Kanamara P*nis Festival Exposed ★ ONLY in JAPAN
★ Special Episode ★ This festival will next be held on Sunday, April 5 2020. Here's a preview with all the background you'll need.
Japan's Kanamara Matsuri as you've never seen it before!
Every now and then something very bizarre from Japan pops up in the news. This time, it happens to be bright pink and carried around the streets of a town near Tokyo. The Kanamara Matsuri / Festival is definitely unusual but there is much more to this story including a strong historical backbone and religious significance.
So – WHY #JAPAN ?!?! WHY ?!?
The international media sees the images and write the stories but never ask the questions. Let me do that for you in this episode.
The festival sometimes dubbed the “Penis” festival or the Utamaro Festival has a long history going back 200 years.
It was created by a transgender salon in Asakusa called Elizabeth who wanted to bring attention to the issue of STD, HIV / AIDS and the LGBT community. They succeeded in getting a lot of attention but over the last several years, the message has gotten lost in the shock and -- bright pink of their hand made phallus. Whatever you may think about Elizabeth, there is no doubt that it is the most photographed mikoshi in Japan!
Kanamara #Shrine is dedicated to both fertility and a place for prayer for women afflicted by sexual diseases. It's a place women go to today to pray to get pregnant and for a healthy child.
Those who have been unfortunate to contract a STD have been coming here for centuries. The priests approach those afflicted with a lot of compassion. Kanamara Shrine is certainly one that opens its arms to anyone and everyone who is suffering and that compassion is admirable.
In recent years, the worldwide media attention has been overwhelming skewed on the weird and the Kanamara Matsuri has become something of a joke and embarrassment in many Japanese eyes. I really hope that this episode can help shed light on the cultural, historical and religious significance of this festival in Japan today. It's more than a gag, a comedy piece.
Parental Guidance suggested:
Because viewers of the shows come from all different backgrounds and ages, I highly recommend anyone under 13 have a parent watch with them. There are no actual body parts shown but I know the material is sensitive for parents; and parents should be the ones making the decision if this should be seen or not. I added a rating at the opening for this purpose.
Where is Kanamara Shrine?
Here's a Google Map:
Address: 2-13-16 Daishi Ekimae, Kawasaki Ward, Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture 210-0802
How to get to the Kanamara Matsuri:
Station: Kawasakidaishi Station / 川崎大師
Take the JR LINE to Kawasaki Station then change to the Keikyu Dashi Line, a 50 meter walk from JR. Take the train 3 stops, 140 Yen.

Eerie photographs show an ‘apocalyptic’ amusement park that has been reclaimed by nature after lying abandoned for a decade.
Once an intriguing German-inspired attraction, Glück Kingdom now looks more like an end of the world set than a tourist destination.
The rides have rusted over, trees have reclaimed the tracks and in the midst of summer, much of the funfair cannot be seen through the land’s engulfing forestry.
The theme park in Hokkaido, Japan, was opened in 1989, to draw more visitors to the island.
But ten years ago, it powered-down all rides and shut its doors for the final time.

LEAD IN :
Christmas is a time for love and romance for young Japanese couples.
Many dating couples visit the city of Kobe to enjoy western style Christmas lights.
STORYLINE:
Viewed from the mountains above the city, Kobe looks very much like any other modern urban Japanese landscape.
To people in Western Japan, however, Kobe evokes a very different set of images. It is a city associated with romance and particularly so during the Christmas season.
On the hills directly north of the city centre, lies the Kitano district.
This area was home to a largely European community who lived in Kobe during the late 19th century.
They built western-style houses that came to be known as Ijin-kan, (literally foreigners' houses) many of which are now open to the public as museums.
During the day this area is one of the favourite spots for dating couples.
Amid ubiquitous images of Santa San, as Santa Claus is known here, couples often begin their date course in this area.
Christmas here has very little to do with religion and if some families celebrate the festival it is very limited when compared to the family gatherings that mark New Year on January 1.
Presents are given and received to a certain extent but December 25th is a regular working day.
But for some reason Christmas like Kobe has become associated with dating and romance, and as dusk falls dating couples arrive in ever more numbers looking for romance in the twinkling lights of the harbour district and China Town.
Tomonobu and his girlfriend Tokiko have been seeing each other for a year and a half and have come to Kobe from Osaka to celebrate Christmas.
Tomonobu says that Kobe has a European Christmas atmosphere that you can't find in other parts of Japan.
Another young couple say they love the lighting as it creates a romantic mood for couples.

Ainu-style Japanese Doll Set - Aboriginal Craft Ningyos
Description
This splendid Japanese wooden doll set features the images of a man and woman likened after the dress and appearance of the aboriginal Ainu who are believed to be the original inhabitants of the Japanese islands. Archeological evidence indicates that the Ainu may have once lived in villages throughout most of the Japanese archipelago, though today they are found primarily on the northernmost Japanese island of Hokkaido. The distinct dress, somewhat Caucasian-like appearance, language and unique culture of the Ainu set them apart from the majority of the Japanese population, who respect the Ainu and appreciate their culture as an important link to the past. These carved wooden figures are in good condition with only small marks and scratches and wear a beautiful patina indicative of age and past display. The figures dates from the mid to late Japanese Showa period (1926-1989).

