Walking the Rice Terraces in Yuanyang
August 2011 and we travel to Yuanyang to hike along the rice terraces. Yuanyang is only reachable by long distance coach from Kunming and we decide to take the late afternoon sleeper coach. Arriving at 5am we are met by people offering us accomodation.
Unforunately our holiday has to be cut short and we only spend two days in Yuanyang but having been there once we realise that the best time to vist the area is in the late Autumn or early Spring when the scenery is more dramatic.
Anyway, have a look at the video and see what we did! Also take a look at our trip to the Longji Rice Terraces where we stayed at Ping'an and spent 5 days walking in the terraces. Hiking in the Longji Rice Terraces - Ping'an to Tian Tou and Ping'an to Old Longji.

In the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan, at over 5,000 feet elevation, lies Yuanyang. Shrouded in fog and clouds for over half the year, its vast rice terraces have been cultivated for thousands of years. Here, above the clouds, the persistence of humans and the magic of nature meet in creating breathtakingly beautiful mosaics.

On the high altitude slopes of Yunnan's southern mountains, the Hani people have, over countless generations, carved out quite possibly the most impressive mosaic of rice terraces anywhere in the world. Spanning more than a thousand meters vertically upwards from the Red River valley, and covering an area larger than New York City, the rice terraces of Yuanyang a magnificent monument to the ingenuity and perseverance of the human spirit.

Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, Yunnan, China
The Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, China covers 16,603-hectares in Southern Yunnan. It is marked by spectacular terraces that cascade down the slopes of the towering Ailao Mountains to the banks of the Hong River. Over the past 1,300 years, the Hani people have developed a complex system of channels to bring water from the forested mountaintops to the terraces. They have also created an integrated farming system that involves buffalos, cattle, ducks, fish and eel and supports the production of red rice, the area’s primary crop. The inhabitants worship the sun, moon, mountains, rivers, forests and other natural phenomena including fire. They live in 82 villages situated between the mountaintop forests and the terraces.
