Nagorno Karabach - Shusha - Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque
Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque (Azerbaijani: Aşağı Gövhər ağa məscidi) is an Azerbaijani mosque located in Shusha, Karabakh region of Azerbaijan about 350 km from capital Baku but is currently under control of Armenian forces since the occupation of Shusha on May 8, 1992.
The Ashaghi Govhar Agha means The Lower Govhar Agha Mosque in Azerbaijani language referring to location of the mosque in the lower section of Shusha town and to distinguish it from the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, the same-name mosque located in upper section of the town. Both mosques are considered symbols of Shusha and masterpieces of Eastern architecture. Construction of Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque was completed with orders of Govhar Agha, daughter of Ibrahim Khalil Khan of Karabakh Khanate approximately 8 years before the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque was built.[5] The difference between the Ashaghi Govhar Agha with Yukhari Govhar Agha is that the minarets of the former mosque are located in the corners of the rear facade unlike the Yukhari Govhar Agha mosque where the minarets are on the front facade.

???? 360° GoPro Omni VR: Abandoned Great Mosque | Shushi, Nagorno-Karabakh ???????? ????????
A 360° GoPro VR video of the Great Mosque of Shushi - a.k.a. the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque. It was one of the finest pieces of Shia architecture in the region until the conflict saw it fall into a state of abandon and disrepair, as a result of the fighting and vandalism. It was captured by Armenian forces in 1992 and is currently nothing more than a shell of its former self, though (controversial) renovation plans by the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh government are afoot!
The political status of the Nagorno-Karabakh region remains unresolved. Since 1991, it has been largely controlled by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, a de facto independent entity. The region, however, is internationally recognized as de jure part of Azerbaijan, although it has not exercised power over most of the region since 1991. Since the end of the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 1994, representatives of the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group on the region's disputed status.

???? Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque | Shushi, Nagorno-Karabakh | 02:06
Referring to its location, its name translates from Azerbaijani to The Upper Govhar Agha Mosque (distinguishing it from the Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque, the same-name mosque located in lower section of the town). Both mosques are considered symbols of Shusha and masterpiece of Eastern architecture.
The Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque is located on Shusha's main square, Yusif Vazir Chamanzaminli street and makes up a big part of an architectural complex that includes a madrasa, shops and houses built by the same architect. Construction of the mosque was started with orders of Ibrahim Khalil Khan in 1768 (1182 according to Islamic calendar) but was stopped for a long time. The construction was then restarted and completed in 1883–1885 by the architect Karbalayi Safikhan Karabakhi ordered by Govhar Agha, daughter of Ibrahim Khalil Khan. Today, it lies in disrepair due to the ongoing conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Also transliterated as Char Minar, this photogenic little mosque nestles in a maze of alleys between Pushkin and Hoja Nurabad, bearing more relation to Indian styles than to anything Bukharan. This was the gatehouse of a long-gone medressa built in 1807. The name means ‘Four Minarets’ in Tajik, although they aren’t strictly speaking minarets but rather decorative towers.

Shusha Шуша Карабах
Shusha ancient city of Azerbaijan
Nagorno Karabach - Shushi castle
Shusha (Azerbaijani: Şuşa; Russian: Шуша), or Shushi (Armenian: Շուշի), is a city in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh in the South Caucasus. It has been under the control of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic since its capture in 1992 during the Nagorno-Karabakh War. However, it is a de jure part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the status of an administrative division of the surrounding Shusha Rayon. Situated at an altitude of 1,400–1,800 metres (4,600–5,900 ft) in the picturesque Karabakh mountains, Shusha was a popular mountain recreation resort in the Soviet era.
According to some sources the town of Shusha was founded in 1752 by Panah Ali Khan.[3][4][5] Other sources suggest that Shusha served as a town and an ancient fortress in the Armenian principality of Varanda during the Middle Ages and through the 18th century.[6][7][8][9] From the mid-18th century to 1822 Shusha was the capital of the Karabakh Khanate. The town became one of the cultural centers of the South Caucasus after the Russian conquest of the Caucasus region in the first half of the 19th century over Qajar Iran.[10] Over time, it became a city and a home to many Azerbaijani intellectuals, poets, writers and especially, musicians (e.g., the ashiks, mugham singers, kobuz players).[11][12]
Along with Tbilisi; it was one of the two main Armenian cities of the Transcaucasus and the center of a self-governing Armenian principality from medieval times through the 1750s.[13] It also had religious and strategic importance to the Armenians, housing the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, the church of Kanach Zham, two other churches, a monastic convent, and serving (along with Lachin district to the west) as a land link to Armenia.
Throughout modern history the city mainly fostered a mixed Armenian–Azerbaijani population. Following the Shusha massacre in 1920 by Azerbaijani forces and their Turkish supporters, the Armenian half of the population of the city was mostly killed or expelled, and the city reduced to a town with a dominant Azerbaijani population. After the capture of Shusha in 1992 by Armenian forces, its population diminished dramatically again and is now almost exclusively Armenian.

Shushi Massacres
The massacres took place on March 22-26, 1920, and resulted in more than 20,000 Armenian deaths and the destruction of Shushi.
The massacre of Armenians in Shushi in 1920 is nothing but a genocide, Chairman of the parliamentary Commission for Foreign Relations of Karabakh, Vahram Atanesyan, said at a press-conference today. He said the massacre was perpetrated by Azerbaijan with the support of the Turkish expeditionary corps. Atanesyan stressed that Karabakh has never been a part of Azerbaijan and was de facto independent at that moment, its status being recognized by Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

EPISODE 1 OF VR CITY TOURS: SHUSHI ???? ???????? ???????? | A NEW VR CITY TOUR EPISODE EVERY TUESDAY
Shushi (Şuşa to Azeris) stands on a plateau 9km from Stepanakert, with high walls and views over a wide swath of central Karabakh. The city was once a centre of Armenian and Azeri art and culture, and during the 19th century it was one of the largest towns in the South Caucasus with a multicultural population and a reputation for tolerance and peaceful coexistence. The city suffered badly during the war and much of its population left, but recovery has been under way for some time now. There are some excellent B&Bs in town, so if you want to experience village life in Karabakh consider spending a couple of nights up here, as it makes a good base for exploring the rest of the region.
