Onsen hot springs expand horizons

Hot spring resorts are one of the major tourist destinations in Japan. But the number of visitors has recently been declining. This has prompted operators to look for alternative business opportunities.

This hot spring town in western Japan has a history of over 1,200 years.

But recently, there’s something that is cause for concern at Yumura Onsen.

We’ve been having fewer visitors. That directly affects local businesses, and stores are closing down.

The number of tourists peaked 15 years ago, but has fallen to about two-thirds. The town is working with stores to tackle the problem.

This is condensed milk. It’s caramelized after 10 hours in here. I use it to make cake.

The onsen-made caramel is an ingredient for French almond cake, a product he started offering last month. He sells as many as 100 pieces on a busy day.

A store is seeing business pick up since putting this beer on its menu three years ago.

In another part of central Japan, an onsen hotel is targeting Chinese tourists.

It offers them water walking programs in a hot-spring pool, with a Chinese interpreter on hand.

Chinese tourists are eager to exercise for their health.

A Shanghai company bought the town’s struggling facility last year. It has attracted about 1,000 Chinese visitors over the past year and business is starting to turn around.

The hotel hopes to lure Japanese tourists as well.

Onsen towns are coming up with creative ideas to regain popularity among tourists from Japan and abroad.

In the middle of Shinonsen, Hyogo lies a small
town called Yumura. Each year, locals and
visitors gather to celebrate the founding of
the town and to pray for the health of their
children. The festival culminates with an
intense, single round of tug of war using a
massive, 4-ton rope.

Tug of war Japan-Shinonsen 湯村温泉まつり大菖蒲綱引き 4k

湯村温泉まつりの大菖蒲綱引は、湯村温泉の開祖、慈覚(じかく)大師を偲び、旧暦の端午の節句に行われる伝統行事で、まつり前日に町民が朝から集まり、｢せ～んこによりかけ、よ～りかけ、よ～りかけ｣と音頭を出しながら、玉縄６００束・菖蒲３００束を縄に編んでゆきます。
大綱は日が暮れようとする時完成し、菖蒲大綱は町内を練り歩きながら、上組､下組と２本に分けて蛇がとぐろを巻いたように安置されます。

菖蒲大綱引きは、直径約５０センチ、長さ１００メートル、重さ４トンの大綱を住民や観光客が引き合います。
勝運を占うものとして大変縁起が良いとされています。
別名「花湯まつり」ともいわれ、菖蒲を浴槽の中に入れ、無病息災を祈り、香り高い菖蒲湯を楽しみます。

【新温泉町】湯村温泉まつり R1.6.2午前

令和元年6月2日 兵庫県新温泉町の湯村温泉にて

湯村温泉の開祖・慈覚大師への感謝と子供の健やかな成長を願い、700年以上前から行われているお祭りです。
午前中には稚児行列や神輿などが行われますが、夕方には長さ約100m、重さ約4t、直径が50～60cmにもなる菖蒲綱引きが行われます。
