Youghal's beautiful beaches in County Cork - Ireland
Youghal's beautiful beaches in County Cork - Ireland. Youghal adjoins a number of beaches including the 5 km beach to the west of the town. Youghal's three beaches: Front Strand, Claycastle and Redbarn are the envy of the south.
Redbarn Beach was officially designated with ‘Blue Flag’ status for 2019. The Blue Flag, operated in Ireland by An Taisce, is one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels.
Youghal’s other beautiful beaches are Claycastle Beach with the wonderful boardwalk and the Front Strand adjacent to the Promenade. The Mall Dock is a lovely small beach in the centre of town. This is great news for the town at the start of the tourist season combined with the recently installed Pontoon by the quayside.
Youghal is proudly hosting the @Ironman Cork this June 2019. The town is busy gearing up for this massive event which will attract at least 10,000 people to Youghal and East Cork.

Irish Army Marching In Youghal 1956
Unique film footage of the Irish Army marching into Youghal back in 1956. The original film was shot by James Burke who had a Chemist shop in the centre of town. James was himself an ex army man who served in the Irish Army during the Emergency. His wife Josephine and children, Liam, Aidan and Mary Burke are seen at the beginning of the clip along with Rosaleen Cronin from Tallow St and Tommy Carey from The Mall. They are seen waiting for the army near the Stone Bridge at the northern end of town ( You can see the late Theo Vastenhout's house the retired Dutch Sea Captain and former harbour master in the background. That has since been demolished and the roudabout is located near there now) The troops marched from Cappoquin in Co Waterford to the military camp site at Summerfield in the western end of town. The officer saluting at the near the start is Capt. Ed Vaughan from Macroom.
The army enter town and are seen here marching up North Main St., Youghal, Here you can see the old Morrisons Garage in the centre of town and the old building where the Post Office is now and also North Cross St ( The Post Office Lane)
The military camp site at Summerfield (also known locally as 'Hurleys Hill') was across the road from the Rifle Range (The Butts in the front strand) where the Army would practice firing. There was another camp site at the Barrack road where the Church of the Holy Family is now. Further on that road was the military barrack's itself, which is now Dermot Hurley Est and the Youghal Hospital. This was where the where the barrack's HQ was located (The British Army barrack's prior to that before 1922)
Near the end of the film you can see An Taoiseach John A. Costello taking the salute with Major General M. J. Costello, Q.C. Southern Command and other dignitaries as the army marching past at Upper Strand. If you look carefully you can see the marching bands and soldiers still marching in the background at the front strand area such was the length of the parade. (Also you can see Hurst's old shop in the background before been destroyed in the 1963 storm). Original film footage courtesy of Liam Burke from The James Burke Collection.
We are pretty certain that the parade took place on the 22nd July 1956 but don't know what the occasion was. If you know any information on this event please email to news@youghalonline.com and we can add to and update the story which would be great.
youghalonline.com would like to thank The James Burke Collection
It's a Wonderful Christmas in Youghal 2013
Youghal4All have some wonderful and magical Christmas events planned for this year. Events begin on Sat. 7th Dec 2013 with the reverse Santa back in situ to accept gifts from all the caring boys and girls. Bring your unwanted toys to him so he can help out more children than ever this year with the help of the St. Vincent de Paul.
The main events are on Saturday 14th December 2013. Santa will be available again to receive gifts during the day and at 6 o'clock he will lead a parade of lights and bells through the streets. Dress up or wear your cosy and colourful hats and scarfs and follow Santa, Mrs Clause and their helpers to the Mall Arts Centre. There the North Pole visitors will have a chat with all the boys and girls and give them a chance to see if their names are on the naughty or nice list for Christmas. Terry one of Santa's helpers will then tell some stories and help children plant magic seeds in the candy cane garden and see the magic of growing their own candy cane. Afterwards a Christmas carol concert with hot chocolate and cookies will take place. Lots of local groups are taking part and a real Christmas atmosphere is promised (there is a €5 entrance fee per family to cover the costs of this concert). Look out for Holly Berry, the Christmas wish fairy.
On the 21st of December pay your final visit to the reverse Santa and head to the Red House North Main Street to hear a host of choirs in the garden in what promises to be a unique event.

