Transcript:
The people of Thailand have a gentle kindness about them. They're infectiously positive, steeped in tradition, incredibly proud of their country, and the reason Thailand has been given the nickname, The Land of a Thousand Smiles.
Thailand is a tropical country that sits in South East Asia, It's home to nearly 70 million people and until 1949 was known as Siam. It was then the decision was made to rename the country, Thailand. Thai translating as free, so The Land of the Free. If you look into its history, it has a good reason to own this title. This South East Asian nation is the only country in the region to have avoided colonialism. Remaining a sovereign country in its own right, something that the Thai people are very proud of. Thailand is a noticeably Buddhist country. With peace and positivity at the forefront of their national identity, that welcomes all other religious beliefs, allowing for the full freedom of expression. Over the past two decades Westerners have been lured to Thailand, and now it caters for every type of tourists, from cheap hostels to five star resorts. But here lies the contradiction, tourism has had a Western influence on the country and we want to see just how much of an effect this is having, on not only the landscape but also Thailand's cultural heritage. We wanted to see how easy it is to find the authentic Thailand. Whether that's in its capital city or a small island off it's coastline.
Most visitors that come to the region fly into Bangkok, and that's exactly what we did. We flew from London Heathrow, where we treated ourselves to an airport lounge. Knowing we only had a short time in Bangkok before heading out to the island, we prioritised our time and booked an transfer through Holiday Extras, from Suvarnabhumi Airport to our accommodation in the city centre. Bangkok is the hub of South East Asia, during the eighties and nineties to Asian investment boom had encouraged more corporations and consequently more people to the capital. Now, around 13% of the country's population live in Bangkok, that's over 8 million people which makes the city busy, and I mean crazy busy. The traffic is insane, people are everywhere. Lights are pulsating, music blaring, exotic smells from street food vendors around the city is quite simply an assault on the senses. And for this reason, a little goes a long way in Bangkok. And just a short stopover here, can be just enough to get a taste of the city.
We've fought through the jet lag and made our way to the Pak Khlong Flower Market, the best way from our hotel was to get a taxi boat. This is something I've learnt to get used to in Bangkok. People, and busyness, everywhere - here goes! Now these boats are loud, cramped and the river can be just as busy as the roads. However, the sights are pretty impressive and it's a great way to see the city. We always recommend downloading Google Maps on any trip and Bangkok is no different. It really helps on this journey where to catch the boat from, and where to get off. The cramped conditions can make getting to the exit difficult with so many people in the way, so if you can, make your way to the end of the boat early. The market entrance is hardly spectacular but what lies ahead is an explosion of colour and smells. People are hard at work, as flowers are symbolic of Thai culture and are often used for the King's celebrations. So we've come to the Pak Klong Dalat Flower Market, flowers are a huge part of Thai culture and this market is actually open 24 hours a day and apparently, the best time to come is at 3am, when all the wholesalers bring the flowers in. Now that might seem early but if you're jet-lagged and wide awake at 3am then it could be the best place to come.
After being impressed by the flowers on show, we thought seeing them in their element would be a good idea, so we headed back up the river and made our way to the Grand Palace.

#travelThailand Coronavirus in Bangkok
I want to share my experience of my day tour at the Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha temple today. It seems like much less Chinese Tourists traveling here. I guess they’re not comfortable to travel at the moment. It makes the Grand palace today looks much more and easy to get a great photo without having anyone walk passing us.
I understand that everyone are worried about coming to travel to Thailand but you can choose where to avoid to go. Thai people also aware of ourselves. It shouldn’t be too bad if we’re all take care of ourselves. This is just my personal opinion.

Bangkok, Thailand Travel Guide: Grand Palace, Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho Tour + AMAZING Thai Food
This is our city guide and a full-day tour of Bangkok during our Thailand Trip. Most of Bangkok's notable historical and cultural sites can be seen in a day or two. We partnered with Thai Tour Guide in a six-hour tour of the city that included the Grand Palace, a private long-boat ride on the Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho and a tasty Thai food lunch.
Our tour guide, Joy and a driver picked us up in a large van to transport us the different sites in a stress-free manner. First, we head to, The Grand Palace, the cities most famous landmark. It is a complex of buildings and has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1782. Most tourists come to see Wat Phra Kaew, which houses the famous 14th century Emerald Buddha. This is Thailand's most sacred site, and out of respect, men and women, must wear long pants and shirts with sleeves. Young children are exempt from this rule.
After touring the Grand Palace, we head to the pier close by to take a long-tail boat cruise on the Chao Phraya River. Before boarding, our private boat we pick up delicious Thai ice tea, coffee, and some traditional Thai sweets. The ride from the long-tail boasts beautiful views of the Grand Palace and city skyline before heading to the traditional canals.
After the ride, we grab a quick lunch at the Krua Khun Kung at the Navy Club of Bangkok. Some of the highlights of the meal include a huge mango smoothie, Tom Yong Goong soup, and squid with salty egg.
We then make our way in the air-conditioned van to Wat Pho (Wat Po or The Temple of The Reclining Buddha), a Buddhist temple complex south of the Grand Palace. A must for any first-time visitor to Bangkok, it is famed for its giant reclining Buddha that measures 46 meters long and is completely covered in gold leaf.
The tour also included a visit to Bangkok's Flower Market, but by this time our two batteries were drained from the filming. The market is not be missed either and gives you a glimpse of the importance of flowers in Thai culture.
To learn more about Thai Tour Guide visit: We highly recommend Joy, who was not only extremely knowledgable but compassionate and accommodating to our special needs as a family with three young children.

