Our visit Zadar travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (Croatian), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting churches, parks, the old town, quirky neighborhoods, museums, observation points and roman ruins. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Zadar tourism brochure, Zadar itinerary or Zadar, Croatia city tour also known as Zadar, Hrvatska.
10 Things to do in Zadar, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Let's visit Zadar, Croatia together as we cover 10 of the best things to do in Zadar in this travel guide.
Our first stop was Queen Jelena Madijevka Park which has the distinction of being the oldest public park in Croatia. The park looks over the Land Gate which is the main entrance to the Old Town.
During the 16th century, the Venetians helped Zadar withstand the Turkish sieges by building a large water cistern with five wellheads, giving this square its name. These five wells were used to supply the city with water until the year 1838.
Among the ruins of the forum, you might notice there’s one particular Roman column that still stands intact. This one is called the shame post which during the Middle Ages was used to chain and humiliate people who had committed crimes.
The Church of St. Donatus sits in the middle of the Roman Forum and it dates back to the beginning of the 9th century. The church was built in the Byzantine-style in a circular shape - typical of the early medieval construction in Dalmatia. This church has seen many uses from warehouse to museum, but these days it hosts concerts.
Located right next to St. Donatus, the bell tower is actually part of St Anastasija's Cathedral. Climbing this Romanesque bell tower is not for the faint of heart, especially once you reach the spiralling metal staircase on the last floor, but if you make it, you are rewarded with views of the town and the marina.
The meal came to 32 Euros for two mains, two glasses or red wine, and two desserts. The truffle gnocchi was our favourite truffle dish in Croatia.
When it comes to sunset, there are quite a few spots to choose from. We really enjoyed the pier right across from the Roman Forum, however, the Sea Organ is another popular spot. If you do go to the Sea Organ for sunset, you can also check out the Greeting to the Sun, which is another unusual art installation.
This solar-powered work of art lights up in an array of colours once the sun goes down.
Lastly, we leave you with a few scenes of Zadar at night.
We hope you enjoyed this video and we’ll see you in the next one as we continue our travels in Croatia.

Zadar In Your Pocket - Land Gate
The city walls have had several entrances knocked through them at more confident points in Zadar's history. Some of them were walled up for good, but four remain as the vital link between the town within the walls and the sea outside them.
The Venetians built the Land Gate - then the main entrance into the city - on the little Foša harbour in 1543. It's considered one of the finest monuments of the Venetian rule in Dalmatia, and has the form of a triumphal arch with a central passage for wheeled traffic, and two smaller side arches for pedestrians. It's decorated with motifs such as St Chrysogonus (Zadar's main patron saint) on his horse, and the Shield of St Mark (the coat of arms of the Republic of Venice). Previously, the area had been highly defensive, with a surrounding moat.

Zadar, a Historical Center of Dalmatia, Croatia
Zadar is a city in Croatia on the Adriatic Sea. It is the centre of Zadar County and the wider northern Dalmatian region. Zadar is a historical center of Dalmatia as well as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Zadar.
Zadar gained its urban structure in Roman times; during the time of Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus, the town was fortified and the city walls with towers and gates were built. On the western side of the town were the forum, the basilica and the temple, while outside the town were the amphitheatre and cemeteries. The aqueduct which supplied the town with water is partially preserved. Inside the ancient town, a medieval town had developed with a series of churches and monasteries being built.
During the Middle Ages, Zadar fully gained its urban aspect, which has been maintained until today. In the first half of the 16th century, Venice fortified the town with a new system of defensive walls on the side facing land. In the course of the century architectural building in the Renaissance style was continued and defensive trenches were also built. They were completely buried during the Italian occupation until that in 1873, under Austrian rule, the ramparts of Zadar were converted from fortifications into elevated promenades commanding extensive seaward and landward views, thus being the wall lines preserved; of its four old gates one, the Porta Marina, incorporates the relics of a Roman arch, and another, the Porta di Terraferma, was designed in the 16th century. In the bombardments during the Second World War entire blocks were destroyed, but some structures survived.

Zadar In Your Pocket - Bridge Gate
The city walls have had several entrances knocked through them at more confident points in Zadar's history. Some of them were walled up for good, but four remain as the vital link between the town within the walls and the sea outside them.
Near the bridge on the north side is the neo-Renaissance Bridge Gate, knocked through by the Italians only 70 years ago, and leading directly to Narodni trg and the Kalelarga. Further west, by the old Arsenal, is the fourth and smallest gate, named after St Rocco, connecting the Three Wells Square with the harbour area.

