Trip to Wazuka Tea Village - Vegan in Kyoto
Trip to Wazuka Tea Village - Vegan in Kyoto
This is our trip to Wazuka, a small village in Kyoto with wonderful tea fields and a magical atmosphere. Not only did we have tea and biked everywhere, we were even able to find vegan food! The menu offered a vegetarian curry (no milk nor eggs).
If you go to Wazuka, an alternative could be zaru matcha soba (order it without tsuyu), with your own soy sauce or the shop's dashi-free soy sauce (if they have it). If you do not know how to ask in Japanese, the video below may be helpful

Living in Harmony with Tea in Wazuka village, Kyoto
Matcha was introduced from China along with Buddhism and used as a medicine in zen temples. Now, the younger generation enjoys tea in unique ways. In Wazuka town, life revolves around tea.

Naraijuku - Japan’s Oldest Village
Naraijuku is one of the 11th villages that was on the Nakasendo, one of the main routes that linked Edo (the old name of Tokyo) and Kyoto during the Edo era (1603-1868).
It was an inn village where people would rest hence its name Narai-juku (Juku means in).

Most Beautiful but Hidden Village in Japan - Ine no funaya | MerRyan North Kyoto Guide 伊根の舟屋
* added subtitles for those who have difficulties understanding MerRyan's accent and voice!
Ine 伊根 is a town located in northern Kyoto Prefecture. It has a long and rich history as a fishing village and is one of the most beautiful village in Japan.
Ine is famous for the funaya 舟屋, or boathouses. It is a traditional fishing town and the seafood is very fresh and affordable. Some of the boathouses are lodgings which guests can arrange to stay in. The town is picturesque from many angles and popular among Japanese and tourists.
MerRyan visited Ine Cafe for lunch and cakes, and it is very tasty and affordable. Definitely a recommendation - even by the locals!

Tecchan Tea, Wazuka, Kyoto Japan
A grower from Wazuka, Japan, Tecchan is a 5th generation tea-maker, taught by his father who is a 4th generation tea-maker. The techniques passed down in the family shine in their tea, which has great complexity and full flavors.
He is a neighboring farm to Kyoto Obubu and Osamu.
Absolutely Beautiful Funaya Boat Houses of the Ine Fishing Village in Japan (伊根)
Ine (伊根) a fishing village in northern Kyoto and not too far from Amanohashidate, is world famous for its Funaya — literally translating to boat house. Approximately 230 of these wooden boat houses still stand today lining the Ine Bay. The Funaya have a garage for boat and living spaces on the upper floors.
Talia and I explore Ine on a tour boat where we get to feed the seagulls and other boats while enjoying the beautiful view of the Funaya along the bay.

Obub Tea Plantations, Wazuka, Kyoto Japan
Over 15 years ago, president and founder of Obubu, Akihiro Akky Kita, visited Wazuka, Kyoto. The tea produced in this rural district is known as Ujicha, one of the highest quality premium teas in Japan. Akky fell in love with tea and has gone from tea farmer apprentice to one of the most respected growers in the community. In 2004 he met Yasuharu Matsumoto and the two discovered a similar vision to cultivate Wazuka tea and share it directly with tea drinkers around the world. They now manage 4 acres, most this land is abandoned tea fields that are now productive and contributing to the community's economy.

Wazuka Green Tea Farms, Japan
Wazuka Green Tea Farms, Japan
Wazuka is a town located in Soraku District, Kyoto prefecture, Japan. Surrounded by mountains and crossed by a river, it is not only a place of picturesque scenery, but is also renowned as a premium region for producing Japanese green tea. Wazuka is home to roughly 300 tea growing families. The area was selected in the Kamakura period (1192 – 1333) for tea production and has enjoyed an 800-year history as one of the main production areas of Ujicha. Today, while Ujicha comprises only 3% of the tea produced in Japan, it enjoys royal status as one of the most highly prized and respected teas in the country. Also a considerable crop of rice is produced among other agricultural products.
Wazuka's band of top tea farmers known as the Yukichaken and the local community are in cooperation with NICE one of the major volunteer program companies and hold together the biggest annual work camp at the end of August lasting 2 weeks. The program is open to about 12 foreigners per year and an equal number of Japanese work campers.

Kyoto Festival: Tea Festival in Wazuka, Kyoto (Chagenkyo Matsuri)
Located southeast of Kyoto, the town of Wazuka isn't a place most tourists make it out to, despite how charming the rural community can be. But this weekend (November 7th - 8th, 2015) you may want to reconsider, seeing as the annual Chagenkyo Matsuri, also known as the Teatopia Festival, is being held at the Wazuka Sports Park!
At the Chagenkyo Matsuri you can explore the world of green tea in Wazuka, one of the first places chosen to grow tea when it was imported from China over 800 years ago. Take a tour through tea fields, watch how the locals hand roll the tea leaves in preparation, sample the Japanese varieties of tea and learn their differences, or wander over to the World Tea Promenade to sample tea from all over the world! With local arts, food, music, and kind people, a trip to the Chagenkyo Matsuri may be a fun day for the tea, art, or country enthusiast! Our team certainly enjoyed it!
For directions and a guide to events, check out this year's official pamphlet here:
Note: this video was taken at the 2014 Chagenkyo Matsuri hosted at the Obubu Tea Farm