5 things NOT to do in Thailand Travel Guide Bangkok
Thank you for watching our series on 5 things NOT to do in Thailand. This is part one. If you have any suggestions for viewers, leave a comment.
Don’t touch Monks
Monks are kind and very friendly, but there shouldn’t be physical contact. This is especially true of women. Monks are not allowed to touch women. They also cannot sit next to women. The only exceptions are the monk’s mother or if the women is in danger andneeds help.
If you wish to give alms to a monk as a female, you should use caution and use a cloth to prevent contact.
Even an accidental touch is a serious thing and requires the monk to return to the temple to performs rituals for cleansing.
You should also never stand above a monk or be positioned above a monk.
Mind Your Feet
In many Asian cultures, feet are considered a dirty part of the body. That does make sense!
With the feet being the lowest and the head the highest, some caution must be taken. The main rule is to never angle your feet toward someone. This includes sitting. This also applies to Buddha statues or images. Also, do not use your feet to open doors.
Dress Appropriately.
Despite Thailand being in the tropics, the dress code is conservative. If you are not on the beach, you shouldn’t be dressed like it. This doesn't just apply to bikinis and speedos. While the Thai’s will give some leeway to us foreigners, be extra careful if visiting temples or the Royal Palace. Here you should wear pants (for men) and dresses (for women).
As a basic rule, both sexes should cover their shoulders and knees. Ideally cover your ankles. Some temples may allow men in with longer shorts, but if at all possible please wear full length pants as a sign of respect. Remember, there is a difference between what is allowed and what is proper.
Don’t Eat from a Fork
This one is partially correct. Forks are a main utensil in Thailand, but they are used to arrange food onto your spoon and then you eat from the spoon. The fork does not touch your mouth. When a restaurant supplies a fork and spoon, the fork goes in the left hand and the spoon in the right.
What about chopstick you ask? Chopsticks are only used for noodle dishes.
Don’t Lose Your Temper
It is never ok to lose your temper in public. This is a sign of mental issues and having no class. The Buddhist culture naturally avoids conflict and places a high value on saving face.
While Thais are very good at keeping their cool, they are not used to dealing with an aggressive foreigner yelling at them. This is a leading cause of assault. Don’t be the tourist that suffers a group beating for being stupid.
On the other hand, Thais will respect someone that is able to keep their cool in an otherwise frustrating circumstance.
If you are considering Bangkok thailand, we hope this Thailand travel guide is helpful with your vacation.

The COMPLETE Bangkok Transport Guide 2019 (Co van Kessel)
The COMPLETE Bangkok Transport Guide 2018 (Co van Kessel)
In this video we will give a short summery of all the main transportation options in Bangkok. Including the Taxi, Tuk Tuk, BTS, MRT, Airport Rail Link and the Chao Phraya Express boat.
If you want to move around like a local, use the public transportation. But when do you use which option? We are here to give you a better idea of the several options in Bangkok, Thailand.
We did not include all options in Bangkok, but only the main ones used by tourists.
*
Looking for an authentic and unique adventure? Co van Kessel bike tours and boat tours provides a refreshing alternative to the tired tourist experience. We do not battle the crowds at clichéd destinations promoted in guide books, but turn your attention to quaint local communities and charming excursions into the fascinating lifestyle and culture of real Thai people. Every day is different and every tour is a surprise as we focus not on destinations, but lose ourselves in the enchantment of the journey itself.
Co van Kessel, an innovative and adventurous Dutchman, pioneered bicycle tours in Bangkok more than 30 years ago. As a longtime resident and self-professed lover of Bangkok, he understood very well the picture of accelerated urban development (gridlocked traffic, concrete towers, and choking pollution) that has plagued the recent image of the city. He also had a hunch that this was not what Bangkok or Thailand was all about.
Making it his goal to re-discover Bangkok, Co spent thousands of hours on his mountain bike exploring the vast network of local streets, alleyways, footpaths and canals between the main urban thoroughfares. What he found, lurking behind the facade of modernization, were hidden worlds of peace and tranquility, a picture of “real” Thai life that has remained unchanged for countless decades; an identity of a city that is true to the Thai people, yet largely unknown to outsiders.
Whether it’s the colorful sights and smells of the local markets, the fascinating life of locals along the canals, or the surprising existence of bountiful green belts, Co discovered the essence of what makes Bangkok one of Asia’s most captivating cities. Since then, it has been his mission to share these discoveries with the rest of the world.
What we do
Our mission at Co van Kessel Bangkok Tours is to provide our guests with a singularly unique travel experience in Thailand. All our tours use Co’s extensive topographical knowledge of the greater Bangkok area as well as his keen eye for the interesting to take you where nobody else can or will.
We aim not to bore you with talk, but to immerse you in an experience where your individual fascinations emerge.
Bicycles, boats, and our feet become the tools we use to gain access to the previously inaccessible, behind-the-scenes lifestyle of the Thai. Here the roots of an ancient culture will become evident in a way you never could have imagined.