ZADAR, CROATIA: Old Town, Beach & Delicious Food | Croatia Vlog
Zadar, Croatia vlog: On day 2 of our Croatia travel vlog series we show you our first full day exploring the Old Town of Zadar, Croatia, covering attractions you can visit such as the sea organ (morske orgulje), greeting to the sun, the beautiful promenade (riva), Kosovare beach (as short walk from old town) and Zadar’s gorgeous town squares. Zadar sunsets are not to be missed, and the one we witnessed on our first day ensured we saw the Zadar sunset every night of our trip! In this vlog we also show you delicious Croatian food for both lunch and dinner - were very impressed by the quality of food in Zadar.
After having spent a few days in the Zadar region of Croatia we highly recommend you consider Zadar for your trip, whether that be a city break, a base to explore the Istrian or North Dalmatian regions of Croatia, or as part of a larger Croatia itinerary. The old town of Zadar is incredibly picturesque, with limestone floors and pastel buildings. Currently this city appears to have hit the sweet spot of tourism: busy enough that there is plenty to do, but not as crowded as the currently more popular hotspots of Dubrovnik and Split. It is also worth noting that Zadar is quickly and easily accessible from Zadar international airport.
Thank you for watching our Zadar, Croatia vlog. We have a few more videos in this Croatia travel vlog series which will cover more of Zadar old town, as well as going on day trips such as Krka National Park (which will feature next in our Croatia travel series).
Croatia Episode 2 Transcript:
Morning! We've just had coffee on our really lovely balcony, and now we're going to go and explore old town [...]
In this episode of our Croatia travel series we spend the first full day exploring the charming, low key old town of Zadar, cooling off in the crystal clear waters of the city beach, and of course trying delicious Croatian food. After arriving in Zadar late the night before we'd already had a glimpse of just how beautiful city was, and we were so excited to spend the day exploring.
Look at the colour of the water! Wow, you can see right to the bottom, it's so clear. I'm gonna swim in you later!
So we're back at the Sea Organ, I'm not sure if you can hear it behind me, warbling away. The sound is caused by the water pushing air through some tubes that are running underneath us
and it's making that...I don't even know how you describe that sound but that's the sea organ! We're gonna have breakfast picnic at the sea organ; we've got these little chocolate pastries.
This here is Greeting to the Sun, which is where we were last night, and can you see now it's just solar panels in a big circle on the floor. You've got Greeting to the Sun here, and the Sea Organ there.
We're gonna go for a walk along the promenade now. The weather is absolutely beautiful and even though it's all the way back there I can still hear the sea organ.
You can see along the coast here there's lots of steps going into the water because you can just go swimming pretty much anywhere off here. They have got a beach somewhere, but you could just go here if you wanted to.
We've reached the end of the promenade and we've come to this small marina full of lots of little boats and lots of little fish!
Time for lunch. When researching recommended places to eat Restaurant Bruschetta cropped up time and time again, so we were eagerly looking forward to trying it for our first lunch in Zadar.
We've got bruschetta, octopus carpaccio, fresh tuna, octopus salad, seafood spread and seabass. [...]
The City Beach is a short walk from Old Town and has amenities such as showers, changing rooms, food and drink. The beach has a blue flag award meaning that safety, cleanliness and water quality are a very high standard. If you have your heart set on a white sand beach then this Pebble Beach might not be what you're looking for. However, what it lacks in sun it makes up for with it's stunning crystal-clear water.
[...]
Since we last picked up the camera we went back to the room, got showered, got changed and now we're going to get back out to explore some more of old town, because there's still quite a lot left that we haven't seen. [...]
This is Five Wells Square. The Venetians help defend the city by building these well heads when they were under siege from the Turks. You can go straight from Five Wells Square here down the steps to another square [...]
From five well square you can access the beautiful Queen Elena Park which was the first public park in Croatia. You've got a nice view of Lands Gate and the marina.
Now we're gonna go and find ourselves a spot for sunset!
Dinner time! We just got seated and we've got such a nice view from our restaurant table! [...]
We weren't able to see all the sights of old town on our first day, however as our trip was based in Zadar we'll be covering more of the city later throughout our trip series, as well as visiting other destinations as day trips from Zadar, Croatia.

ZADAR, CROATIA - travel shorts
Boasting an historic old town of Roman ruins, medieval churches, cosmopolitan cafes and quality museums set on a small peninsula, Zadar is an intriguing city. It’s not too crowded, it’s not overrun with tourists and its two unique attractions – the sound-and-light spectacle of the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation – need to be seen and heard to be believed.
While it’s not a picture-postcard kind of place, the mix of ancient relics, Habsburg elegance, coastal setting and unsightly tower blocks is what gives Zadar so much character. It's no Dubrovnik, but it's not a museum town either – this is a living, vibrant city, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Zadar is also a key transport hub with superb ferry connections to the surrounding islands and to Italy.
Zadar In Your Pocket - Narodni Trg
Two monuments dominate Narodni Trg (People's Square) the City Sentinel (Gradska straža) and the City Lodge (Gradska loža). The City Sentinel designed by a Venetian architect in the late Renaissance style, with a large central clock tower and a surrounding stone barrier and railing with holes for cannons (both later additions). The building once housed the Ethnographic Section of the National Museum, one of the most important collections in the country, and worth seeing for the rich colours of local national costumes, textiles (weaving and lace), jewellery, agricultural, fishing and household objects.
The City Lodge was built by the same architet as the City Sentinel, this building once was the city's courthouse, council chambers and library. With its huge windows and high ceilings, it nowadays serves as a stunning exhibition space, hosting events such as the international photography triennial Man and the Sea and the triennial of contemporary Croatian art The Blue Salon.