Cherry Blossoms Around Tokyo: Shinjuku, Meguro, Ueno and Odaiba ★ ONLY in JAPAN #7
Let's head to Yurakucho and the Godzilla statue, Shinjuku Gyoen National Park, the Meguro River at night, Odaiba and Ueno Park for some cherry blossom viewing.
Knowing the cherry blossoms (sakura) is to know Japan itself. Their beauty comes quickly and is short lived -- falling from the tree after only 10 days. The samurai lived knowing their life would be short, and that spirit is in each cherry blossom.
Called mono no aware which is deeply rooted in Buddhism, Japanese have a strong connection to all things. The beauty felt for the sakura is deep. Mono no aware is also an important factor in how Japanese connect to manga, anime and things important to them.
In this episode, John travels around Tokyo taking in the cherry blossoms spots, investigating hanami (cherry blossom viewing and picnicking) and talk with some hanami-goers. Why is there such a big celebration for the cherry blossoms in Japan?
This show has been created and produced by John Daub. He's been living and working in Japan for over 15 years and regularly reports on an International TV Show for Japan's International Channel.

Comfort Women film expose
This is an expose (telling the truth) about the 1944 U.S. Army film discovered and released by the Seoul National University in South Korea.
In the early part of July a professor and his team at Seoul National University released an 18 minute film that made world-wide news. It was a film they located at the United States National Archives outside Washington, DC in College Park. They claimed the film supports their claim of Korean women held as sexual slaves, comfort women, by the Imperial Japanese Army.
The film was made in 1944 in China by members of a U.S. Army Signal Corps unit attached to the Nationalist Chinese Army. Shun and I reviewed the film and immediately realized there was something missing and their story lacked evidence as well many facts seem to be missing. We agreed we would have to travel to the National Archives in the USA, College Park, again.
It was a worthwhile trip as many miss-truths (lies and deliberate misleading) we uncovered. The Seoul University team stated they researched the National Archives for two years. Really? We found out they were at the National Archives in 2015 and December, 2016 on two separated short trips, not a full two years as they alluded to. The team located the film in December, 2016 and released it to the public in early July, 2017. Why did they hold on to it for over six months? Could it be they held it because President Park was still in office and they wanted to impact the new president to resurrect the Comfort Women money and apology issue with Japan again? The current President Moon assumed office in May, and two months later the film released.
When the film was released it was narrated with a voice placed this year, not in 1944 because the original film in 1944 was silent. So how did they determine a silent film was of Korean Comfort Women? Further into their narration they stated the women were “prisoners of war?” Wait a minute if they were rescued by the Chinese Army from sexual slavery why were they classified as “prisoners of war.” Very simple that is because they were aiding the enemy the Imperial Japanese Army. Their own narration disproves their claim. Could they be that stupid at the Seoul National University? Apparently so.
The narrator claims the women had frightened looks on their faces. That was the only truth in that narration because of course they were in fear, they were Chinese ladies caught by Chinese troops aiding the Imperial Japanese Army.
How can I claim they were Chinese girls? Very simple because the National Archives in their written description of the film states “Chinese girls.” No mention of Koreans, sex slaves, or Comfort Women. Also the 18 second film of these women was part of a ten minute film illustrating military activity in China. They also released another film where they claim it was of Imperial Japanese Army soldiers gathering around a hotel and labeled “Japanese Army’s Sex Slavery Camp.” This description conflicts with the U.S. Army’s description which described it as “Grand Hotel used by Japanese for Geisha girls.” It is universally known “Geisha girls” are Japanese. The U.S. Army’s description did not mention Korea girl, Chinese girls, Comfort Women, or sexual slavery. Once again a fantasy by the Seoul National University team.
The label of Koreans or sex slaves or comfort women is totally made up by the team at Seoul National University, not by the U.S. Army or the National Archives in College Park, USA. One again we located official U.S. documents disproving the lies coming off the Korean peninsula.
I would like to say to that team at Seoul National University what a famous Japanese manga artist once told me: “You liar!”
I wonder where else Shun and I will travel to uncover more lies told by the promoters of Japan bashing on the peninsular west of the Sea of Japan.

Engaged journalism revives Rainbow Warrior story 30 years on (Café Pacific)
AUCKLAND (Pacific Media Watch): Author David Robie and Little Island Press are soon releasing the fifth edition of the Eyes of Fire book, marking the 30th anniversary of the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior.
Robie, who was a journalist on board the ship in 1985, says his focus was on the humanitarian voyage to Rongelap Atoll and the new edition will put the bombing by French secret agents on 10 July 1985 into context.
“When I thought about it and planned what to do, I thought well this is going to be quite an extraordinary thing,“ he says.
“So I planned the book right from the start.
Publishing director at Little Island Press Tony Murrow says an innovative microsite was launched this week and it’s all about connecting communities.
“I think what we’ve seen with the 30 years that have passed since the Rainbow Warrior bombing, there’s a whole generation that doesn’t really know about this part of the Pacific, this episode in Pacific history.
French journalist Amelie David, who is now living in Auckland, wants to find out more about what the event means to the average New Zealander.
She says older generations of French people who live in Auckland know about the ship, but in her native France, it’s a different story.
“Back in the country though I would not say it’s a big topic and it’s a big issue,” she said.
Amelie says she hopes to help educate local French communities and encourage younger generations to learn about the incident.
