoyama’s slope faces the north. It is divided into four areas:
Shimo Senbon—meaning lower 1000 trees; located at the base of the mountain
Naka Senbon—meaning middle 1000 trees; located in the middle of the mountain
Kami Senbon—meaning upper 1000 trees; located at the top of the mountain
Oku Senbon—meaning inner 1000 trees; located deep within the mountain
Visitors have the opportunity to view the various cherry blossoms as they travel through the mountains as well as experience Yoshino Town with its various temples and shrines.
Visitors will find the Shimo Senbon area of Mount Yoshino at the base of the mountain around Yoshino Station. The lower part of Yoshino town is located here as well. Visitors will find the Yoshino Ropeway station in Shimo Senbon. Many visitors choose to use the Yoshino Ropeway to view the mountain sakura (cherry blossoms). However, due to the popularity of Mount Yoshino’s cherry blossoms, the wait time for the ropeway can be quite long during the cherry blossom season. There are many cherry trees along the mountain trial for those who prefer this healthy, attractive alternative to the ropeway.

Kinpusenji Temple is the leading temple in Yoshino and is the main Shugendo temple of great significance. Shugendo is a religion based on mountain worship that combines tenets of both Buddhism and Shinto. The temple is listed as the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Yoshino, and its main hall, Zao-do Hall with the height of 34 meter, is said to be Japan's second largest wooden structure only behind Nara's Todaiji Temple.
Three, blue skinned statues of Zao Gongen stand inside the Zao-do Hall, the fierce looking deity to protect the sacred mountains of the Yoshino area. Zao Gongen is one of the most important deities in Shugendo, embodying the past, present and future Buddha. The temple's three statues have been standing for 1300 years, measures up to as tall as seven meters and each represent one of these three facets.
Kinpusenji Temple occasionally holds Shugendo workshops, which highlight feats of physical and mental endurance of the elements, such as hanging off cliffs or sitting under waterfalls, which Shugendo teaches to be a path to enlightenment. Also, the pilgrimage trail starts at the temple to the sacred Mount Omine.

Japan Travel: Nyoirinji Temple fall foliage & cherry blossom Mt. Yoshino, Nara32
Nyoirinji Temple was originally established in the 10th century, a quiet, medium sized temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism.
Unlike Yoshino's other sites on the mountain slope opposite the town, Nyoirinji was where Emperor Go-Daigo worshipped. He established the court in Yoshino (Southern Court) in rivalry with the court in Kyoto (Northern Court).
Emperor Go-Daigo later died in Yoshino and the hill behind the temple holds the tomb of the emperor. In the precinct, there are mausoleum housing a wooden figure allegedly made by the emperor himself. There are also other buildings including a tahoto style pagoda and a treasure house in the grounds of Nyoirinji. The treasure house displays mandala, religious objects and artifacts from the Emperor Go-Daigo's court. Also on display are several paintings depicting scenes of Kusunoki Masatsura, Go-Daigo's loyal retainer, making a final prayer at Nyoirinji before departure to defend the emperor from the rivaling Northern Court forces and finally died. The door on which Kusunoki and other defenders inscribed their names and a poem is displayed in the treasure house.
