Yufuin (湯布院町 Yufuin-chō) is a town located in Ōita District, Ōita Prefecture, Japan. Yufuin is now a district (町) within the city of Yufu. It’s elevation is approximately 400 meters above ground
As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 11,342 and density of 88.77 persons per km². The total area was 127.77 km².
On October 1, 2005, Yufuin, along with the towns of Hasama and Shonai (all from Ōita District), was merged to create the city of Yufu. This controversial decision resulted in the recall of the mayor and a snap election in which he regained office.
Located in a green valley beneath the spectacular Mount Yufu (由布岳), a short walk from the town centre is a mix of paddy fields, housing and upmarket ryokan, with a few temples. Mount Yufu, or Yufu-dake, can be hiked in about 90 minutes.[1] A common evening sound is the rhythmic ringing of temple bells. Although still connected to its rural roots, Yufuin is a tourist town and a popular destination for coach tours. There is a picturesque lake, and rivers flow down and across the valley. Some hotels have outdoor baths called rotenburo with a view of the mountain.
Spa town Edit
Onsen are popular among locals and tourists alike
Yufuin is famous for natural hot spring spas (温泉 Onsen), resulting in a local economy based on domestic tourism, gift shops and hot-spring bathing. Some onsen are available to tourists, but many remain strictly for locals.[2] International tourist visits to Yufuin are increasing, especially Koreans.

A stone bridge in the Innai , was supported by a skilled mason
Oita prefecture is known for having the largest number of stone bridges in Japan, and in Innai Town, Usa City, there are 75 stone bridges preserved. 64 of these bridges are arch (spectacle) bridges, the largest number found in any one town in the whole of Japan.
There are many reasons why there are so many stone bridges in this area. One reason is that the topography of the region is characterized by a deep ravine with such swift rapids that the local people needed to build robust bridges which wouldn’t wash away.
A second reason was that there was an abundance of the stones necessary for the construction of the bridges in quarries in the area. Finally, there were also many skilled stonemasons who were experienced in building stonewalls and walls around the vital rice fields. One of the most famous of these stonemasons was Shinnosuke Matsuda, known as “the king of stone bridges”, who learnt the art of designing arch bridges in Kansai. He returned to the area in 1897 and built 14 stone bridges, 11 of which are still standing, including the famous Torii-bashi bridge. There are also several of his bridges remaining in neighboring Ajimu and Honyabakei Towns.
(Torii-Bashi Bridge) (Illuminated at night)
(Designated a Prefectural Tangible Cultural Asset)
Torii-Bashi, a 5 span arch bridge, is one of the most famous of the 75 stone bridges in Innai Town. The small villages dotted deep in the valley are connected by this 5 arched bridge. The bridge is also known as “Ishibashi bashi no Kifujin” or “The bridge of ladies” due to the graceful image of an elegant pontoon bridge stretching up to heaven.Constructed by the famous stonemason Shinnosuke Matsuda, the bridge was completed in July 1916. The fact that it has withstood many heavy floods is a credit to the detailed design and engineering skills with which it was built.
The bridge is lit up until 10 o’clock each night, and you can see a mysterious side to the bridge that differs from the daytime.
(Mikutsu-bashi bridge) (Illuminated at night)
(Designated a Prefectural Tangible Cultural Asset)
With a length of 59m, this triple arched stone bridge is the longest in the town. Completed in 1925, the sight of the bridge standing firmly in the furious, erosive rapids of the south to north flowing Era River gives a sense of strength and shows the modern taste and elegance of the time. Its reflection in the river surface is also a magical sight.
(Arase-bashi bridge) (Illuminated at night)
(Designated a Municipal Tangible Cultural Asset)
The highest and most beautiful of all the double-arched “spectacle” bridges in the town. Looking up at the bridge from the park at its base you can see the gentle mountains in the background through the arches.
(Fujimi-bashi bridge)
(Designated a Municipal Tangible Cultural Asset)
The name given to this bridge came about because Mt. Yufu, a Mt. Fuji lookalike, can be seen when standing on top of the bridge. The bridge collapsed half way through construction. However, the conviction and willpower of master craftsman Shinnosuke Matsuda led to a second attempt at construction, and it is said that using his own private funds the bridge was successfully completed the following year.
(Buji-bashi bridge) (Illuminated at night)
(Designated a Municipal Tangible Cultural Asset)
Comparatively new within the town, this triple-arched bridge was completed in 1945. Despite being constructed in the midst of the war, the symmetrically engraved stones are neatly stacked.

