Japan: Inari-jinja Shrine at Ikejiri, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo (4/4) 2011-12-22(Thu)1347hrs
The Ikejiri Inari Shrine was founded during the Meireki years (1655-57) under the Tokugawa Shogunate's rule (1603-1868). It is located along the old Oyama Highway for those pilgrims going further westwards from Edo (or Yedo, i.e. today's Eastern Tokyo) on foot. It was built as the representative place of worship that was believed to magically prevent fire for the two neighbouring villages of Ikejiri and Ikezawa (now incorporated as the Ikejiri district of Setagaya-ku, Tokyo). The shrine has a mystical everlasting well on its premises, with its water tap shaped like a mighty dragon.
東京都世田谷區池尻貮丁目に在る池尻稲荷神社は江戸期明曆年間の創建と傳へられてゐる。大山詣りに供せる舊大山街道沿ひに位置せる舊池尻村と舊池澤村の鎭守たる火伏せ稲荷である。境内には「涸れずの井戸」なる靈水が在り其蛇口は强壮なる龍を象ツたと思はるゝ代物也。

Just attended a cool festival held in Atami Japan every autumn to honor the god of the hot springs. Some cool history behind this: the 4th Tokugawa Shogun was so enamored with Atami's hot spring water that he had his strongest vassals carry it to Edo castle (in modern dayTokyo.) It was an all night trek that took 15 hours. Samurai guards escorted them on the trip. The vassals of ensuing Tokugawa generations were a bit luckier: the 8th Shogun (who ruled from 1716-1745) was said to have had 3,640 of these vats carried to Edo over a 9-year period--thankfully not on foot but by boat.
