The McGrath family visit to the Clock Gate Tower in Youghal
John and Olive McGrath and the extended McGrath family with storyteller Dorothy Heaphy, Manager Sinead Goggin and Mel the Storyteller were very special guests at the newly refurbished Youghal Clock Gate Tower on Saturday 19th November 2016. The McGrath family lived in the Clock Gate Tower up to 1959 and were welcomed back to see the old family home which now forms part of the story of the building.
- After almost a decade in the making the iconic Youghal Clock Gate Tower finally opened to the public as part of Fáilte Ireland’s experience brand, Ireland’s Ancient East.
With a price tag of close to €750,000 the building is set to drive many thousands of both domestic and international visitors to the East Cork Town, bringing a much needed €1.4M boost to the local economy on an annual basis. Funding of €200,000 was received from Failte Ireland for the project under the ‘Ireland’s Ancient East Experience Development Capital Grants Scheme’.
Designed by Scroope Design, the story is unique on a national if not international level, spanning 600 years to the present day. Elements of the story include the building being used as a ‘gaol’ – which precedes that of Cork Gaol, Kilmainham Gaol and Wexford Gaol heritage sites. Other highlights of the story include that of the McGrath family who lived in the Tower. Visitors will hear directly from John McGrath now in his 70’s and still living in Youghal. John tells s the tale of his life from being born in the Tower and the tough conditions the family endured through a wonderful audio visual presentation.
Project Manager for the site, Aileen Murray explains what they set out to achieve with the building: “We really sought to engage the visitor physically and emotionally. We believe we have produced a visitor experience that is ‘hands on, minds on and hearts on’. Our tour involves our wonderful storytellers, dressed as ‘time’, explaining and describing, encouraging participation, inviting questions, listening to visitors, and fostering dialogue. We are sure these elements combined will deliver a valuable and memorable visitor experience”.
Owned by Cork County Council, the building was developed on a phased basis since 2008 by the local authority and also included conservation and restoration works funded by South & East Cork Development (SECAD) under European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the National Development Plan.
Tours operate Thursday – Sunday until April, from which point it will open 7 days a week through until end of September. The cost of entry is €9.50pp and is by way of guided tour only. Further details log onto youghalclockgate.ie or call 024-20769.

This film that takes a contemplative look at what happens to a town when all its industry disappears, its economic centre collapses and speculators change the landscape.
This is a story of how a town can effectively die when politicians make the wrong decisions and when politics has no vision.
With interviews from experts and local businesses, the film reflects on how greed and apathy led to the neglect of a town throughout the Irish 'boom years'.
Comments on Town Out Of Time:
I was very impressed. It's an excellent documentary and deserves a wider audience.
Dr. Gwenda Young. Senior Film Lecturer, UCC
A searingly honest, well-crafted, well-researched documentary portraying a town struggling to re-establish its identity.
Colm Keane. RTE Broadcaster
...it is taut and focused, sharp and powerful... visually, the film is stunning. The overall effect is of a tragic beauty. This is the kind of filmmaking that we need.
Dr. Kieran Keohane. Sociologist and author, UCC
...it's excellent: raw, powerful...The montage of the closed shop-fronts, in particular, was stunning... a superb piece of work.
Carl O' Brien. Chief Reporter, The Irish Times.

The McGrath's of the Clock Gate
Youghal man John McGrath lived in the Clock Gate from 1939 to 1959 speaking about his memories of those day and other stories. The tower built in 1777 was part of the towns fortifications. It served the town as a gaol and a public gallows 1837. It then became a family home until 1959 when the last family left, which was the McGrath family.
Having grown up in the Clock Gate, John McGrath left for Britain during the 1950's as did many of his contemporaries. There he observed the post-war housing improvements in Britain, thus, on his return he urged his parents to seek more comfortable and conventional accommodation. They reluctantly left the clock gate in 1959. The McGrath home, will offer a glimpse into the social, political, and economic changes experienced during the twentieth century.

Bobby Chapple Home Movie - Shop Collapse in Youghal 1960s.
This is interesting footage filmed by Bobby Chapple of the collapse of the building at the corner of O'Rahilly Street ( Nile St.) and North Main Street, Youghal, sometime in the late 1960s. It is where Cal Flavins's hardware store is located now. Luckily enough no one was injured when the whole structure came tumbling down thanks to local man, Boy Daly, who alerted the staff and customers of the impending collapse.
