2019 Kusatsu Onsen
Kusatsu Onsen (Hot Springs) located in the Gunma Prefecture is about 200 kilometers from Tokyo (about 124 miles). It was about 2.5 hours away from my in-law's home in Utsunomiya. We rented a car and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the way.
Kusatsu is ranked as Japan's #1 hot springs and boasts that it produces the greatest amount of natural hot spring water. The Yubatake (hot water fields) are a wooden facility for thermal moderation of the water, making for a unique attractive atmosphere. It is the symbol of Kusatsu.
We had a reasonably priced steak lunch at Silver Back Grill and Beer. My 1/2 lb. steak platter with rice and curry was $16 and my wife's 1/3 lb. order was $13.
We stayed at Sakurai Hotel and had easy walking access to everything. The hotel included an amazing buffet dinner and breakfast with our stay. That evening we also enjoyed the hotel festivities that included traditional summer obon dancing and taiko drumming.
During the day we attended the Yumomi show at Netsu-no-yu which highlights a unique method of stirring the hot springs waters to cool it down. The show cost about $6 for adults and $3 for children.
Right in the middle of town is Kosenji Temple. I quickly ran up the flight of stairs and took in the view and captured some great footage.
We also went to Kusatsu Tropical Wonderland (Nettaiken). It's a small zoo that is surprisingly packed with a lot of animals. I will be highlighting that in a separate video so be on the lookout for that.
Overall, Kusatsu is a beautiful place and we loved our experience. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone and hope to be back there some day soon.

Kusatsu Onsen: The Riverbed of the Underworld & Onsen Town Exploration
We're in Kusatsu Onsen again, one of the best onsen towns in Japan, in Gunma Prefecture to take a relaxing stroll through Sainokawara Park, and Sainokawara Street - two scenic spots in the onsen town.
0:20 Goza no Yu (yukata rental) (
0:51 Sainokawara Park (
1:06 Kusatsu Anamori Inari Shrine (
1:27 Matsumura Manjū (

2:20 Terako-ya rice crackers (
2:50 Ashiyu Cafe (
SAINOKAWARA PARK (Riverbed of the West)
As you walk through Sainokawara Street, you will eventually come up to a large open park of the same name with a beautiful emerald green hot spring river running through it. Due to the (1) high acidity levels in the water and it's 50°C temperature, causes the soil to be unfertile and virtually impossible for plantation to flourish, and hence has earned the nickname of Riverbed of the Underworld, or Demon's Pond - park visitors were advised not to talk loudly to not wake up the demon. The Riverbed of the Underworld is the river before the Sanzu River (equivalent to the River Styx).
The legend goes that children that pass away before their parents do are transported to Sainokawara. The children stack rocks upon another - the first rock is for the father, the second the mother, the third for their hometown. If successful, the child will be able to enter Heaven. The only problem is, is that the demons like to come out and knock the stones down. You will notice little Jizō statues (Kshitigarbha; bodhisattva who looks after children, travellers and the underworld) placed around the park to ward off the demons.

KUSATSU ONSEN-GUNMA KEN - AS MELHORES FONTES TERMAIS DO JAPAO!

Japan Walk - Kusatsu Hot Spring / Kusatsu Onsen (草津温泉) - 4K
In this video we’ll show you Kusatsu Hot Spring / Kusatsu Onsen (草津温泉) , Gunma.
Kusatsu Onsen (草津温泉) is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts and is blessed with large volumes of high quality hot spring water said to cure every illness but lovesickness.
Well known as a hot spring resort for many centuries, Kusatsu's fame was further boasted by German doctor Erwin von Baelz, who served at the imperial court in the late 1800s and recommended Kusatsu for its water's health benefits.
Kusatsu is situated at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, and offers skiing in winter and hiking during the rest of the year to be enjoyed in combination with hot spring bathing. Kusatsu is also located along Japan's Romantic Road.

Kusatsu Onsen: Retro Japanese Games & Traditional Yumomi
We go to Kusatsu Onsen, one of the best onsen towns in Japan, to experience yumomi, the traditional method of cooling down hot spring water, and try out past favorite retro Japanese games, namely the shooting gallery and smartball.

Kusatsu Onsen, a great travel destination for family and couples alike, has been chosen by Japan's top travel agents as the nation's No. 1 hot spring 16 consecutive years in the 100 Best Hot Springs in Japan ranking. This is an incredible feat.
The hot spring town is very proud of the quality of its hot spring water. Experiments have proven that e-coli bacteria cannot survive for even one minute in Kusatsu's hot spring waters, and virtually all other bacteria and fungi are unable to reproduce and thus die away. This is why Kusatsu hot spring water is reputed to have beneficial, therapeutic effects. A good hot spring is like a good doctor, and the town is proud of its century long reputation that its hot spring water can cure any ailment except a heartache.
YUMOMI at NETSU NO YU
The temperature of the Kusatsu onsen water is from 51°C to 94°C, which is too hot to bathe in. Yumomi (water stirring) is a unique traditional method of lowering the temperature to batheable levels. The water from the spring is stirred with boards that are 30 cm wide and 180cm long while singing a traditional folk song. The Yumomi performance can be seen at Netsu no Yu, located near the giant Yubatake in the center of the town. Audience members are also given the opportunity to try yumomi for themselves at select timeslots.
MANDARA-DŌ (shooting gallery)
TOMOE-YA (shooting gallery and smartball)
*Mandara-dō and Tomoe-ya are next door to one another. Both are just a 1 or 2 minute walk away from the town's center.
