BYRON wreck in Crete

It was St. Anthony's Day, on January 17 1985 at around 11.00 am. The whole Crete was at the mercy of unprecedented bad weather with strong winds, heavy rain floods and cut communications. The ship BYRON I truck which was carrying sugar raided the shallow. The SOS, which was broadcast for unclear reasons, never reached the Heraklion Port Authority. However, the signal caught the business chamber of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and sent a rescue helicopter to the area. While BYRON I was cut the middle, the crew managed to leave the ship and be saved.
