An animal-loving secluded island called Holbox, MX
Holbox is a small town within a Nature Reserve called Yum Balam and the home of colorful house walls turned into magical pieces of art, 7 to 12 meter whale sharks, streets covered in the softest white sand, clear blue waters, an animal shelter called Refugio Holbox, and, last but not least, Posada Mawimbi…the beautiful 11-bedroom boutique hotel I had the pleasure of staying at. From the minute I arrived in Holbox, was welcomed by a dozen yellow golf carts with signs that read “Taxi” and realized I was surrounded by local people instead of tourists, I knew this trip was off to an wonderful start. 5 minutes down a sandy road was Posada Mawimbi, a beach front paradise carefully designed using products and techniques of the ancient Mayan culture. Absolutely stunning! Raw details in every corner, vegetarian and vegan food options, and the most delicious blueberry daiquiris. Read more on the blog: waterthruskin.com

Isla Holbox (hol-bosh) has sandy streets, colorful Caribbean buildings, lazing, sun-drunk dogs, and sand so fine its texture is nearly clay. The greenish waters are a unique color from the mixing of ocean currents, and on land there's a mixing too: of locals and tourists, the latter hoping to escape the hubbub of Cancún.
'Hoping' is the operative word, because while there are no throbbing nightclubs here, and while it's beautiful, it's not exactly peaceful (what with the throngs of people and constant buzzing of noisy gasoline-powered golf carts), unless you really do get away from it all to the more remote beaches either by golf cart or boat.

Isla Holbox
During my time backpacking the Yucatan, peninsula in Mexico, my friend and I decided to make a stop in Isla Holbox after leaving Valladolid. It was a spontaneous trip, and we hadn't done much research on this island, but while I was there I noticed there wasn't a single car. Imagine an island with no cars, hammocks on the water, and plenty awesome hostels. We also had the awesome pleasure of meeting out friend Katie back in Merida, Yucantan and we all clicked well enough that we decided to travel together. After having spent time here, I always recommend my friends go visit on their travels to Cancun.

A small airline, Aerosaab, flies tours to Holbox from Cancún and Playa del Carmen; there is even a small airstrip to accommodate Aerosaab's five-seater Cessna aircraft.
The entrance of vehicles is not allowed at Holbox in order to protect the environment and to prevent the streets from getting sand.
Holbox has several alternatives to enjoy nature, but the one that attracts most visitors is the experience of swimming with the impressive whale shark from June to September, an opportunity you can experience in very few parts of the world.
Another alternative is “Isla Pájaros” (Bird Island), a small island covered in mangrove swamps and cacti, located on the Yalahau lagoon, where there is a large diversity of birds. As some of them are endangered species, two observation points and walkways are provided to minimize the direct contact with the birds. Flamingos, cormorants, herons, frigate birds, pelicans, wild ducks and seagulls among other species can be observed here in their natural environment.