Cobh Animation Team Visit Perks Entertainment Centre Youghal
Perks Entertainment Centre, Youghal and staff were honoured to host the ladies of the Animation Team of the Titanic in Cobh who promote all of East Cork voluntarily in their beautiful period 1912 handmade costumes.
These ladies operate on a voluntary basis which is a tremendous boost to East Cork having people so willing and interested in the tourist industry go forward and promote it like this on a voluntary basis.
Once again we at Perks were extremely proud to have these ladies visit us and ride our Carousel. We would like to congratulate them on the fabulous work they are doing.
The Animation Team, was formed during Titanic week in Cobh in April, and have continued to meet and greet every liner and also attend festivals and events all over the country to promote the harbour town and its connection to the ill fated ship. They go to hospitals, care homes, shopping centres and theatres all by invite from those who wish to have their bit of Titanic experience brought to them.
The ladies of the Cobh Animation Team, led by Claire Cullinane, dress in fabulous Victorian, Georgian, and Edwardian dresses and outfits and you'd be forgiven for feeling transported back to a bygone age.
Moby Dick Re-enactment in Youghal
A group of YouTubers headed by Seán Creagh, touring the country on the trail of some of the biggest names in film history ever to come to Ireland. First stop, Youghal! On Sunday (4th Sept. 2011) saw the start of this groups new “road-trip” film campaign. A group of seven actors, artists and film enthusiasts arrived in Youghal in search of the site where John Huston directed the 1956 classic, Moby Dick.
The film was, naturally enough, quite an attraction at the time it was filmed. People came from Cork City and all around to witness the event. But it’s wonderful to see that, over fifty years later, it is still bringing curious visitors to the town! Starring Oscar Award winner Gregory Peck as the fearsome but intriguing Captain Ahab, Moby Dick was the ideal film for emerging film-maker Seán Creagh to begin with. He and his team aimed to retell some of the important historical facts surrounding the film and also to put their own spin on the classic with a short re-enactment.
Gregory Peck was, of course, the star of the film. However, it should not be forgotten that Youghal itself took on an important role in the film: it played the part of the American shipping town New Bedford. Cra’ze Ireland began their day by capturing some of the more scenic elements of the town by itself. Elements like the iconic clock tower emphasise just how historic and important the location is even without the influence of Hollywood. After all, Edmund Spenser wrote part of The Fairie Queene during his visit; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle named a character from one of his later Holmes stories Inspector Youghal as a tribute to the town, and Sir Walter Raleigh left behind a fine legacy, having been its mayor for two years and (more crucially, from an Irish perspective) having chosen it as the planting ground for Europe’s very first potato.

Youghal Boardwalk 2015
Youghal’s Eco-Boardwalk Re-instated Following Storm Damage
After an hiatus of some 16 months, Youghal is delighted to announce that it’s much loved and missed Boardwalk is now reinstated and fully operational. The hugely popular amenity became victim of the aggressive storm that struck so many coastal areas back in January of 2014, leaving local and visitor alike bereft of the hugely popular amenity.
With the aid of funding from The Dept. of the Environment and project managed by the Coastal Management section of Cork County Council, all in Youghal may tread the boards once more taking in the refreshing sea breezes, under the protective shadows of historic Claycastle Hill.
The reinstated boardwalk consists of 400 metres of hardwood panels sourced in Cameroon, fixed to the original steel pylons, sunk deep into the sand. It is totally Disability Access Friendly. As well as being a healthy and pleasant amenity it has also proven to be a venue for great social interaction. With reinstatement completed focus can now be shifted to the progression into Phase 2 of the project which will see the walkway extended to Redbarn and the Quality Hotel and self-catering units.
Helen Mulcahy, Staff Officer at East Cork Municipal District, stated that “Cork County Council, and in particular the East Cork Municipal District is delighted to see the boardwalk back and open for business. 16 months have passed since the Boardwalk was devastated by the storms of last Winter – its loss was felt every day. Sincere thanks must go to the Department of The Environment for funding the re-instatement and also to the Coastal Management Unit of Cork County Council who managed the project. It is wonderful to see such a fantastic amenity back for all of us to enjoy.”
It is also worth noting that some salvaged timbers from the original boardwalk have been recycled and used at another of Youghal’s tourist attractions. Following excavation of the Church floor at St. Mary’s Collegiate Church (13th century & National Monument) a newly discovered 17th century headstone is now encased in the recycled and polished wood panels of Youghal’s original boardwalk. Ironically, St. Mary’s Collegiate Church was itself destroyed by storm the 12th century.
History makes history!

