With district headquarters in Mangan, North Sikkim is the seventh least populous district in the country. The high altitude makes it hard to sustain life as we move further north. North Sikkim shares a sensitive border with the China and Indian Army eavily patrols the area. Therefore, entry is only possible on a guided tour that can be arranged in Gangtok.
Zero point Also known as Yumesamdong, Zero point Sikkim stands at an altitude of 15,300 feet above mean sea level (23 km’s from Yumthang Valley) and is the last outpost of civilization. The road ends here!!! The drive from Yumthang Valley to Zero Pointis through the curving mountainous amidst the rugged piece of land of geographic region and could be a lifetime experience.
Zero Point Sikkim is the place where three rivers meet with snow-clad mountains in the vicinity offering some thrilling views. Zero Point as it remains snow covered for the most of the year, due to the high altitude of Zero Point, oxygen in the air is low and there can be breathing problems for few. Since the place is in a short distance to the international border between India and China, a special permission is required to go to Zero Point Sikkim and the driver may charge few additional INR for the same.
The best season for visiting Yumthang Valley, Lachung and Zero Point Sikkim starts in late February and continues up to mid-June, when thousands of colorful flowers are in full bloom. If you are really looking for a place which resembles Heaven, it is North Sikkim!!!!

Zero Point | Second Switzerland | North Sikkim (4K)
The best destination to start this tour is Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The tour to Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point just needs an overnight stay and you can return to Gangtok the next day.
There are two ways split out from the city of Chungthang city – one for the Lachen and one for the Lachung. The Lachen is known as the big pass, whereas Lachung is known as the small pass. If you want to go to Lachung then keep moving on the road to Lachung. Lachung is a small village situated in the lap of the mountain at an altitude of 8610 ft. The distance of this village from Gangtok is around 118 km but it will take around 6 hours drive to reach here from the capital as the road is in hilly terrain which is not smooth like roads in plain terrain. And also being a village road, the condition of the road is not so good. The way to Lachung is along the river Teesta and your journey will be in the pleasant surroundings as the numerous waterfalls and mountain springs will welcome you on the way.
However, most of the tourists stay at this place for the night and move on the next morning to visit the Yumthang Valley and Zero Point and then return to Gangtok. The Zero Point, which is located about 23 km from Yumthang and at an altitude of above 15000 ft. The place is also known as Yume Samdong and it will take around 1.5 hours drive to reach here from Yumthang. The name of this place is Zero Point because this is the place where civilian road ends and civilians are not allowed to drive any further from this point.
However, the road from Yumthang to Zero Point is quite bad and the journey is tiresome but it is worth traveling for the reward that you will get at the end. The reward was beyond your imagination. The view is just breathtaking – the snow-clad mountain peaks and the convergence of the three rivers turn this place simply into a visual delight.
Note: As the Zero Point is located at the very high altitude, so there is less oxygen in the air and it may cause some trouble in breathing. However, it is not a problem for a healthy person, but the tourists with infants or people with breathing problem should avoid visiting the Zero Point.
How to Reach Lachung, Yumthang Valley and Zero Point : The vehicles which are registered with the department of Sikkim Tourism are allowed to take tourist to these places. Furthermore, there is an additional charge for visiting Zero Point. It is better to hire the service of an authorized tour operator of Sikkim. You can take the tour package that includes all the three places in their itinerary. When it comes to finalizing the itinerary, I would suggest to first reach Lachung and then start early in the morning for the Zero Point directly. First, visit Zero Point because of its varying weather condition and in the morning you will get better visibility than in the afternoon. So, first visit Zero Point from the Lachung and then visit the Yumthang Valley
Arranging Permits The tourists need to get the protected area permits (PAP) to visit Lachung/ Yumthang/ Zero Point as these places are nearby the international border of China and thus are under the control of the Indian Army. The permits can be obtained from the Gangtok Tourism Office, District Administrative Center at Mangan, or at Chungthang Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s Office. If you will take the package you’re your tour operator will arrange these permits for you.
What to carry As all these places are in the mountain region and a cold destination, so taking some warm clothes with you will be enough. But while visiting the Zero Point for the snow you must take an overcoat, a pair of gloves and snow boots which you can hire from the Yumthang market. You should carry cash while traveling these areas as there are no ATMs there. Also, carry all the necessary medication with you, especially, medicine for the high altitude sickness.
Cost :
We took a tour package from a travel Agency (Gangtok) which is a 2 nights and 3 days package including :
1st Day (Gangtok - Lachung), Night stay at Lachung
2nd Day (Lachung - Yumthang Valley - Lachen), Night stay at Lachen
3rd Day (Lachen - Gurudwara Lake - Gangtok) Back to Gangtok
Which also includes (Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner-night stay at Hotel).
It cost 3,500 rupees per Head.
But Remember, If you want to visit Zero Point than you have to pay extra charges per head. We gave the driver total approx. 3500 rupees for 9 people i.e. Per head 380/-

SIKKIM VLOG 3 | North Sikkim | Zero Point | Yumthang Valley | Mount Katao | Lachung | Yumesamdong
North Sikkim is a district of the Indian state of Sikkim. Its district headquarters is Mangan. It is the seventh least populous district in the country. The district is the largest of the four districts of Sikkim. The landscape is mountainous with dense vegetation all the way up to the alpine altitude before thinning out to desert scrub towards the northern tundra. Numerous waterfalls astride the main road make the trip to this district extremely picturesque. Most of the people of the state reside near Mangan, the district headquarters which is about 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level. Temperatures range from about 25° to below −40° in the extreme high reaches where the altitude is in excess of 6,000 metres. Most of North Sikkim is restricted to travellers and permits are needed to visit these areas. The area, which shares a sensitive border with the People’s Republic of China, is heavily patrolled by the Indian army. However, in view of exquisite scenic beauty, a large number of tourists have started visiting the region overcoming all sorts of hardship. Often unregulated tourism becomes a major conservation issue in fragile ecosystem such as high mountains.
