Oxford, NC - May 2018
Oxford is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States, with a population of 8,461 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Granville County.
History
The town's history dates to 1761, when local legislator Samuel Benton built a plantation home and called it Oxford. The legislature ordered the area around his plantation to be the seat of Granville County. The town was not incorporated until 1816.[6]
The first Masonic orphanage for children in the United States was built in Oxford. It was originally established as St. John's College in 1858. The college ceased operations shortly after opening, however. In 1872 the community decided that the property should be repurposed to educate disadvantaged populations. In December 1873 the first residents were admitted to the Oxford Orphans Asylum, which is today known as the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford. [7]
In 1851 James H. Horner established Horner Military Academy, which enrolled many young men from New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina and other states. Many of the students went on to become leaders in the United States government, such as James Crawford Biggs, Solicitor General under President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the inception of the New Deal.
The Oxford Female College was established in 1851 by North Carolina Baptists. After suffering financial difficulties, the college was sold and became a private educational institution renamed Oxford Female Seminary. In 1880 F. P. Hobgood took over leadership of the school, and it flourished until his death in 1924. The school closed the following year.
In 1883 the state legislature established the Colored Orphan Asylum in Oxford. Henry Plummer Cheatham, a former U.S. congressman (1889-1893), was appointed as superintendent in the early 1900s and led the institution for 28 years.
In 1970, Henry Marrow was killed in Oxford. The killing resulted in a racial protest. The events were chronicled by Timothy Tyson in the book Blood Done Sign My Name and a movie with the same name.
A Confederate statue was erected in 1909 by the Granville Grays United Daughters of the Confederacy at a cost of $3000.00 and valued in 2009 at $1,327,791.62. The monument was erected in the courthouse square facing away from the courthouse. The base, constructed of granite from Warren County, is 27 feet (8.2 m) tall, and the bronze statue is 7 feet (2.1 m) tall. The monument, a memorial to the Confederate veterans of Granville County that served in the Civil War in the Granville Grays Company D, 12th Regiment, was dedicated October 30, 1909. The statue had not arrived in time but the ceremony continued and the statue was placed at a later date.
Following the Oxford race riots, in which the movie correctly depicts protesters trying to topple the monument using ropes, the monument was moved in 1971, from the courthouse square to a location in front of the Richard H. Thornton Library. Since 2009, there has been a movement to have the monument moved to a graveyard located down the street.
The Central Orphanage, Granville County Courthouse, Joseph B. Littlejohn House, Locust Lawn, Oxford Historic District, Paschall-Daniel House, Archibald Taylor Plantation House, and Thorndale are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Charleston, SC Walking and Food Tours
I'm not sure I mentioned it in the video but Charleston, South Carolina is HOT in August. Just joking...not about the heat but about me mentioning it in the video. I should have counted but I think I said it was hot about a hundred times. Even though the heat was CRAZY we still had a great day. We participated in a walking tour and food tour both of which were really great and we would recommend if you are visiting. I'll link their websites below. Make comments or ask questions. Let's Travel Talk! Sandra.

---
The Native American presence at Hobcaw Barony is apparent in the property’s very name, said to be a Native American word meaning “between the waters.” Physical evidence is readily seen in the shell middens that line the shores of Hobcaw’s creeks and emerge as outcroppings in the marshes. Many other material remains have been found at Hobcaw in the form of pottery sherds, blades, points, and numerous other artifacts, yet much archaeological work remains to be done here.
In this video, Buster Hatcher, Chief of the Waccamaw Indian People, who are based in nearby Aynor, South Carolina, discusses the history and present-day circumstances of the Waccamaw and other Indian tribes in the region.

Clemson University's PeeDee REC Peach Breeding Research
Jonathan Windham discusses the research he's doing to give peach farmers a second chance at pollination based off of second bloom traits found in wild roses at the Clemson University Pee Dee Research and Education Center in Florence, SC.
Transcript:
A lot of people don't know that Clemson has a peach breeding program and it’s part of a national effort called The Rose Breed Project. And so, with peach breeding, you get one shot a year to make your crosses out in the field and in South Carolina we normally get hit with the late freeze, so if you make a cross in the field and then it gets hit with a late freeze, then you've lost your work for the year. But if that tree were to re-bloom, let's say in a greenhouse, then you could increase your odds of getting a successful cross in that season and moving your program forward as far as hybrids are concerned. So, with my graduate project, we are examining the re-blooming capacity found in roses naturally. Wild roses have developed a mutation when they bloom continuously throughout the year and we are studying that mutation to see if we can’t engineer that into our peaches. Long term, we are just trying to speed breed peaches for the Clemson peach breeding program, so we're giving our breeder more opportunities per season and the more hybrids that she can create per season, the more she can sort of weed through those bad genes and find that one hybrid that is really gonna stand out in South Carolina as far as production goes. Cross-pollination is a tried-and-true method, but it's rather slow. Peaches unfortunately take three to five years before they even flower or make fruit, so three to five years after you've done your initial pollination in the orchard, you have this hybrid that you can finally start evaluating the characteristics of this fruit. And so we're looking at newer, new techniques to see if we can’t increase the time between pollination and introducing a new hybrid to market. With this research, if we can understand the mechanism behind bloom time then we can create newer hybrids and these hybrids will require less fertilizers, less water, they’ll be more drought tolerant, more disease resistant. So, we're striving to create peach trees that require less input from the farmer, which will lower production costs for the farmer, which will ultimately lower costs for consumers. So the PeeDee REC is actually the plant-breeding REC so to speak. This is the headquarters of Clemson’s advanced plant technology program. A few years ago, we completely renovated the building. We have four brand new laboratories devoted to plant biotechnology and each of these laboratories is focusing on a different crop that's important to South Carolina. And peaches is one of those crops. South Carolina, we are actually the number two peach producer in the United States. A lot of people think it's Georgia, no we actually are second behind California in peach production, so peaches are really big deal in South Carolina and the more hybrids that we can create and the more more resistant varieties that we can get to market faster we're really going to do a lot for our industry.