Short trip to YULI in Hualien County
After having fun at Ruisui (see previous video) we went further south to visit a farm where you can learn how to make scones and wheat beer, had lunch at the Yuli Noodles restaurant, and then went bicycling on the Yufu Bikeway. We saw a LOT of rapeseed flower fields. :)

Yuli
From Ruisui it’s a short drive south on Provincial Highway 9 or County Road 193 to Yuli Township. The latter is favored by seasoned cyclists doing round-the-island or just East Rift Valley rides who prefer to take a more scenic and quieter road. It also offers more shade, thanks to the many roadside trees. In addition, the road has numerous vantage points from which you can take in the marvelous scenery of bright green and yellow fields and the majestic views of the central mountains on the opposite side of the valley.
Shortly before reaching the Yuli Bridge, which traverses the Xiuguluan River and connects to Highway 9 and central Yuli, you come to the Dongfeng Leisure Agricultural Area, a multipurpose farm where visitors can try their hand at such fun as making scones and brewing wheat beer using ingredients grown on the farm’s fields. Creating the small-sized scones, made with eggs, butter, and flour from the area, takes about an hour under the staff’s expert tutelage, and making the beer, a crisp, pleasing wheat ale, takes around three.
The farm was started as a rice operation 20 years ago, with pomelos also grown, but today the focus is mostly on wheat, four varieties of rice, two different kinds of beans, and a small fertilizer factory catering to local farmers looking to further enrich the already fertile soil. The factory and the fields can be toured; the wheat fields are a rare sight in subtropical Taiwan.
The East Rift Valley is well known for its fantastic cycling paths, one of the most popular being the Yufu Bikeway. Close to Yuli Railway Station are a number of bike-rental operations which rent bicycles for NT$100/4hrs, and e-bikes for NT$300 for the same amount of time. The roughly 10-kilometer stretch of paved pathway runs from Yuli Railway Station to the old railway station at the village of Dongli, following an abandoned railway line, winding among rice paddies, fields, and irrigation ponds.
About two kilometers into the ride the bikeway crosses the Xiuguluan River and the fault line dividing the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates, traversing a railway bridge that had to be retired because of the slowly shifting land below, the work of primal tectonic forces churning many kilometers underground. Stop at the midpoint of the bridge and place your feet at a clearly marked spot that allows you to, approximately, stand with one foot on the first tectonic plate and the other on the second.
Riding along the bikeway is a great way to take in the land that is eastern Taiwan’s largest rice granary, much of the crop grown here bound for export to Japan. During the seasons of the year the views are markedly different, ranging from seas of golden rice ears to fields of bright-yellow rapeseed.
Along the pathway you will pass the platforms of two old railway stations, at Antong and Dongli, the latter marking the southern end of the bikeway. Adjacent to Dongli’s old platform, a very popular Instagram spot, is a small café where you can stop and relax, have a cup of coffee, and perhaps pick up a small locally-made souvenir before heading back to Yuli.
If you have worked up an appetite on your return to central Yuli, consider dining at the Yuli Noodles restaurant, a popular no-frills eatery serving generous portions of noodles, either dry or in soup, topped with slices of pork, celery, and bean sprouts.

Another natural landmark of Yufuin besides Mount Yufu is Lake Kinrinko. The small lake is located at the end of the town's main walking route, about a kilometer and a half from the station. Walking paths surround the lake as well as more small shops and cafes, and there is a small shrine located at the lake's southern end. There are also a few public bath houses, one of which, the Shitanyu, can be used by tourists, while the others are for use by local residents only.
Below is a list of some of Yufuin's best baths:
