Major tunnel completed on rail line linking China, Laos
Major tunnel construction on a rail line linking China and Laos has been completed. The Huangzhulin tunnel is on the China section of the 508-kilometer Yuxi-Mohan railway, a joint venture between the two countries. Construction of the tunnel, which consists of three parts that go through hills, began in 2016. It is situated on sharp mountain curves prone to cave-ins. The project was promoted by the leaders of China and Laos as a way to initiate more interconnectivity projects under the Belt and Road Initiative. Once completed, the operating speed along the route will be about 160 km per hour.

Chongqing, referred to as Yu. [1] [2] is a provincial-level administrative region, the only municipality in the central and western regions, a national central city [3], a megacity, an international metropolis, and an economic, financial, scientific and technological innovation, shipping, and commerce and logistics center in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, [4] The important strategic fulcrum of the western development, the important connection point of the “Belt and Road” and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, as well as the inland open highlands, beautiful mountains and clear waters; [5] [2] is known as both Jiangcheng, Wudu, and Bridge, and also known as Mountain City Famous. [6] Chongqing is located in the southwestern part of China, with a total area of 82,400 square kilometers and 38 districts (counties, autonomous counties) under its jurisdiction. Chongqing is a comprehensive transportation hub in the southwest of China that integrates east and west and connects North and South. Its Jiangbei Airport is one of the top ten airports in China's inland, and the Orchard Port is the largest river-rail public water port area in China. [15] Chongqing is located in the eastern part of the basin. The terrain slopes from north to south to the Yangtze River valley. The landform is dominated by hills and mountains, and its mountainous area accounts for 76%. The Yangtze River traverses the territory from west to east with a flow of 691 kilometers. [16]

Lào Cai ( listen) is a city in northeastern Vietnam. It is the capital of Lào Cai province. The city borders the city of Hekou Yao Autonomous County, in the Yunnan province of Southwest China. It lies at the junction of the Red River (Sông Hồng) and the Nanxi River (Yunnan) approximately 160 miles (260 km) northwest of Hanoi.[1]
It is a market town for timber, and the Lao Cai Railway Station is located on the Hải Phòng railway to Yunnan Province in China.
The town was invaded by the Chinese in 1979 and the border was closed and not reopened until 1993.[2][3] The town has a carbide factory. As of 2003 the district had a population of 86,855.[4] The district covers an area of 223 km².[4]

4. Silver ornaments
I am Cheng Yuxi, Scarlett, a member of the Miao ethnicity in China. As a minority group in southern China, the Miao have a long and fascinating history. One interesting cultural aspect is that the Miao people rarely record their history in writing; rather, they use an oral tradition to pass on their history and culture. This past summer, I visited Dawan, my hometown, to explore the Miao culture, my culture, in more depth, and came away with incredible and engaging results to share.
The record has 8 sections, the stockade village, faith, Miao embroidery, silver, food, wine, folksong, and Miao people.
Following, I have provided text of my video recordings of the silver section.
Cheng Yuxi:
Silver ornaments, as their name suggests, is made of silver. They have a very prominent position in the Miao people’s daily dress as well as in their weddings and funerals.
In the Miao nationality, silver ornaments include all types of ornaments, categorized into bracelets, rings, front chains, back chains, collars, phoenix crowns, etc. In ancient times, the silver ornaments were used as dowries, signaling the affluence of a family.
The production process of silver ornaments is very meticulous. Firstly, the silver is melted, then poured into long bars and rinsed with acid water. After that, the irregular silver bars are manually hammered into round bars to make bracelets or other ornaments. The meticulousness of the production process is reflected in the hammering aspect. Regardless of how irregular the shapes of the original silver bars are, the silversmith can always hammer them into shape. For example, the silver bar used to make a bracelet is at first approximately square-shaped. After countless hammering and measuring, it finally becomes a round strip. It is worth mentioning that although there are already molds which can be used to directly form perfect silver bars, the older generation of craftsmen still insist on hammering silver bars manually. When asked why they persist in such manual labor, their answer is that “only the hand-made silver bars are unique, while those made with the molds are all the same.”
When I heard of such a production process, I became more interested in the history of silver ornaments. Why have silver ornaments become a symbol of the Miao nationality, instead of gold or jade ornaments?
I have invited the Miao culture expert and translator of the Miao language, Professor Long Zhixian, to tell of the history of silver ornaments.
Long Zhixian:
From the perspective of historical development, after the Chu State was destroyed by the Qin Dynasty, the entire Miao nationality was torn apart. Our branch travelled around the Dongting Lake and Wuling Mountain, and migrated here from Xiangxi following the moving water. At that time, many people would not want to take too many things on the journey, so they had the women wear the silver ornaments which symbolized the wealth of the family, and continued to migrate in this way. According to my research, the reason the Miao people knew of silver as a valuable metal and used it to decorate their lives and costumes, is that we originally came from within the court.

8. Miao people

This past summer, I visited Dawan, my hometown, to explore the Miao culture, my culture, in more depth, and came away with incredible and engaging results to share.

Cheng Yuxi:
Dawan is a small village located in Panxin Town, Songtao County, Tongren City, Guizhou Province. The villagers share a common ancestor whose surname was “Teng”, and more than 90% of the villagers are surnamed “Teng”. They have superbly preserved the lifestyle, architecture, and customs of the Miao people. At the same time, Dawan is also my hometown, the place where my ancestors have lived since the middle of the Ming Dynasty and the place where my mother grew up. Before this visit, my impression of Dawan had been frozen in time in my memories of when I was three or four years old, but during this trip, I deeply experienced the Dawan people’s pride in their Miao identity and saw a different side of life through interviewing them.
When I interviewed a granny aged nearly 70 years old, she expressed great satisfaction with the current life in the village.
Granny's interview:
The village has become better. With electric power and a water supply, our living condition is now extremely good! We had a tough time in the past, and all five children in our family could only make a living by making tofu.
When I heard this answer, I couldn't help but think of my life. Having electric power and a water supply are only basic living conditions in the city, but in the eyes of this Miao granny, these are great blessings. When I asked the granny how she feels about the Miao nationality, she smiled and said with earnest eyes, “I am not good at expressing myself, but I love the Miao nationality. My family are all Miao, and we hold a great affection for this land.”
I also interviewed several children in the village and witnessed their steadfast love for Dawan. Next is a clip from the interview.

During the interview, one answer made a deep impression on me. When I asked what does the Miao nationality mean to you, a child answered without hesitation: something that makes me proud.
During this experience, I felt the ardor of the Miao people for their hometown, and once again renewed a feeling of pride in my identity, a sense of anticipation for my hometown, and a satisfaction towards life.