Sara Simmonds - A Celebration of Life!
A Memorial service for Sara Lockhart Simmonds was held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at First United Methodist Church, Alexandria, Louisiana. She passed away at her home in Alexandria on Friday, November 15, 2019 at the age of 101. She is preceded in death by her parents, Sara and Robert M. Lockhart; sister, Dorothy Sable, and brother Robert M. Lockhart. Also preceded in death by her two husbands, Robert M. Allen, and Noel T. Simmonds. She is survived by her niece, Jeanne McClung, and husband Tony of Dallas, Texas; two nephews, Donald Sable of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Terry Simmonds of Ashville, North Carolina; and eight grand nieces and nephews. Sara was born in Greenville, Texas, and moved to Dallas at a young age. She married her first husband, Robert M. Allen for a year. Robert served in the Army during World War II as a navigator in a B-17. His aircraft crashed and he was killed during the Battle of the Bulge. Sara met and married her second husband, Dr. Noel T. Simmonds and moved to Alexandria. She was a long time devout member of First United Methodist Church of Alexandria.
Sara served several local organizations including sustaining initiative and sustaining member of the Junior League of Alexandria, President and Woman of the Year; a Founder of Rapides Symphony Orchestra and helped the Orchestra's Sustaining initiative; American Red Cross; United Way Director; Volunteers of America; Louisiana YWCA and others. She was a member of the Alexandria Rotary Club and was presented the Service Above Self Award in 2007.
Sara was instrumental bringing chapels to area prisons with the Louisiana Chapel Foundation. Since the Foundation was created in 1998, it has built 14 chapels, one expansion and one renovation in 10 Louisiana prisons. She continued supporting the foundation facilities with hymnals and bibles.
Sara founded the Apple Pie Brigade in 2004 when Idaho's 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team from the Idaho National Guard was stranded for several weeks caused by transportation backlogs. Much of what she did for soldiers and their families during that lengthy delay was more personal and unpublicized. While eating in the same restaurant as a soldier, she picked up the check for many and encouraged them to invite friends, filling up the restaurant. Sara led the charge to make them feel at home, including organizing a Thanksgiving dinner. In November of 2008, she was named an honorary Brigadier General and was given the silver brigadier general star. She refused to wear the star stating that the presentation should not single her out. It was a team effort. She was truly a public servant.
Sara supported the Youth Challenge Program (YCP), which helps at-risk youths. In 2017, at the age of 98, she went skydiving to raise funds for cadets to pursue their higher education opportunities after graduating from YCP.
Sara was quite an adventurer. She traveled all over the world, in all seven continents including North Pole, Antarctica-to see the Penguins, Europe, Mongolia in Russia, South America - to see the Amazon, Asia - Bali, China, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Bhutan.
Kent House Plantation was Sara's personal project. Sara was Kent House. She had the building moved to the current location. She had the Sugar Mill and Blacksmith built. She had the Eden building brought from the Eden Plantation and had it restored using original materials. When she had a mission; SHE HAD A MISSION!
Sara enthusiastically contributed funding for Whooping Crane rearing facilities at Audubon's Center for Research on Endangered Species. She shared her exuberance for the project with anyone who would listen. In February of 2011, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries released the first Whooping Cranes in Louisiana. Sara was there! She was given the Number 1 in the state license in the series. At her 100th birthday, she was awarded the International Crane foundation's Good Egg Award for her outstanding contributions to crane conservation and her love for humanity.
On Monday, the 19th of August, 2019, she was presented the first Hall of Fame award by the Central Louisiana Chamber of Commerce honoring her as Founder of the Apple Pie Brigade, for Dedication and Exceptional Service to Soldiers and Military Families.
On her 100th birthday party, Sara received two Proclamations from the local communities. One from Mayor Jacques Roy of Alexandria and one from Mayor Clarence Fields of Pineville. Among the accolades, Mayor Roy cited Sara's charity and philanthropic efforts. Mayor Fields cited her epitome of Christian living and giving of herself to help and support others.
The family is thankful to Sara's caregivers Linda Cole, Cathy Barron, LU Mangel and Compassionate Care Hospice personnel who contributed to her health and well being during her final days. They served as angels, comforting one of God's own. God bless them and their mission. They were, and are, true saints.

Yemassee:Gateway to Parris Island
Video made of the train station at Yemassee, South Carolina. Would love to see the town and train station revitalized. Also a museum built to honor the Marines that passed through on the way to Parris Island.
This video was made to tell the fascinating story of a recruits entry into the United States Marine Corp. It is my hope to bring about a public awareness of Yemassee and the historical significance it's landmarks such as its train station held in the entry of young recruits in their journey to becoming a United States Marine from 1915-1965.
I look forward to hearing from my fellow Marines, History Buffs, and anyone interested in helping get this train station and the original barracks made into a museum.
