Camp Zama opened its gate to the public for the 60th annual Bon Odori Festival. Despite the hot and humid weather, nearly 20,000 people from both on and off the installation came to the base to experience a vibrant mix of Japanese and American culture.

Camp Zama Bon Dance Festival 2018
U.S. Army Garrison Japan and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force recently co-hosted the 59th Annual Bon-Odori Festival at Camp Zama. Service members, Civilians and local Japanese residents gathered in circles around a large tower to take part in the age-old Bon-Odori dance.

Every year for the last 58 years, Camp Zama has thrown open its gates and welcomed in their Japanese neighbors in celebration of an ancient cultural tradition. This year the weather was hot and steamy; but not even soaring temperatures could derail an event with so much heart.

Camp Zama and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation recently celebrated the opening of its new Warrior Zone, a leisure facility for the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program, or BOSS, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the installation’s Community Recreation Center.

The 55th Camp Zama Bon Dance Festival
Narration:
The gates were open all day to the public, who could enjoy both American and Japanese food and drinks, children's activities, street performances and more.
Visitors could also take photos with a black hawk helicopter and pose with U.S. Army soldiers.
As the evening arrived, many people wearing Yukatas - the summer version of the Kimono- surrounded
the bon tower and began dancing to the music.
Bon is a traditional Japanese festival that takes place every summer during which people pray for the souls of their ancestors.
They offer food to the departed, and the music is said to help heal the souls of the deceased.

Service members, Civilians, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and Japanese residents from local communities gathered in a circle around a large tower and danced to traditional Bon-Dance music during the 57th annual Camp Zama Bon-Odori Festival; co-hosted by the U.S. Army Garrison Japan and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Camp Zama.

Camp Zama Bon Odori Festival 2013
The 54th annual Bon Odori Festival was held August 3rd on Camp Zama. U.S. Army Japan's largest bilateral festival of the year attracted more than 26,000 visitors to the installation. Many of the attendees danced in a circle around a large bon tower to the tune of many traditional Japanese folk songs.

Camp Zama Bon Dance Festival 2015
The festival included traditional U.S. and Japanese food booths, a flea market, live music, street performances and a Mixed Martial Arts match-up by the Japanese MMA association group called “Gra-chan.”
