Youghal Boardwalk set to be extended
The boardwalk in Youghal is to be extended from Claycastle to Redbarn following confirmation of €500,000 in funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
Phase 1 of the project opened in 2012.
Since then, it has attracted huge numbers on a daily basis to the beach throughout the year, delivering a significant tourism and economic boost to the local economy.

Youghal Boardwalk 2015
Youghal’s Eco-Boardwalk Re-instated Following Storm Damage
After an hiatus of some 16 months, Youghal is delighted to announce that it’s much loved and missed Boardwalk is now reinstated and fully operational. The hugely popular amenity became victim of the aggressive storm that struck so many coastal areas back in January of 2014, leaving local and visitor alike bereft of the hugely popular amenity.
With the aid of funding from The Dept. of the Environment and project managed by the Coastal Management section of Cork County Council, all in Youghal may tread the boards once more taking in the refreshing sea breezes, under the protective shadows of historic Claycastle Hill.
The reinstated boardwalk consists of 400 metres of hardwood panels sourced in Cameroon, fixed to the original steel pylons, sunk deep into the sand. It is totally Disability Access Friendly. As well as being a healthy and pleasant amenity it has also proven to be a venue for great social interaction. With reinstatement completed focus can now be shifted to the progression into Phase 2 of the project which will see the walkway extended to Redbarn and the Quality Hotel and self-catering units.
Helen Mulcahy, Staff Officer at East Cork Municipal District, stated that “Cork County Council, and in particular the East Cork Municipal District is delighted to see the boardwalk back and open for business. 16 months have passed since the Boardwalk was devastated by the storms of last Winter – its loss was felt every day. Sincere thanks must go to the Department of The Environment for funding the re-instatement and also to the Coastal Management Unit of Cork County Council who managed the project. It is wonderful to see such a fantastic amenity back for all of us to enjoy.”
It is also worth noting that some salvaged timbers from the original boardwalk have been recycled and used at another of Youghal’s tourist attractions. Following excavation of the Church floor at St. Mary’s Collegiate Church (13th century & National Monument) a newly discovered 17th century headstone is now encased in the recycled and polished wood panels of Youghal’s original boardwalk. Ironically, St. Mary’s Collegiate Church was itself destroyed by storm the 12th century.
History makes history!
Boardwalk Youghal 6Jan14
The sea, at 8:30am on 6th January, breaking up what was left of Youghal's boardwalk which had already been badly damaged in a storm on 2nd/3rd January. The boardwalk had proved to be a very popular attraction since it opened in July 2012 and it is very sad to see it destroyed. I doubt if it will be re-built. Apologies for the shaky video and the wind noise - there was a storm-force gale at the time.
St. Patrick's Day in Youghal 1983
This video has to separate parades: The first part of the video up to the 5min 10secs (Just to the shot of the boat in the harbour) is probably from the 1982 St. Patrick's Day Parade or earlier - The rest of the video is the 1983 parade. This video was recorded by local man Willie O'Mahony and shows the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Youghal back in 1983 (and also the parade from 1982 or earlier).
This video was recorded by local man Willie O'Mahony and shows the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Youghal back in 1983. The parade can be seen in its entirety marching along Kent Street and The Mall and then going up the main street, passing the podium where the Youghal Town Councillors, TD's, heads of the local churches and dignitaries are seated. Most clubs and organisations can be seen in this fascinating clip as well as The Boys' Brigade who were celebrating their 100 anniversary that year.

Youghal Boardwalk Official Relaunch 2015
Second Time Round for Minister Michael Ring TD as Youghal Eco-Boardwalk Re-Opens to Public.
Michael Ring TD, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport today (14th May 2015) ‘officially re-launched’ the Youghal Eco-Boardwalk, having performed the original opening back in July 2012.
With funding of €200,000 from the Department of the Environment and project managed by the Coastal Management Section of Cork County Council, the boardwalk was recently re-instated having fallen victim to the aggressive storms that struck many coastal areas in January 2014. The boardwalk consists of 400 metres of hardwood panels sourced in Cameroon, fixed to the original steel pylons, sunk deep into the sand. It is completely disability access friendly. The original facility proved to be immensely popular, becoming a daily destination for many walkers of all ages. As well as being a healthy and pleasant amenity it has also proven to be a venue of great social interaction and a key driver of tourism in the area.
The Minister also performed another official duty by opening ‘The Raleigh Quarter’ in the historic area of the town of Youghal. The area is seen as key to Failte Ireland’s recent ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ initiative and incorporates the medieval town walls and gardens and St. Mary’s Collegiate Church. The Raleigh Quarter will be the ‘visual identity’ for the area, using the world famous ‘Renaissance Man’ and one time Mayor of Youghal as the “hook” to entice international visitors to the historic area. Visitors will be guided through the area by following a series of branded ‘Raleigh Quarter’ interpretive panels.
As part of his visit the Minister reviewed the progress of the Youghal Clockgate Tower Building which is set to open to the public in 2016 as a visitor attraction, bringing an additional €1.2M to the local economy per annum once opened.