Bangkok Private Tour Guide Grand Palace Free for Subscriber
A few weeks ago, Jamie, a subscriber from Colorado USA contacted Ta and I to say that she was coming to Thailand and would we mind showing her around Bangkok. We took a few seconds to think about it and then responded by saying “of course we can, when do you arrive?”
We told Jamie that we were in no way professional tour guides and so we wouldn’t accept any money from her for our trouble. But we did say that we would appreciate being fed when we got hungry. Haha
Jamie also surprised us with a gift of our first International couple shirts. 2 very nice t-shirts promoting Colorado. An extremely jaidee and unexpected present.
We hope that you enjoyed watching this video.

Bangkok Travel Tips: 13 Things to Know Before You Go
Things YOU need to know before YOU go to Bangkok in Thailand.
Bangkok is the bustling capital of Thailand with a population of more than 11 million. About 13% of Thailand's population lives in Bangkok. Bangkok was the world’s top tourist destination with 20 Million Tourists in 2017. Bangkok is also known as the Big Mango.
2 - Weather
Hot and Humid! Really hot and humid! Like all the time!
Daytime highs all year are in excess of 30C/86F
Bangkok holds claim to being the hottest city in the world
Not because the highs are the highest, but because it doesn’t cool down at night
Lows range from 21C to 26C ( 70F-79F )
April to October is the wet & hot season
The “cool” and dry season is November to February, like a degree or 2 less on the highs and a few degrees cooler on the lows
3. Getting In
Chances are you’ll be flying in to Bangkok, yes there are buses, and yes there’s a train, and you can take it from Singapore, but most people fly.
2 Airports
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK).
Most international flights go in to BKK
By Rail:
The Airport Rail Link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport with the BTS Skytrain system, which is Bangkok’s primary public transportation system. The City Line connects with the BTS Skytrain at Phayathai Station and costs 45 baht from Suvarnabhumi.
By Taxi:
Metered taxis are available from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok.
4. Getting Around
MRT Subway
Fare varies according to age
People don’t stand in lines. Instead of queuing up, Thais form a crowd. Stand your ground, and get used to a lack of personal space in public places.
Taxis
Notorious for ripping off tourists. Make sure they turn on the meter. It should start at 35 THB. Or download the GrabTaxi app -- like Uber, but cheaper.
Tuk Tuk
A small vehicle with no windows or doors but with a roof and a seat.
Price is always negotiated
Make sure to hold on the handles, tuk tuk drivers can be crazy drivers
Motorbike Taxis
Best to get through traffic
And come with a free massive heart attack!
5. Money
Thai Baht
1 Thai Baht was about $.03 US
Or 33 Baht to 1 USD
In Thailand, there are 1 baht, 2 baht, 5 baht, and 10 baht coins and 20 baht, 50 baht, 100 baht, and 1,000 baht notes. You may also occasionally see a 10 baht note, although those are no longer printed.
Get it from an ATM, but select “Continue Without Conversion”
6. What to wear
Linen, Rayon, or wicking/quickdry fabrics
DON’T WEAR JEANS -- you’ll combust! Also don’t wear anything lined with Polyester -- it’s as good as wearing a ziplock bag.
Temples and Palaces require you to cover your shoulders and knees.
pay attention to see if others have taken off their shoes. If so, follow suit.
7. Language
Big cities like Chiang Mai and Bangkok have a lot of locals who speak English
Sawadiikaa for females, and Sawadiikrap for males - This is the Thai greeting for hello and goodbye, and is accompanied by the wai gesture.
placing hands palms together at your chest and bowing your head
Also note that adding kaa or krap to any sentence in Thai makes the sentence more polite.
Kapkhunkaa for females, and Kapkhunkrap for males - This means thank you, and it is also often accompanied by the wai gesture.
Chuai buht meter dai mai kaa/krap? - Could you turn on the meter?
Gepdthang noi - Check please.
Mai ao - This verbatim means I'm not getting that, but can generally be used to deny an interest in purchasing anything.
Krungthep - This is the word for Bangkok in Thai. Many people mistakenly assume Bangkok is a Thai word. It's not, and knowing the real word can come in handy.
8. Shopping
9. Food
10. Bug Spray
11. Respect the King and the Royal Family
12. Don’t touch anyone on the head.
