Tourism operators in Hualien promote hot springs tour bus, holiday packages
As the weather gradually gets cooler, Taiwan will soon enter the hot spring season. Tourism operators in Hualien are now promoting a hot springs tour bus. People taking part can, in the span of one day, bathe in hot springs and also visit Hualien''s scenic spots. There are also three-day, two-night hot spring packages at reasonable costs. Taiwan’s hot springs season begins in Autumn. Tourists in Hualien’s Yuli and Ruisui townships have increased markedly. The hot springs in Ruisui Township are rich in iron and when you bathe in them, your skin immediately becomes smooth and soft. In addition, Antong Hot Springs in Yuli is similarly very popular with tourists. Even foreigners are deeply fascinated. LindaGerman Foreign StudentI think Antong’s hot springs are extremely good because there are very few people here. The scenery here is really very, very beautiful. Starting in October, to coordinate with a display of fireworks in Hualien for National Day, operators of local hot spring spots are promoting a hot spring tour bus. With a hop on the bus, tourists can experience hot springs and also ecotourism. Pan Yueh-hsiaYuli Antong Hot Springs Association I am extremely grateful to our county government and our Hualien Tourism Association for doing their utmost to promote our Antong Hot Springs area. They’ve been doing this continuously. This is the third year. In addition to the hot springs tour bus, some in the industry are promoting a three-day, two-night package tour that includes a domestic round-trip airfare and two night accommodation at less than NT$4000 per person.

One of the things Hualien is known for is its dairy farms.
Michella Jade Weng, Presenter:
Recently in Hualien, there are four scents that are especially popular. One of them - the scent of fresh milk.
Fan Ji-ming, Dairy farmer:
Usually milk is pasteurized at high temperature, but we do it at a lower temperature - 65 degrees Celcius. This keeps more of the protein and lactoferrin from being destroyed. Lactoferrin is good for the immune system.
If you're hungry and feeling adventurous, the raw milk hot pot at this farm is worth a try.
Fan Ji-ming, Dairy farmer:
You can taste what milk is really like. It's higher in fat content and there is a grassy hint to the aroma.
Mm, smells like coffee. Did you know that in addition to tea, coffee has been farmed in Hualien since the Japanese occupation a century ago?
When you come to the Wuhe area, not only can you drink or buy locally-produced coffee, like this little boy, you can also learn how roast it.
Angel Chen, Hualien coffee expert:
The ones with only one bean is called single bean, or peaberry.
This one.
Yes.
The process of roasting is really caramelization.
Following an afternoon of coffee making, some people like to head for the hot springs in the evening.
This is Antong, and the springs here are of a faint alkaline, chloride and sodium sulphate quality.
Leo Cheng, Hualien travel expert:
It was discovered by the Japanese early on. It smells of sulphur a little bit. In the rest of Taiwan, when it smells this way, the water is usually a bit milky, but here it's clear. We've been soaking here so long and we've noticed that it really makes your skin nice.
If you follow your nose when in Hualien, you might find your travels here a feast of scents.

1128 #95 Hulien Sediq Celebrate Recognition
Some one thousands Sediq people from Hualien's Siulin, Wanrung and Zhuoxi and Nantou's Renai Township gathered in Siulin Township's Qougan Community to celebrate the recognition of Sediq tribe. Nine hunters shot their rifles towards the sky, and the members prepared pigs as offerings to tell their ancestors that they have reclaimed the ancestors'
An early morning at SIXTY STONE MOUNTAIN, Hualien (花蓮六十石山)
In this short video I visit the well-known Sixty Stone Mountain in southern Hualien County early in the morning. Very pretty scenery, even before the day lily season started.

From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2014-05-06:
By Rick Charette
South of Antong Hot Springs, Sixty Stone (Liushidan) Mountain overlooks the East Rift Valley floor, its peak about 800 meters above sea level. A 300/400-hectare tableland of day lilies carpets its top, blooming in spectacular fashion August~September, with the paddy-grid far below a unique backdrop. I’ve been on the mountain when the big orange show is on, and it really is a thrill; on this trip, however, we found ourselves wrapped up in thick, rolling mists, which though not what we’d come for was nevertheless wonderfully rewarding aesthetically, creating myriad artistic shanshui-painting-style canvases for eye and camera. Chike Mountain, northeast of Yuli, is also known for lovely day lily vistas.

Lameru Macaw and Abby Wang, Cilamitay
Hopineo presents Lameru Macaw and Abby Wang from the Cilamitay community in Fuli Township.
Cilamitay offers various tour options for guests to experience the local culture and farming techniques, including visits to the beautiful rice terrasses and the 100-year-old water canalisation system. The views are incredible, the locals extremely friendly, don't miss this great activity in Taiwan!
Hualien Scent Trail.mpg
Hiking in Hualien, sometimes one will find more than just waterfalls and majestic views. There are lots of stories to be found too.
This is the Yuli section of Batongguan Trail. It's called Walami, meaning fern in Bunun language.
Leo Cheng, Hualien travel expert
When the Chinese came to Taiwan, they opened this path to eastern Taiwan, so this trail is very old, about 100 years old. After the Japanese came, there was a violent clash with the Bunun. So from here to Dongpu, there are about 10 police stations. You can still see what's left of the buildings.
Speaking of the occupation, what is now the Linshantien Forestry Cultural Park was also built by the Japanese.
Hello everyone. Welcome to Morisaka.
Chen Guo-chang, Linsentien
This used to be a logging village. Cypress from here was either exported or used in the military. At one point in the old days, there were about 2,000 workers here. These days we're using what's left of the resources for wood carving.
The theme of these carvings revolve around ecology, indigenous culture and forestry culture. Visitors are free to observe master carvers work on their craft and to look at award winning pieces from previous competitions. Some say that this could be the Sanyi of eastern Taiwan.
For a good meal, many people recommend this Amis restaurant. The specialty here is soup boiled with hot rocks.
Even the bowl is quite different - it's a betelnut tree leaf folded up and held together by two skewers.
A natural meal to finish off a day close to nature - a suitable ending, wouldn't you say?