Bonfire Night at the Mall, Youghal, Co. Cork around the 1970's
Bonfire Night - 23rd June, St. John’s Eve. - Bonfire night was a very big event growing up in town. The children (and adults) would spend days or weeks collecting the wood for the fire. Climbing trees, chopping the branches down and then dragging them along the street was the thing to do during the school summer holidays. Someone would be elected to collect the money to buy sweets and fuel at Bridgie Quirkes Shop? at the corner of Windmill lane. When the sun went down the fire was lit. This was done by the oldest in the group or who ever was in 'charge'. There was fierce competition and rivalry from the different areas of town over who had the largest bonfire. The bonfire at Sarsfield Tce was always considered to be the biggest. You could see the smoke rising over the town as the fires were lit. The tradition goes way back to pagan times and later incorporated into the Christian feast of Saint John the Baptist. These customs and traditions are largely ignored nowadays. Health and Safety is a major factor. Cork Hill, Sarsfield Terrace, The Mall, Blackwater Heights, the Slob and the Strand were just some of the areas around town that celebrated the custom. Looking back you would wonder how we done it. - Michael Hussey.
This film clip was taken by the late Billy Matthes around the late 1960's or 1970s.
Sir Walter Raleigh's House in Youghal back in the 1930's
Myrtle Grove also known as Sir Walter Raleigh's House in Youghal back in the 1930's.
Myrtle Grove is an Elizabethan gabled house in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland. The house is notable as a rare example in Ireland of a 16th-century unfortified house. It is situated in a secluded spot, close to the Collegiate Church of St Mary Youghal.
It was home for Sir Walter Raleigh in 1588-1589. Myrtle Grove's South Gable is where Edmund Spenser is reputed to have written part of his poem The Faerie Queene. The house was acquired in 1602 from Sir Walter Raleigh's Irish estate by Richard Boyle, who later became Earl of Cork. Though remodeled twice it is still the best Tudor house in Ireland. The house was acquired by Hayman family in the 18th century.
In the 20th century, it was the home of Sir Henry Arthur Blake and Lady Blake. The house remains in private ownership.
The house is reputed to be where potatoes were first planted in Europe. This is however, unlikely as potatoes were in present in Spain in 1536. There is a similar legend stating that Myrtle Grove was where tobacco was first smoked by Walter Raleigh. A servant was said to have observed Raleigh from behind and seen smoke rising from him. Thinking that Raleigh was on fire he threw a bucket of water on him to douse the fire. This is unlikely to have occurred in Myrtle Grove as the legend is also associated with several of Raleigh's houses.
Myrtle Grove, a poem written in Spenserian stanzas by James Reiss, and published in Fugue magazine (the University of Idaho), summer/fall 2007, pp. 22-24, develops the legend that Edmund Spenser wrote portions of his great epic, The Faerie Queene, under an aureole window in the South Gable of Raleigh's house. - wiki
Eye-catching 'Tulip Umbrellas' Shapes A New Landscape In Youghal

The umbrellas are elegant slim objects of sculptural beauty, with the canopy fabric encapsulated by the umbrella arms, reaching for the skies. The 12 umbrellas are like flowers and can be atmospherically lit in different colour moods. The innovative design has shaped a new landscape at the waterfront in Youghal.
Works included a complete over-lay of the car park, new limestone paving, a new sea wall providing protection from the elements, and thirteen new lights. The re-development of the area, and the inclusion of the twelve Tulip Architectural Umbrellas will serve to dramatically enhance the quays around the area, and will also create a unique and decorative vista in the town. The creation of this captivating space, aimed to enhance festivals and events, will ensure weather protection and lengthening the season for tourists and visitors to Youghal.
